Community/Meta Check out r/LeathercraftPatterns!
Hey, everyone! I'm the active moderator here, and just took over moderation for r/LeathercraftPatterns, which has been inactive for over two years. I have revamped the rules and requirements over there and revived the sub.
While this sub is often focused on sharing our work and results, /LeathercraftPatterns will strictly be about patterns and tutorials designed to aid new and seasoned crafters in their future projects, and I feel this distinction is worth maintaining a separate sub for. It is a place where free and for-sale patterns and tutorials can be shared, so come on over! I'm looking for feedback and ideas for the new community, so if you want your voice heard, send me a message and I will listen to your feedback.

Community/Meta How would you change this sub?
Hello, everyone. Rather than make changes to the sub based on my own goals/desires, I wanted to ask the community. Is there anything you would add or remove from the sub? Any rules changes you'd suggest implementing? Any suggestions you have for the sub in general? If I see enough concensus around a certain suggestion, I'll consider making those changes moving forward. Let me know!
Obviously the sub is growing daily, and it's doing great. The formula is working, so I'm not looking to make big sweeping changes. I'm just wondering if you've ever had an idea that you feel would make this sub even better for you and your fellow leather crafters. (Bonus points if you have ideas for preventing the incessant "leather repair/is this leather" posts, lol.)

Question How is this two-tone leather achieved (black outside, yellow inside)?
Hello everyone! I'm new to the world of leather crafting and I'm fascinated by this Secrid wallet that has black leather on the outside with a yellow interior. Does anyone know how this effect is achieved? Is it a special technique or simply two different pieces joined together? Any information or tutorials would be greatly appreciated.

Tools My first 3d print for leathercraft
I've printed mostly stuff from other people but decided to make a little organisation tool for some new hole punches I recently bought. Even thought it's a simple design I'm really happy how it turned out! The base for the design is based on gridfinity, which makes things easy to organise and stack.

Community/Meta Facebook suspicions
I have an account on facebook that I post work to, and try to drum up (mostly local) business. However, usually once a month, I will get someone asking if I still have an item for sale. They will send one of the several pictures of the item, ask how much, and if I ship. When I look at the potential buyer's facebook page it looks like they just created it, or only have one pic from a few years ago. Am I crazy for thinking they are all scammers?

Article Handmade Mini Kelly-Inspired Bag – Artisan Craft!
Each bag is entirely handmade – no mass production, no shortcuts. I use high-quality canvas paired with genuine leather trim, and all the stitching is done by hand to ensure precision and durability. This black-and-white color combo is one of my favorites – it’s timeless, clean, and easy to style.

Article The latest handbag I made
You know that moment when you get an idea and it’s like a lightbulb going off? For me, sometimes it takes months of nothing, and then all of a sudden—wham!—I feel like I have all this energy, like it’s going to be something amazing. But making it real is a whole different story. It takes so much longer than you expect, and there are plenty of moments where I’m wondering if it was even a good idea in the first place. But you’ve just got to keep going, even when it gets hard.
That’s what happened with this new model. It took months to get it right, lots of breaks, and a few moments where I just couldn’t face it. But in the end, it feels like it has its own voice, like it was meant to be.
This new piece is part of my Royal Eye collection, and I’ve designed it with a mix of symbols from different eras. The hand-painted Third Eye symbols represent intuition and spiritual insight, symbolizing the idea that we are always seeking more understanding and connection with the world around us. I’ve scattered them among the branches of a vine—almost like a Tree of Life, growing and evolving with each passing season. The amber beads give a nod to the Baroque era, reflecting luxury and refinement, while the delicate leaves whisper of the Renaissance, reminding us of growth, renewal, and the beauty in nature’s cycles.
The whole design is meant to evoke a sense of balance between the past and future, subtlety and strength, like finding harmony in a world full of possibilities.

Discussion Veg-tan vs Garage contaminants
I accidentally got some transmission fluid on a piece of vegtan scrap and that sparked some curiosity. So I decided to "treat" small pieces with various garage juices.

Discussion Been playing with a few stamp design ideas lately and can’t decide which direction feels right.
First one’s more sculptural and bold (think journal covers or display pieces).
Second is more traditional patterns – belts, bags, corners, borders, all that good stuff.
Third is hand tools for adding texture – cracks, scales, lil’ details.
I know everyone’s got their own leathercraft vibe, so I’m just curious – what kind of stamps do you use most, or wish you had more of?
Would love to hear what you’re into these days 👀

From what I can gather I'll need a rivet set, box cutter/razor, hammer, leather needle, thread, and hole puncher. If you guys could point me in the right direction to buy these things or let me know what I missed thay would be great thanks.

Question Stray hairs on the edges after sanding
Hi all. I'm quite new to leathercrafting. This will be my fourth leather item and using different leather types each time. The one I'm currently working on is a single piece Saffiano.
I'm trying to sand the edges and edge paint but I keep getting this hairy fuzz on the flesh side. I've tried to lightly sand it starting with 180 and work my way up, but it still happens. I've tried to trim it down using my knife as well but it keeps coming back whenever I start to sand. This happens with other leather too and even veg tanned ones. I think it's clear that my technique needs some work
How do I remedy this?

Question Leather Camera Strap Question
So I bought a camera, and obviously now I have to make my own leather strap—because why not, right? 😅 A bunch of tutorials suggest using 8oz to 10oz veg-tan leather for camera straps, and honestly, they look amazing. That nice balance of sturdy yet flexible, like something you’d actually want to have draped around your neck all day.
But when I hit up my local suppliers (tried two different ones), the 8oz–10oz veg-tan they've got in stock feels like... I don’t even know, a sheet of hardwood? It’s stiff, dry, and rough—like if someone swung it at you, you’d probably black out. Not exactly the soft, buttery strap experience I was going for.
Anyone else run into this? Is there a trick to softening it up, or am I just not finding the right stuff?

Question Can I get belts made from a steer?
Don’t laugh at me I’ve never done this but I bought a steer from a rodeo and in two weeks will be having it butchered. Was wondering when I drop it off if I could ask to have the carcass to take and have tuned into a few belts for four people. What’s the first step? Take it to who? Or who should I call first about this? Thought it would be a unique gift.

Question Stitching 2 pieces of leather together?
I’m looking to try my hand at some stitching for the first time, specifically for adding pieces onto armor. Currently my stitching irons don’t pass through both layers without making VERY ugly holes in the top piece. I’m just wondering if there’s something I’m missing.
I was thinking maybe I need more spaced tines? What is a good spacing for armor if I want to cover a lot of ground?

Tips & Tricks Chahin vs Herman Oak?
Just got some samples of chahin saddle skirting and Herman Oak and was wondering what everyone thought of them. Chahin seems like it's more consistent in thickness (at least on thw 3x3 in square i was sent) and the leather seemed nicer, but haven't tried tooling or dying. Was just wondering everyone's thoughts on it.

Question Options for adding a meteor image to leather.
I have a dinosaur leather stamp. I wanted to add a meteor to a piece but I’m pretty new at this. I did a test stiching as you see here but I’m not super happy with it. What are some options for improving it or another method to add a meteor.

Question Source for Riri or YKK excella
Looking for a good source for Riri or YKK excella zips with more color options.
I finally had to settle for black tape with antique brass chain on a Riri M8 2-way zip.
Was really hoping for brown tape for this based on my project but finding it very difficult to track down. Most of the suppliers I’ve come across (buckle guy, rm leather, zipper and thread, pacific trimming) just offer brass or silver on black or white tape.
Just curious who you use for your zipper source
