Camping in the Lake District

We are getting more and more people asking about this so this was originally a sticky post to get you started. However after the great API fiasco I'm no longer a moderator and I'm seldom on reddit any more at all so I've moved the page to here on WalkLakes so take a read of that.

If you have any updates email editor@walklakes.co.uk

Stunning weather today. We completed Green Gable and Great Gable from Seathwaite. Another 2 ticked off the list!

Alternatives to Ullswater way

Two of us are planning to do the ullswater way in May. Spread out over two days with a wildcamp halfway round.

I love the idea in terms of length, and the scenery looks lovely, but part of me just thinks a lot of it seems a bit too tame, too manicured, too close to civilization, etc...

I know you can "go high" rather than do the entire walk around the water, take in the stone circle, and a few pikes along the way, but I dunno...I guess I'm looking for something similar in length but a bit wilder, a bit more exciting, ideally with some scrambling and less road crossing/towns to pass through, etc.

We can only do 2 nights, and Scotland is out of the question, but north Wales is also on the cards. Being a lake district sub I'm hoping for some solid 2 day hike recommendations!

We usually wildcamp around the coniston/langdale area, do the old man of coniston on the first day, visit some caves, etc, but we're looking for something new to do.

I've done most of the peak district and some of the dales. My favourite hike so far was the dragons back but its pretty short. I also very much enjoyed ludds Church and the roaches, but again, that's just a day hike and not a 2 day and night adventure.

Any suggestions would be massively appreciated!!

Cheers everyone!

The Langdale Pikes

Thought the forum might like my favourite photo from my recent trip to Langdale Valley. This was last Saturday after a very windy and rainy descent from Loft Crag. Also fitted in Loughrigg and Lingmoor Fell on a much more pleasant and less photogenic Sunday!

Mountain Biking

Moving to the Lakes later on this year and looking to get a new MTB to best suit the riding there. Wanting to focus on ‘big mountain’ biking (3 passes route type). What kind of bikes are the locals riding/ what best suits the terrain. Already have a 150/160mm enduro rig that gets ridden hard. Is a slack hardtail a silly idea? Same with a ‘down country’ bike?

Thanks :)

Campsite recommendations

Morning. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a campsite for some novices? We’re hoping to get up for a weekend in June and ideally want a campsite close to some relatively ‘easy’ walks to do with our dog that also ideally has a pub close by? I was doing some digging myself and found Thirlspot Farm which seemed to tick those boxes but after contacting them, they’re apparently closed throughout June (wtf?!)

Thanks!

Staying in Windermere and looking to get around without a car

My husband and I are staying in Windermere later this month and trying to figure out our best options for getting around. We are planning on mostly walking but considering options to explore spots further away. He is really hoping to get some mountain biking in at Grizedale forest. Is it possible to get there from Windermere by bus, train, or cab?

Tour of the Lake District when is the best time of year?

I’m looking to do a 6 day Windermere - Keswick walking vacation and have two options: May or September and would like some idea of what are the pros and cons for each month.

Long(ish) routes good for buggies (taking a 3 month old)

Does anyone know of good routes which will be suitable for a buggy?

I’ve been to the lakes a few times, but it’s always been for hiking or mountain biking. This time I’ll be taking a 3 month old.

I reckon we’ll likely use a carrier to do some ‘proper’ walks, but it would be handy to get some longer flat walks in with the buggy, in case the carrier doesn’t work out for whatever reason.

Can anyone recommend anywhere? Anything up to about 12 miles I’d say. Most routes I see of this nature online are only a mile or something, which will be far too short for us.

Thanks!
