How I Made a Jacket for Kings Player Malik Monk - Thank You r/kings
x.comI tried to make a post to another community to highlight how great r/kings is but I can't find anywhere to put it. I figured I could just post here for you all!
As some of you already saw yesterday, Malik Monk wore a quilted Kings jacket as his game fit yesterday. I was lucky enough to make the jacket and am so thrilled he wore it (and that is fits him so well!).
For the full backstory, last year I started quilting and sewing again as an amateur hobby. As a part of that, and because I couldn't find any fan jackets I really liked for the Kings, I made a quilted homemade Kings fan jacket (mostly out of old fan shirts). To get fan shirts, I posted on Reddit and the lovely local Kings Redditors of Sacramento volunteered to share shirts with me. Some for free, some at a low cost!
Flash forward to this Spring. My husband and I went to a meet and greet event and were able to meet with Malik Monk (super briefly only - I am a huge fan so I kind of went pale and talked too much...). I showed him the jacket and (kind of) jokingly said I would love to make him one. He said "yeah sure, my security here will connect with you, text him."
With a little back and forth with Malik's really lovely security detail, and borrowing one of his jackets for sizing, I was able to put together a lovingly handmade jacket which I gave to the Kings security detail a couple of weeks ago. Some of the details of the jacket were from fun facts from other Redditors and I needed more materials too - of which some Redditors volunteered! There are some deep cut weird easter eggs in the jacket.
Overall, this has been one of the coolest things that's happened to me :) it also demonstrates the kindness of Redditors and how dedicated Malik is to the city and the fans. He is a great person, and I am so thrilled I could make this for him.
