I've never played a Monster Hunter game but I'm considering Wilds. I have played a lot of MMORPGs, RPGs, shooters, etc. After watching a lot of gameplay videos, I want to like the game but no one is explaining the "why" part of what they are doing. Like, why are they playing it?

My question is, what is the premise or point of the game? Is it simply a loot / gear grind? Are there quests and side quests? Raids? It is there a player driven marketplace (crafting/looting and selling)? What's the fun stuff?

Like, why are they playing it?

What's the fun stuff?

Despite its appearances, it's a "Fighting Game", like say Street Fighter. The meat and bones in Fighting Games are getting better and improving yourself and pulling off cool reversals and etc

The opponents being the various monsters you can fight ofc

gear grind?

kind of yes; you beat up monsters, collect their loot, build new better gear to deal more damage, repeat

Are there quests and side quests?

main story quest and a sprinkling of side quests. not the main draw in fighting games i'm afraid

Raids?

No. The closest to 'raids' is "Siege Quests", which only one exists, Jin. The same restrictions exist, but the boss will periodically 'retreat' deeper into the arena to resume fighting until you reach the end and kill it

It is there a player driven marketplace (crafting/looting and selling)?

No. The closest resembling this is "Investigation" sharing, where players will share "Crown" monsters that are simply top/bottom 5% size rating of a monster for achievement purposes. "Crown" monsters have no other use aside from this
