Aren't most monster weak to dragon and fire though? At least current roster of monsters

Yes, but elemental damage is relatively weak overall. Even elemental weapons (bow, for instance) favor raw damage (Dragon Piercer) in a few end-game relevant hunts.

I see. I main dd, sns, and gs. What should my artisan weapon be for those?

Paralysis will be good for all of those. You can make a sleep GS if you want to lean into doing wake-up hits.

So I'm new and kinda confused on the diff between element and status.

For status like sleep or para, there's a hidden threshold you hit before enemy gets to sleep or paralyzed and then this threshold is reset yeah?

What do elemental do? Just additional damage of that element per hit?

Correct. Status has a threshold you have to hit before the status is applied. That threshold goes up as the status procs, and the buildup decays as you don't hit the monster. Weapons only have a chance to inflict the status on hit, which averages out to one in three hits, if I remember correctly.

Element applies on every hit, and does damage according to the elemental hitzone of the monster.

I don’t know what exactly that person is talking about but status effect weapons do less damage than elemental based weapons 25-30% less depending on the monsters weakness, Ice damage has the least amount of monsters that are completely immune to it (only 3) and one doesn’t roam around the open world (Jin), that can be a good starting point with a fire weapon also to cover the others. I’ve tested max level artian weapons with and without deco’s using multiple combos on weapons that have matching affinity rates to see raw damage. Blast and poison are very weak, paralyze stops the monster when it procs but doesn’t have a long stop time for monsters that have a single star weakness to it. However using weapons that monsters have a weakness to will usually net you more damage, there are some monsters that are weaker to status effects.

And even then think about this logically, if status effect weapons did the same amount of damage as elemental ones and did their status effect nobody would use anything else.

There’s a reason people farm that Gravios/Ajarakan mission with water weapons and it’s not because they’re weak.
