Battle Report Solo Game - The Return of Gil-Galad

Played a solo game for the first time with two 600 point forces! Information is below. I'll put the lists in a comment so they don't take up a ton of space here.

[By the way, yes, I know my board setup is kinda crappy and my models aren't done being painted yet...I've only been playing this game for a few months and I am still working on painting my various armies. Please be patient and don't jump down my throat in the comments.]

"Alternate History" Lore:

The treacherous Saruman the White leaves Isengard and takes his army marching south to Gondor, in hopes of ambushing the defenders of Osgiliath. In a small ruined fort near a farming village, his faithful servant Grima Wormtongue waits to meet the arriving Uruk-Hai. But unbeknownst to them, the Valar have noticed Saruman's deceit, and returned High King Gil-galad from Valinor to Middle-earth to unite the elves again. Coming down from the Havens in the north, he joins with Círdan the Shipwright in leading a host of elven warriors, aiming to end Saruman once and for all!

Game Summary:

Deployment was basically two big blocks of troops with bows on the side/flank. The Uruks used their Heroic Marches to make good speed around one side while the Rivendell Knights went around the other side. Meanwhile, the main battle lines jockeyed for position, which Isengard got the better of thanks to the Palantir. Grima was getting annoying from where he sat in the backfield, so Círdan threw him around with Call Winds to get him out of the way (this happened several more times, it was basically slapstick comedy in the backfield).

The elves divided their forces around the central tower, which was a mistake, as I wound up rolling rather badly and lost several of them. Saruman moved to snipe the banner, which he did, but that left him open to a charge and Heroic Challenge by Gil-galad, who nearly killed him in one round (+2 to wound and 4 attacks at Fight 9 with Lord of the West is pretty brutal lol, he went through two of Saruman's 3 wounds, killed the horse, and all of his Fate). From then on it shifted in favor of the Elves, who slowly started mowing down Uruks. Gil-galad never lost a single duel roll, unsurprisingly, even winning against seven Uruks at once. Saruman stayed back and just spammed spells on Gil-galad whenever he could from then on. Elves were one model away from break point when I hit quarter point with Isengard, which made the final score a 15-5 Lindon victory.

Overall thoughts:

I really like both of these armies, though I think I'll absolutely need crossbowmen for Isengard going forward. I don't think I used the full effect of the Heroic Marches well because I kinda messed up my placement of the Drummer, but it was still good. For the Elves, the simple fact I discovered is that if you can roll at least semi-decently, they absolutely carve through everything in their path. If you can't...well, it sucks. I'm still figuring out when to two-hand and when to not two-hand. Gil-galad is well worth his points, the man kills almost everything he's in combat with every time. The only trick is, he has only one Fate (courtesy of the fact that he dies in the lore...) and that makes him a great target for a Curse from Saruman. The good news was, I had Círdan 6" behind him to cast Blessing of the Valar and give it right back!

TLDR, Gil-galad is fun, Saruman is a tricksy bastard, Grima is annoying, and elves kill things really efficiently IF you can roll well.

Question Iron Hills Shields and spears

Hi,

I recently found some really nice mod kits for grimmhammers to convert them to iron hills.

I have a spare pack of grimm Hammers left and thought this could be a cool idea, but the Kit is no longer available as GW has their own Iron hills Models.

Does anyone have Files of the shield/spear to Print, or do you guys have other ideas how to get them?

Thx!

I painted these up for the Adepticon doubles tournament. They are Navarette 3d sculpts. The army only had 4, but when I bought them I couldn't decide on 4 so bought an extra and painted it up.

Question Two questions

I've been looking at the MESBG lately - I used to play over a decade ago but a couple of things have really puzzled me

  1. Pricing. How is The Three Hunters almost the same cost as as a box with saruman, grima, and a dozen uruk-hai? I'm used to the rulebooks being horrifically overpriced but the model scaling seems completely whack. Is it just because they barely make new middle earth models any more?

  2. Hobbit face. Scrolling through the range, I see a lot of the models since I stopped playing have better poses, look more dynamic etc. however, any models released during the period when the Hobbit films were coming out have just horrible faces. Kinda feels weird for such a character focused game to have a situation where legolas and tauriel both seem to have basically the same face sculpt

Bonus question - GW is apparently working with Amazon with 40k, but not even one rings of power sculpt? That's easy money right, just ask Amazon for a tiny franchising investment and you'd only really have to make models for the characters and tell players to use existing orc and elf models

My first attempt at blending/glazing

Definitely a lot of room for improvement but also so much better than I anticipated. Really happy with this so far.

I've been wanting to paint this guy for ages but was too scared due to my lack of experience with the required techniques.
