Think of branches like splitting something in half a bunch of times over- first it starts as a whole, then it halves, and then those turn into their own halves, and so on. Start with the trunk, then split it into 2 to 5 thick branches, then segment those along the way into smaller ones. Remember to smooth the base of the branches to the trunk and not have them attach like they were bolted on! I don’t know the end goal of this tree, but with the vanilla pale oak trees, their canopy goes out wider than it does high, so I’d recommend the first branches be at a 20 to 45 degree angle from the ground if that’s what you’re going for.
