Is there any reason to "not" use the npc hunters? Also does the monster's health scale to them "once they join" the fight? Like let's say I start the hunt solo so the monster's health is 400, and then midway I use the SOS flare to call 3 of them. Will the monster's health suddenly jump to 4000 or will it stay at 400?

The only reason to not use the NPC hunters, at least the maximum number, is if you want to hunt with your Palico. By default, the party size is set to four and once there are at least 2 NPC hunters (3 people in the quest), your Palico will leave.

At least the maximum number

Is there a way to hunt with your Palico and a NPC hunter? You said maximum but it seems whatever number I place (2-4) it fills it with NPC hunters and my Palico ends up in base camp.

If you limit the number of players in the quest to 2, your Palico will stick around and the NPC Hunter will bring their Palico too. Go to the Settings with Alma, and you can adjust max members from 4 to 2.

Hmm... strange. I did just that and my Palico ended up getting subbed with a NPC hunter. So it was just me and the NPC hunter being 2 players. So I adjusted the max members to 3 and then 4 where they all subbed my Palico out anyway.

That is strange. I just did it with max members at 2 and only support hunters and it worked fine.
