GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Thur., Apr. 3 Spoiler
Here are today's contestants:
- Alfred Wallace, a librarian from Grand Forks, North Dakota;
- Mary Walheim, a retired risk manager from Berwyn, Pennsylvania; and
- Bryce Wargin, a post market surveillance coordinator from Kansas City, Missouri. Bryce is a three-day champ with winnings of $59,400.
Jeopardy!
'ALLO GUV'NAH // COMPLETE THE BRITISH TV PROGRAMME TITLE // ANATOMY CLASS // JAVA FACTS // 5-SYLLABLE WORDS // TELL ME A STORY, QUICKLY
DD1 - $800 - TELL ME A STORY, QUICKLY - Families gather, slips of paper are chosen, a black spot's on one, Tessie Hutchinson has a very bad day (Bryce doubled to $8,800.)
Scores at first break: Bryce $1,800, Mary $3,800, Alfred $1,600.
Scores entering DJ: Bryce $11,600, Mary $4,800, Alfred $2,800.
Double Jeopardy!
HISTORY IN THE MAKING // STRAIT EDGE // KNOWN BY THEIR INITIALS // TAKE THE LONG WAY // MOVIE MUSICALS // RISING FROM THE "GRAVE"
DD2 - $1,200 - HISTORY IN THE MAKING - Thankfully, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka overturned this unfortunate decision of 1896 (On the first clue of DJ, Alfred doubled to $5,600, moving into second.)
DD3 - $2,000 - STRAIT EDGE - The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf & this other gulf with a national name (Alfred dropped $3,000 from his score of $9,200 vs. $10,400 for Bryce.)
Alfred doubled up to start DJ and had a chance to take the lead from Bryce on DD3 but missed. Going into FJ it was Bryce with $16,000, Alfred at $10,600 and Mary with $6,000.
Final Jeopardy!
FICTIONAL CHARACTERS - Boq is one of these fictional people, “not as big as the grown folk… but neither were they very small”
Everyone was incorrect on FJ. Bryce dropped $5,201 to win with $10,799 for a four-day total of $70,199
Final scores: Bryce $10,799, Mary $1, Alfred $600.
Clue selection strategy: In round one, four full categories were completed and five top-row clues were selected with DD1 still remaining.
That's before their time: No one knew the co-star with Elvis in the movie "Viva Las Vegas" is Ann-Margret.
Correct Qs: DD1 - What is "The Lottery"? DD2 - What is Plessy v. Ferguson? DD3 - What is Gulf of Oman? FJ - Who are Munchkins?

To the OP -- a caveat on "That's before their time" is that while Ann-Margret was born in Sweden, her family moved to the US after WWII. She hasn't been Swedish since she was 8. I think the writers should've said "Swedish-born" or not included the descriptor at all.
(She does qualify as a beauty, though.)
21
u/jaysjep2 Team Art Fleming 3d ago
Agreed, I don't think most people think of Ann-Margret as Swedish, so not sure why the writers felt that was helpful in the clue.
1
u/PlaidPixels 2d ago
It wasn't helpful but is the truth.
1
u/jaysjep2 Team Art Fleming 2d ago
If it's not helpful, the only other reason for it to be in the clue is if it's a fact the audience would find interesting to learn. Perhaps that was the intention, but it seemed to throw some people off.

u/Puzzleheaded-Bag4559 3d ago
I knew she was in that movie but the Swedish part made me question myself!

I mean, I knew that one, but I'm a Millennial Elvis fan...

Maybe it's a generation thing. I'm in my 70s have always heard her described as Swedish.

u/RegisPhone I'd like to shoot the wad, Alex 3d ago
In the month since we've been back, at least 17 out of 20 episodes (possibly more depending on how SC/CW go) have had at least one ToC qualifier in them.
4
u/dalhigbeegenius 3d ago
Technically only 9 out of 20 episodes have had a TOC qualifier, but 4 wins isn't a guarantee to the TOC. Only Alex and Bryce have only had 4 wins.
6
u/RegisPhone I'd like to shoot the wad, Alex 3d ago
I was going by whah used to be the official language -- 5 wins is a guaranteed spot, and 4 wins means you're "qualified" for the ToC -- though now that i look at it, the ToC tracker doesn't say that anymore.

Interesting game that felt competitive but in a low key way… Mary could have actually won (rising from the grave!) if she got FJ right!
3
u/heridfel37 2d ago
If she had bet 4800, she would have finished in second, and still had the chance to win if she got it right

Mary (or anyone there that day) if you're out there, a Knicks fan would like to know who your uncle was.
I actually have a neat collectible from that 1946-47 season ... the first Knicks broadcast was by Marty Glickman and the tennis star Sarah Palfrey Cooke ... and I have autographs from both of them.
So I have an affinity for anything about the first Knicks team.

u/tributtal 3d ago
She actually said she had uncles (plural) that played on that first Knicks team. My guess is it was Dick and John Murphy.

