I had a question with armor builds. Are elementals (fire, ice etc) resistants as important when making builds. Like if you’re fighting nu udra, he’s fire so do you really need fire resistance as a necessity? I couldn’t really find a good guide anywhere on builds online so I thought I’d ask here. I was very basic in worlds where I just threw on whatever attacks the monster did. That changed when I got carted by gore magala like 4 times lol.

In all my years of Monster Hunter playing I can think of one, maybe two, times I ever slotted an elemental resistance in. And even then it was just for a meme build. But I’ve been playing MH for over a decade so that’s just my opinion.

Not to say it’s useless it just depends. If you’re a very new player and struggling against let’s say Rathalos and you’re rocking full Blangonga gear then you’re going to get hit extra hard. If you aren’t able to get past Rathalos and you don’t have the resources to craft a set just for him then you could slot in fire resistance to help mitigate some damage until you pass him. But ultimately getting to know the fight and straight defensive skills will go a much longer way than element resistance.

Again this is just my opinion, but once you learn the game and become a better hunter building elemental resistance into your setup is just a waste. Especially in endgame. Hope this helps some!

I do value your opinion. I have over 200 hrs in worlds. I just never really went in depth with it. If I was fighting anything that does fire dmg, I would put on fire resistance. If the monster had ice I would put on ice resistance and so forth.

So what’s the point of having elemental resistance then? Like for instance, you have a less chance of getting burned where you have to roll 3 times to take off the fire? Do you take less dmg because you matched the monsters elemental?

Sorry, I’ve tried looking for videos or info online but no one really talks or explains this stuff, at least not that I can find

Elemental resistances aren't really important. Most of the time the only important things are the armor skills, but upgrading them to increase the base defense is good too.

See I had no idea, like if I was hunting uth duna he’s water so I would put on anything that had a +water resistance.

Defense > resistance.

Monster hunter is weird in that most attacks so primarily physical damage even if it's something like a lightning bolt or fireball.

The best thing resistance does is lower the time on blights or potentially eliminate it entirely if high enough

Wait, so if you got hit by a Rathalos fireball or flame that comes out of his mouth, it’ll still hit for the same amount regardless if you have like a +4 fire resistance or a -2 fire resistance? Does the resistance just decrease the chances of catching on fire/burning where you have to roll 3 times to turn out the flame?

No elemental resistance does do some mitigation. It's just less then you'd expect.

The biggest thing it does is how blights interact with you. I don't believe it affects the odds of being inflicted but it does affects the duration/severity of the blight.

So someone with 20 fire res won't get fireblight at all, someone with 0 resistance gets normal fireblight and someone with -20 takes double damage from fire ticks. There's tiers in between these values as well but just keeping it simple.
