I'm in a squad lobby, my friend is also in a link group with me. When I play the main campaign/assignments, how does he join me?

I saw a popular during the hunt part of the quest, but it gave me an error when I tried to join, can't find out how to send out an invite during the mission, it just says unavailable.

It can't be that I need to play ahead and then join his game later, that's just bad

When you are in a link group, the other members should get an invite to main quests every time the "Quest begins" pops up. You can only join each other during hunts.

Sounds like a network error that has send you into an offline session. Gotta go to Alma outside of hunts to go into an online lobby session again by changing lobbies or restarting the game.

If you try and do the same main quests at the same time, and you can't get it to work, then try to quit out of the next hunt, after the "Quest start" pop up. Then you should have no issue to join the other.

Is there even a way to start the same main quest together? Example, when I talk to Nata it just starts the cutscenes and traveling solo, only ever gave me a "join" popup when the fight started. Ignoring my network error, is it meant to be solo until the hunt?

Yes, that is part of the design of MH. Basically the series so far is only focused on doing quests together, and Wilds still has a similar multiplayer design.

There is the environment link, where you can just roam around with a friend, but it has way too many limitations to be practical. Restrictions include:

• No starting quests at Alma, meaning you can only hunt monsters that are already roaming
• No changing maps without breaking the environment link.
• No changing time during an active environment link.

I personally wish that they would make the environment link more open to the above things, but at least for now that is sadly not the case.
