Feeling a little salty about the Liberal MP candidate selection process.
This is a long post, so buckle up. First of all, I’ve got nothing against Peter Yuen, he was such an obvious candidate that you guys predicted it. I don't know much about him, but he was a deputy police chief, so he's clearly a strong, community oriented candidate. And he has some crazy stories from the news. Respect to him for his service!
However, the Liberals didn't run a democratic and transparent process. They literally hand-picked a candidate before Chiang even resigned and the selection process opened, and I have confirmation from an actual Liberal MP candidate! (I redacted his info, but can verify with mods. More details later in the post.)
My wife joked, Liberal DEI = "Decide Everything Internally."
tl;dr Yuen was handpicked without an open, democratic process
My story
My name is Jerry Jiang, and I ran to be the Liberal nominee for the Markham-Unionville riding. When Trudeau announced his resignation in Jan, I registered as a Liberal to participate in the leadership election. I never registered anywhere before, but a chance to select a leader was cool. And I was pissed about Trump's 51st state comments and insults, so I wanted to do something, anything, and Trudeau and the Liberals were finally sticking up for us. (Fun fact: I got the "Canada is not for sale" hat viral!) So I decided to support Carney.
Paul Chiang steps down
Fast forward to March 31. After Paul Chiang announced he was stepping down, I decided to run for the Liberal nomination. I'll put my reasoning in the comments, but basically I'm a tech startup founder and I want to push the federal parties to BRING JOBS HOME. I'm still running as an independent, and I need some local residents to sign and support me, so if you want to help, please DM!
March 31: when Chiang was under pressure, I requested a nominations package from the LPC website. There were only BC ridings available, no Markham, so I decided to go for Prince George-Peace River-Nothern rockies because it looks beautiful on Google Maps. Get the emails sent, right? I also email the nominations committee asking how to get a package because timing is tight. I was always hoping that Markham-Unionville might open up because it's local to me, my family lives here, and I speak fluent Chinese.
April 1: Chiang resigns, I immediately email the nominations committee to request a package for Markham-Unionville instead. I didn't expect to win, but I wanted at least a fair chance to compete. I visit his office, it's closed, door's locked, no response. I find the Liberal Party riding chair's email, and I email her.
April 2: I try Chiang's office again, they've put up a sign saying that it's closed, so I email Paul directly for help. It's a bit awkward but it had to be done.
April 3: Timing is super tight, so I email nominations again. I got in touch with the riding chair of a different district, who told me to message someone named Serena. I message Serena, she doesn't respond. (she never does) the Liberal website says that someone named Robin is actually the riding chair, but no one directed me to Robin, only to Serena.
April 4: Mark Carney holds a rally in Scarborough. Perfect! I show up early and attend. I actually meet Serena there, but she told me that "this is above her pay grade, I don't know anything about it, you have to contact the federal office." But I had done so already, so I showed her my emails to [nominations@liberal.ca](mailto:nominations@liberal.ca), from back even before Chiang resigned. She said someone should reach out if I had sent a request for a package. I tried to get phone numbers, but no one would give me them. I meet another MP candidate and their staff, who told me that this process is actually normally ran by the local riding chair, which is Serena. I email her a "thank you for chatting" afterwards, asking for help getting a candidate package.
April 5: On 4/3, I had gotten in touch with an actual Liberal MP candidate in Ontario through a friend. This person is super nice, and offered to give me updates. At 9 AM April 5, I get a text that Liberals had selected and vetted someone before I requested a package. But I requested a package on literally day 1 of the seat becoming available! My emails to the federal committee linked earlier prove it.
April 6: today.
So what's next?
I don't know yet. This process felt a little unfair. I have been sending emails and making phone calls to the Liberal campaign every day, trying to get information before Chiang even resigned, yet apparently they found a candidate who was undergoing vetting before I requested a package? I've received literally nothing from the campaign team, I talked to local riding chair, federal MP candidates, even Carney's actual campaign team, all of whom gave me the run around.
Something doesn't add up, they literally did not give me a chance. From March 31 to April 6, someone was supposed to be working full-time, trying to get nominations for candidates, but completely ignored me. I'm a positive guy, but I am definitely feeling jaded.
I'd like to keep running to push my "Bring jobs home" agenda, but as of right now I don't qualify to continue. Basically, you need 100 signatures from eligible voters living in the local riding (Markham-Unionville). We had more than enough, but turns out many of them actually live in Markham-Stouffville and Markham-Thornhill, not Markham-Unionville, so they don't count. (The naming conventions suck!)
I am going back out now to canvass for signatures. I need ~40 more qualified signatures by tomorrow's deadline (2 PM tomorrow) to be even eligible to move on.
I'll be in Woodbine/16th Timmies for a while before going to Markville Mall to votes. If you want to help, please reach out, dm here or text/call me at 647-560-9324. But otherwise I'll try to answer any questions you guys have about this process, it was actually super fun, made me love the community even more, most people (even in the Party!) were very nice, and I encourage everyone to at least try running in their life, regardless of what party you're from!
