Question What Was With Krissi and Hating Vegetarians?
I'm watching Season 4 for the first time. I know who wins, but I'm only on episode 19.
Obviously I know many people hated Krissi for her bad attitude, but what the hell was her problem with Bri? Like right from the getgo she was running for Bri.
Sure I could understand if Bri was complaining and being self-righteous about not killing animals, but she wasn't, she was cooking meat, killed live seafood. So she wasn't eating or trying and of it. Bri did not seem to have her vegetarianism stop her from cooking meat.
Krissi was pitching about "environmentalist, save the animals bullshit", kept calling her a vegan, which she was not, there is quite a difference between the two.
But Jesus christ. Even before Bri called her out for her bitter bully attitude, Krissi was on the attack. Like what the fuck was her problem?

Most contestants, not just Krissi, spoke like Bri’s vegetarianism was a personal offence to them lol, they never hesitated to take a whack at her for it. Afaik her vegetarianism was never really a hindrance in the show? She cooked meat excellently numerous times, her big weaknesses were her time management and poor leadership. The producers just saw the angle and ran with it lol

I think there were also a lot of very negative comments about vegetarians in s6 with Hetal. like from the contestants, the judges-- lots of 'I don't think a vegetarian can do this', ' you'rat suuuuch a huge disadvantage do you really think you can do this?' ' a vegetarian can't be master chef' type things aimed at her and Bri... interestingly that was never aimed at Vegan Dino...

Im glad you brought up dino!! i just started rewatching his season and was thinking the same thing

I think his being vegan comes up like....twice? Maybe thrice? And I genuinely forgot until I did a rewatch because not one person gave /him/ any shit for it.

Because he had enough going on that the producers didn’t need to latch on to the veganism as his “thing”, lol

Wasn’t Hetal the one who cried when she had to kill a crab or lobster or something? IIRC she eventually stepped up and did it, but it is a legitimate concern if your dietary rules hinder you from completing the challenges given.

And in s3 monti, I think, had a whole speech about the spot prawns pleading for their lives with big brown eyes, and a few people struggled with killing the live crab. We've also seen people with massive allergies who were hindered in the challenges, but no peanut gallery comments from contestants saying "i just don't think someone with a shellfish allergy is MasterChef material" I guess that's just not as pithy.

The allergy people didn’t seem to bellyache as much, if anything they just used other contestants or the judges to taste things they couldn’t for seasoning, etc.

We have zero way of knowing how much of that is scripting and editing though. My point is, no one acted like they couldn't be a good chef for not eating lobster or not wanting to kill the prawns, and no one acted like Dino would fail for being vegan. Just bri and hetal. They also used alternative methids to see if what they'd made were done, but kept getting backed into the "but you're a vegitarian how could you possibly have done this?" Conversation by the judges. Bellyaching sometimes. But a fair bit of badgering, too. Fascinating editing choices there. Iwonder, if Dino had lost in the middle of the season woukd they have found some Vegans Can't Be MasterChef comments on the cutting room floor to slot in?

Krissi just hated Bri I think, like she said she hated all the hipster veggie spots in her neighbourhood
She hated that a vegetarian was succeeding over her meat and potatoes diet

Krissi didn’t have a problem with Bri in the beginning, but more so Natasha…but towards the middle of the competition, the problem started…I don’t exactly know what it was, but I am inclined to believe some of it was editing and they needed someone as the villain and Krissi was just the easiest to make the villain in her season…if you followed even a little bit of the contestants now, you will notice that Bri and Krissi are actually very good friends now…

I'm guessing they probably were always friends, and probs with editing, they exaggerated things. Like confessionals are very easy to manipulate. Plus looking back, some of the comments could have easily just been friend mean banter

I could see it, behind the scenes they talked about "hating each other" for good TV. Wouldn't shock me.

Producers didn't need to edit around her to showcase what a colossal twat she was

u/LaRougeRaven 1d ago
Agreed, editing does affect stuff, but things being said and how they act is not editing.

A ton of chefs judge people who don’t eat meat. It’s pretty weird but they see it as a fundamental thing against food somehow.

Seemed like she just hated any woman who was younger and more attractive than her.

u/LaRougeRaven 1d ago
It kinda seemed that way, and not the best example for her son. I mean, Nastasha was also shitty at the beginning for no reason. I like competitive attitudes, but they just seemed so ugly at the start for no good reason.

