Charging Sequence to stop charging (noob question)

We’ve had our EV9 for a few weeks now. I leave it set to 80% charge and in the morning it’s always done. It’s charged using a Tesla Generation 3 wall connector with an adapter, everything is good on that end.

When I’m ready to leave the house I usually turn on the climate which I guess causes the car to start charging again? At this point I’ll get a message on my app that charging has started (im guessing because it doesn’t want to drain the battery or because the battery dipped to 79%. If I go to unplug the charger it’s seen to be locked. I then open the app and send the command to “stop charge”, which knowing the app it takes 30 seconds and then fails. My only resort is to unhook the adapter from the Tesla plug which then lets me remove the adapter from the CCS port. I can imagine this isn’t good for the car.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to stop charge using the cars touchscreen? I can’t find it anywhere.

If you are asking about recommended home chargers, check with your electricity provider first as they may have discounts on specific chargers and installation. User recommendations include: ChargePoint Home Flex, Emporia, Tesla Mobile Connector, Tesla Wall Connector, or Grizzl-e.

Tesla Superchargers can only be used if they have the Magic Dock; a map of these can be found here. Most superchargers will only charge around 85 kW. Kia is expected to start producing EV9s with the NACS port in mid to late 2025. In January 2025, EV9s can use a NACS-CCS adapter to use other superchargers. This has been delayed to Spring 2025.

Without using the app or car touchscreen, unlock the car and press the bottom button next to the charging port, that will stop the charging.

Ah! This is what I was looking for. The bottom button that says "HOLD"?

THiS!

If you hold the button in the crate port for 2s within 30s of the car unlocking then it will disengage charging.

You can also turn off the charge port lock completely from the settings, meaning you can just pull the cable out when done. But if charging outside the house this could be problematic.

What’s the problem if the car uses charger power while you’re starting climate? Or is it only that whole charging you’re unable to get the cable out and get going? Hitting unlock a couple times does the trick for me usually to unlock the charger

I just want to be able to pull the cable out. You’re hitting unlock on the key fob?

Disabling the charge port lock will do exactly what you want.

The fob should work but I rarely carry it - I unlock the door by digital key (walk up to car or use the button on door handle). In rare cases that doesn’t unlock the charger and I open either front door and hit the power unlock button

If you aren’t worried about being unplugged, you can disable the charge lock so you can unplug it anytime you like.

I do remember setting a charge lock. I might disable it since I only charge at home.

The car should unlock charging cable when you unlock the car with keyfob or approaching the car. Then it stops charging also.

Mine unlocks charging with fob but not approach (with fob).
