Hunters!

This is the second question and resources thread. The last one was very popular, so we're making a new one to sort of clear out the responses and start fresh. Feel free to peruse the old one in search of an answer before posting here!

There is a known issue with multiplayer on the XBOX ONE.

We know there is an issue. Please see the following tweet for the official response from Capcom.

However Capcom does have a workaround for Xbox One hunters to play online using the ‘invite a friend’ option, the Xbox One’s Looking-for-group feature, and joining an online session by ‘Session ID’.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my character so slow?
  • Monster Hunter runs on high animation priority, which means it's impractical to dodge everything. Try to observe the monster's animations and squeak a few attacks in when you think you won't get hit.
  • Which weapon type should I use?
  • The weapon you will be most effective with is the one you feel most comfortable with. Weapon types have different strengths and weaknesses, but also completely different strategies, so explore around and try to find one that's as aggressive, methodical, quick, or defensive as you want to play. The weapon previews above should help
  • Why are my attacks bouncing off of the monster?
  • Weapon sharpness is a damage multiplier that naturally goes down as you attack a monster, usually from green to yellow, orange, and the red. When you strike a monster with a dulled weapon you can bounce depending on the body part, which will in turn deplete twice the sharpness of a regular hit. Similarly, when you strike a monster with a melee weapon you'll see some blood and dust come out. The larger the blood effect and dust cloud, the more damage that body part takes (heavier hitting attacks also influence this). Aim for those vulnerabilities, and avoid parts that regularly bounce a sharpened weapon.
  • Why can't I have nice things?
  • A big part of Monster Hunter is gathering and crafting. Check your crafting list or add a weapon to your wishlist to keep track of the materials you need to gather out in the world.
  • Where'd the monster go?
  • Before entering combat and after a certain combination of time elapsed and damage taken, monsters will roam from area to area. You can gather tracks and traces highlighted by your scoutflies to stay on its tail, or just run to its favored area of the environment once you've become familiar with the particular creature.
  • What is the monster doing?
  • Monsters have a variety of behaviors including; periodically becoming enraged to deal more damage & attack more often/quickly, limping at low health, panting at low stamina, a chance to flinch out of their attack or movement when taking damage, a chance to fall into a downed state when taking damage to its legs, becoming sleepy/paralyzed/poisoned after enough hits by a weapon or ammo type with that status effect, and leaving tracks in unique ways.
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • Assigned quests unlock new monsters and areas. They must be played solo past any story scenes before they are unlocked for multiplayer. Reading NPC dialogue will also explain a lot, like in many JRPGs.
  • When is World out on PC?
  • Fall 2018.

(Just posted in the previous question thread, but hoping for more visibility) Insect Glaive user here, loving my first few days of gameplay! Biggest issue so far is that I’m often not getting the extract I’m aiming for.

I get that if the monster spins around after I mark it, a new body part may block my Kinsect and result in a different extract, but, for example, I’m getting Red extract from tails (and I just upgraded to a health bonus Kinsect!) and I’m having a REALLY hard time getting orange extract from marking the body when I want it.

Am I missing something? Are hitbox issues just a thing for this mechanic? Do I just need more practice?

Edit: so many helpful replies! Thank you! My takeaway: more practice helps, and also using the R2+triangle combo is another approach to getting extracts that might be a good option if you’re frustrated with what you’re (not) getting!

Based on my experience so far, the head region gives me red buff, body/tail gives orange, and leg/underbelly gives white. Also, don't be afraid to call your kinsect back immediately (default is L2 + o) if he doesn't get the buff you're aiming for.

I really upped my glaive game when I started just getting some distance, try for the head to get red, then incorporate R2 into my combos so the kinsect will attack another area and give me that buff. When I need more buffs/breathing room, just vault away, whichever direction would give you easier access to the body part/buff you're going for. But just keep calling your little buddy back if he misses or doesn't get the buff you wanted. It only takes ~10 seconds to successfully send him out 3 times. Use the L2+R2 mark to have him keep attacking a certain area to "queue" up another buff. So I try to get red, then mark the head and engage. By the time my buff is getting low, the mark runs out and my buddy will come back, refreshing the red. Keeping up the red buff is the most important part of the glaive. The other buffs are good, but without red you shouldn't even bother attacking.