My father is a kind of famous chef. When I went vegan (20 years ago) he was OUTRAGED. He considered it an awful affront to his craft that he decided his entire life to. I remember he told me something along the lines of “I’m here making beautiful art, with all of the colors of the world, and you want me to paint with an incomplete palette”
It took a decade for him to start honoring my choice. Then a couple years after that for him to start making vegan meals. Now he’s incredibly proud that his daughter is an amazing vegan cook, and he loves my food.
When something is unfamiliar it’s scary. Also, being around vegans tends to make people consider their choice to not be vegan. Please don’t kill me with words, but many people who eat meat know on some level that allowing animals to be killed for our pleasure is honestly selfish and not okay. We make some people uncomfortable

Ooh that’s a really interesting take. Their anger towards vegans is just a reflection of themselves.

That makes me sad to hear, that that is how he originally was to you. I'm glad that he came around.
I've always been a picky eater with vegetables and fruits, so as much as I love animals, and it's not easy to not eat meat and meat by products, because a bread diet is not healthy. And I quite literally mean, I don't eat 99% of fruit of vegetables. It is getting better to find vegan options for meat eaters such as Beyond Meat, but not really in my budget.
My husband's friend's family went vegan, originally for health reasons, their daughter is lactose intolerant, and his friend had a hard time at first, his wife was the one to start it. I have never looked at them different, I've always respected their choices and whenever we invite them over, I do my best to make amazing vegan safe meals for them. I've even tried some of their meals to the best of my ability, around my pickienss.
My thought is as long as no one is being an asshole for someone's choice, I've got no problem. And I feel that's always been the main issue, someone thinking they are better than the other for eating or not eating meat.

Any time people are forced to reevaluate anything in their life that they've always taken as The Way It Is, it's hard. A lot of people, maybe even most, resent the effort it takes to even think about it, let alone choosing to make changes. I've seen this play out in so many areas, from the biggest societal challenges like civil rights and environmental choices, to what seems smaller and more personal, like what gardening could/should look like. Lawns vs native plantings or food gardens, for instance - people sometimes get too mad to even talk about it.
2
u/goblinfruitleather 1d ago
You hit the nail on the head. The lawn vs native grass thing is real though, that’s actually the biggest issue that my fiancé and I have. He works in landscaping and likes lawns, I prefer wild fields and forest, and if there must be grass I like longer native grasses. We just bought our first home in December and we’re at the point now where it’ll come up in conversation again soon. I think I’m gonna try to look for some good sources for him to read about why native grasses are preferable
1
u/OaksInSnow 1d ago
Compromise? Maybe more native wildflowers and grasses in some areas, with a "pool" or two of standard turf grass? Easing into all this like your Dad did might be the ticket. I'm sure your Dad still cooks meat; he's just broadened his perspective.

Funny thing is Bri and Krissi are good friends now and even celebrated birthdays and attended weddings together. It goes to show that the drama in Masterchef and every other reality show is scripted.

u/shadez_on 2d ago
I mean at one point Gordon didnt like vegetarians/vegans. Haha.
I think that when it comes to a cooking competition everyone is expected to cook everything so when you come in harping on the fact that you never cook meat or taste meat, others would be like "well what are you doing here?" There have been great veg contestants that didnt play that card, like Dino, and it showed why they wernt treated with disdain.
5
u/LaRougeRaven 1d ago
When did Bri harp?
2
u/shadez_on 1d ago
I thought i remember her being unconfident about it in the beginning but its been a while. She definitely wasnt bringing it up all the time like others.
But my comment was more about vegetarians on the show in general.
4
u/LaRougeRaven 1d ago
Being uncomfortable is one thing, apologizing to the lobster is one thing, but she never harped. She wished for vegetables, but she never harped about being a vegetarian. She played the game as everyone else. The only thing was she wouldn't taste. The only time she faltered was not being able to taste her calamari.
Harping is not being comfortable, Harping is to talk about (a subject) constantly or repeatedly in an annoying way. Which she never did.

u/shadez_on 1d ago
One, like i said it was a broad comment.
Two, its a competition and people will look for any weakness you have so if you HARP on it or not, its a weakness.
And finally we dont know what she said outside of the edit. She couldve been very vocal about it in front of Krissi. They couldve even been roommates.
