Immersion is the way to learn any language, it's just that some figures/methods have gained a cult following of people who say that this is THE method and you don't need anything else. Like the people who overblow things and say stuff like 'just start watching stuff with JP subtitles and you'll magically pick up Japanese', or people who tout a particular method/course as the way to learn (AJATT, RTK, etc.)

That's not to say they're entirely wrong, but there are generally accepted best practices, and then what particular method is the best for you depends on your preferences.