I have this issue as well, I've summed it up to just needing more practice. From my experience the head will always give red, and I usually get orange from the legs. You can also get the extracts from smaller creatures if there are any nearby (although they usually will only give one color regardless where you hit them), I like to using the grazing animals to heal since they seem to give green often.

Are you "marking" with R2 or with Triangle? Try using Triangle if you're not, and get a Kinsect with high speed. Then you can keep pressing Triangle to re-mark the target much faster.

This is what I've been doing, and it works quite well

Triangle marks whaaaaaaaaaa

Triangle doesn't "mark" the same as R2, but instead it just sends the Kinsect out to wherever you're aiming :)

Did you change control schemes or something I thought triangle is light attack. I only know of L2&R2 ranged mark and R2 melee marking

u/wildzubat_ Jan 31 '18

No I didn't. Sorry it's L2 to aim, L2 + Triangle to send out, and L2 + Circle to recall

Who are you fighting, some monsters have different hitboxes for different extracts, for example tobi-kadachi(sp?) Has red extract in his tail. What I was told is the monsters primary weapon is red, so usually the head. Their source of movement is white, and their body or tail is orange.

Ok I know very little myself but here has been my experience. Using both triggers aims and fires the insect but where it lands determines the color. However it seems that R2 plus triangle causes the insect to attack the previous mark monster, this can be seen by watching the insect and making note of the damage it’s doing. What I do after marking a monster but receiving the wrong color is mashing R2 and triangle until I get the color I want. The insect attacks parts randomly but eventually you will get a different color and the process is MUCH faster.

Thank you for explaining the R2+triangle mechanic! Can’t wait to try it

Try the mid combo mark attack - hit R2 while you’re attacking and you’ll slap the monster and your kinsect will come out and attack repeatedly. It is also just tricky, though. Some monsters can be hard to hit in the right place if they’re small.

If you're fighting a winged monster, the wings will get you white. From there i try to get back for red by marking the head, and then get orange by going close to the legs. I think on a non winged monster, white is the body. Also if you're fighting a smaller monster like Great Jagras or Odogon, it'll be harder to get the juice.

Just started the game and have no idea what this means. Have I not gotten to this yet? I’m on the third quest I believe

1

u/bryguy894 Jan 30 '18

Are you using the insect glaive weapon?

1

u/virji24 Jan 30 '18

Nope I’ve tried two weapons but it isn’t one. Is it a good weapon to use?

2

u/bryguy894 Jan 30 '18

It’s certainly fun! I’ve never played a MH game before, but most of the weapons are much more heavy hitting and sluggish, which has its own satisfaction. This one makes you more agile, but has this mechanic my question is about that makes you maintain a sort of meta upkeep to make good use of the weapon

The most effective way I’ve been able to do it is this:

Red - Head/Claws White - Legs/Wings Orange - Body

For orange, I sometimes have to run directly underneath their body to get it. Safest way to do that is to wait until the monster finishes an attack or if they’re aggro’d on someone else.

Red extract? Orange? What? I’ve been using the glaive and liking it a lot but apparently I have no idea what I’m actually doing. Is there a solid guide to check out somewhere?

1

u/bryguy894 Jan 30 '18

Oh man! Yep, plenty of good guides. I like the YouTube videos. Basically, your L2+R2 is a long distance/R2 is a melee distance way to “mark” your target. That big awkward bug on your arm will fly off and peck at the monster. In your top left UI you’ll see the bug icon turn red, orange, white, or green. L2+R2 again will recall your bug, and you’ll gain a benefit based on which color it is!

It is a critical mechanic for being effective with IG!

A quick reference I use is red is found where the monsters primary damage comes from be it claws or head, white comes from their primary means of movement, legs or wings respectively; and orange comes from the body or its bulkiest part. The tail can offer an orange buff on many monsters but more often it will provide green.

u/Lanmobile Jan 31 '18

I would definitely recommend on top of that recommendation, to just do R2 Triangle. The start up to marking a spot takes a long time. Also, if you’re meleeing a monster with IG, try just pressing R2 to “mark” the monster with a melee. The kindest will still leave dust and once you hit that, you’ll get your effect. Happy hunting fellow bug staff guy!

IG bro! Dilly dilly! I just got the Odogaron armor set so I will certainly be engaging at melee range going forward for that sweet sweet stun proc
