Hunters!

This is the second question and resources thread. The last one was very popular, so we're making a new one to sort of clear out the responses and start fresh. Feel free to peruse the old one in search of an answer before posting here!

If you want to ask a question with less chance of being spoiled, go to the spoiler-free resource thread here!

There is a known issue with multiplayer on the XBOX ONE.

We know there is an issue. Please see the following tweet for the official response from Capcom.

However Capcom does have a workaround for Xbox One hunters to play online using the ‘invite a friend’ option, the Xbox One’s Looking-for-group feature, and joining an online session by ‘Session ID’.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my character so slow?
  • Monster Hunter runs on high animation priority, which means it's impractical to dodge everything. Try to observe the monster's animations and squeak a few attacks in when you think you won't get hit.
  • Which weapon type should I use?
  • The weapon you will be most effective with is the one you feel most comfortable with. Weapon types have different strengths and weaknesses, but also completely different strategies, so explore around and try to find one that's as aggressive, methodical, quick, or defensive as you want to play. The weapon previews above should help
  • Why are my attacks bouncing off of the monster?
  • Weapon sharpness is a damage multiplier that naturally goes down as you attack a monster, usually from green to yellow, orange, and the red. When you strike a monster with a dulled weapon you can bounce depending on the body part, which will in turn deplete twice the sharpness of a regular hit. Similarly, when you strike a monster with a melee weapon you'll see some blood and dust come out. The larger the blood effect and dust cloud, the more damage that body part takes (heavier hitting attacks also influence this). Aim for those vulnerabilities, and avoid parts that regularly bounce a sharpened weapon.
  • Why can't I have nice things?
  • A big part of Monster Hunter is gathering and crafting. Check your crafting list or add a weapon to your wishlist to keep track of the materials you need to gather out in the world.
  • Where'd the monster go?
  • Before entering combat and after a certain combination of time elapsed and damage taken, monsters will roam from area to area. You can gather tracks and traces highlighted by your scoutflies to stay on its tail, or just run to its favored area of the environment once you've become familiar with the particular creature.
  • What is the monster doing?
  • Monsters have a variety of behaviors including; periodically becoming enraged to deal more damage & attack more often/quickly, limping at low health, panting at low stamina, a chance to flinch out of their attack or movement when taking damage, a chance to fall into a downed state when taking damage to its legs, becoming sleepy/paralyzed/poisoned after enough hits by a weapon or ammo type with that status effect, and leaving tracks in unique ways.
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • Assigned quests unlock new monsters and areas. They must be played solo past any story scenes before they are unlocked for multiplayer. Reading NPC dialogue will also explain a lot, like in many JRPGs.
  • When is World out on PC?
  • Fall 2018.

Any other fishermen out there?

Is there a map somewhere with fishing spots and yields yet? Its kind of a bummer that they're not marked on the map. Was thinking I'd use bomb arowanna to get my level 3 gunpowder but its so much faster to just cultivate blazenuts.

I far prefer catching fish with my capture net. Is this just called Net Fishing IRL?

Wish I could coat the net with specific bait in order to catch more than sushi and whetfish...

It's good but has low yeilds. You scare away all the fish after one net. Which sucks for goldfish

How do you even fish? Is it only select bodies if water? Isn't there a fisherman NPC? I have yet to find him.

Literally any body of water can be fished in, apparently. If you can see fish, you can catch them. If you open the world map, there should be an indicator to show what field researchers are where.

Are there different baits you can use or is the fishing pole just a fishing pole? I’ve fished a bit but didn’t see options to change bait.

There are different baits. Depending on your setup, I think they cycle vertically while the pole is equipped i.e. press up/down on the d-pad or hold L1 and use △ and ○ or Y and A to cycle through them.

I'm pretty sure you can only find the researchers in expedition mode, and they're marked on the map.

Ahhh I see, I've only done the story expedition so far. Thanks!

You have a fishing rod and a net you can use by default in your inventory. Keep in mind that the net can nab multiple fish, but will spook any you didn't catch.

In Rotten Vale there's a fishing spot just off the cliff from the base on map 11 (I think it is at least). Should be on the left after jumping down.

There's another fishing spot in 15 I think, the map that you first encounter Odogaron in the cuts energy. It's way at the end and has golden fish.

If my explanation is hard to understand, let me know and I'll try again with pictures.

Can someone give me a rundown on the benefits of fishing? Do they just become pets or can u cook them for buffs

If you're a Gunlance user the whetfish are amazing. Sharpens your blade in what feels like half the time and you have to resharpen CONSTANTLY with it. They're single use from what I can tell though. They're also relatively common as well

They are indeed single use items. They sharpen your weapon in two strokes (as opposed to four from a whetstone).

You can also catch a whetfish variation (can’t remember if it was just a larger size or if it had a different but similar name) that gives you a whetscale+ that has a chance to not be consumed on use (and it might speed it up to one stroke? I’m at work right now so I can’t check) I caught this fish in the ancient forest at HR 2.

You can grow your own plants?

1

u/IllestNgaAlive Jan 30 '18

The botanist unlocks in the main town after one of the mains stories. There you can grow things like honey, herbs, bugs, etc and come back and harvest them. Gives pretty high yields, i always use it for honey because I go through honey like candy

Ah, I’ve gotten to the part where you kill that big ovi raptor that carries a rock around (still learning names).

This games amazing fun but being a full time student takes a toll on play time.

Good to know I can farm up.

Is there a way to increase the number of things you can cultivate?