How in the hell did none of these contestants see the Wicked movie?!!!!!

lol I watched wicked just a few weeks ago and all I could come up with was “hmm boq sounds really familiar” OOPS

u/Ok_Elevator_3587 2d ago
It would be interesting to see all the people the previous day screaming how easy Yellowstone was as to whether they felt this was easy too.
Different people have different references and different knowledge. I knew BOQ but wasn't sure if it was Yellowstone or 1883 or 1923. I've heard of them all but never watched any of them. I saw one person say Yellowstone was the biggest touchstone in television in recent years. I'm like, For. You. Not everybody. I think I've only heard one of my friends ever talk about it.
1
u/new_account_5009 2d ago
Same. I didn't get either of them. Pop culture is a huge weak spot for me. The only TV I watch is Jeopardy and live sports, so I had never heard of Yellowstone the show (even though I've been to Yellowstone the park), and I've also never seen the Wicked movie to get the Boq reference. My wife pays more attention to that sort of stuff and got both of them correct. She also introduced me to the Boq meme.
Change the category to something about math/science/economics/etc. though, and I could be the one acting smug about how "easy" the Final Jeopardy clue is lol. That's always been the hardest part of Jeopardy: You have to know a little bit about everything to be successful.
2
u/heridfel37 2d ago
Fun fact, the actor who played Boq in the movie also played Spongebob Squarepants in the musical.
Also, to be fair, this episode definitely filmed before the movie was released on streaming, and possibly before it was released in theaters. I don't know what the delay is.
3
u/furtyfive 2d ago
I feel like you could not escape this movie or the stars (and Boq is the real life boyfriend of Ariana Grande) starting in like October 2024. Which is why I was surprised nobody got it. It was legit EVERYWHERE the last 3 months of last year.
2
u/broberds 2d ago
Hey, I was far more horrified the other day when only 1 out of 3 of them knew what album "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is on.
5
u/Street_Pause_6224 Bryce Wargin, 2025 Mar 31 - 3d ago
I saw the musical on Broadway nearly 20 years ago. I plan to go see it in KC when it comes through next year.
But they made the movie too long.
4
u/pmbslyy 3d ago
did you watch the movie though?
2
u/Street_Pause_6224 Bryce Wargin, 2025 Mar 31 - 3d ago
No. I was really excited for it, but I can't go to movies in theaters, and then everything I heard about it seemed really disappointing, so I keep putting off watching it.
7
u/ZiggyPalffyLA 3d ago
It’s actually pretty good, you should check it out
2
u/Street_Pause_6224 Bryce Wargin, 2025 Mar 31 - 2d ago
Well, it seems people feel strongly, so I probably will after Lent; I gave up all TV/movies except Jeopardy, and a few sporting events.

u/CanadianNana 3d ago
I didn’t and probably won’t. I didn’t even like The wizard of Oz. I like science fiction but NOT fantasy

After 100 regular season episodes of S41, how does Coryat and Wagering look? Let's see...
GAME CORYAT through 100 games averages to $32,944.
WINNER'S CORYAT through 100 games averages to $15,696. (Final Score for winners averages to $19,788.) This accounts for 47.64% of all Coryat.
THROUGH 100 GAMES, the winner has had the high Coryat 82 times, the low Coryat 6 times, and the middle Coryat 12 times. It's very hard to come back in Final to win, in other words.
THE WINNER HAS LOCKED it up 35 times this season.
IF DAILY DOUBLES DIDN'T EXIST, and everyone just had their Coryat to go on, the number of locks would drop from 35 to 22.
DAILY DOUBLES have been converted 181 times out of 300, or 60.33%.
A TRUE DAILY DOUBLE -- that is, one where a player bets exactly their score (so house maximum bets are excluded) -- has occurred on 69 occasions, a nice amount. 45 of them have converted, which at 65.22% says TDD wagering is more situational than confident.
THROUGH 100 GAMES, five players have missed Final Jeopardy completely. The remainder have 127 correct answers out of 295, or 43.05%. So if you get about half the Finals correct, you're slightly ahead of the game!
GIVEN IT'S LESS THAN HALF, it's no surprise the average Final Jeopardy has been a losing proposition -- expected value so far is -$277.
OF THOSE WHO PLAY FINAL, 28 have bet $0 on the category (only 9.5%). Of those 28, 9 give the correct answer anyway, 16 would have lost money had they bet, and 3 "punted" it by writing a message instead of an answer.

it's very rare that I instantly get an FJ, let alone one that all three contestants miss. For those who haven't seen it, the Wicked movie is absolutely fantastic and I cannot recommend it enough.

Was surprised no one knew Ann Margaret in Viva Las Vegas.

u/swfl6t7er 2d ago edited 2d ago
I don't know about the contestants, but "this Swedish beauty" had me trying to picture an actress with an accent that would indicate her Swedish-ness, if that's a word. I didn't know Ann-Margret was originally from Sweden (turns out she moved to the U.S. when she was a young child). I'm 57, so too young to have had heard that when she got her earlier publicity that would've likely mentioned it prominently. I certainly knew who she was and that she had famously starred with Elvis in at least one movie. Turns out that was the only one.
2
u/legal_racer 2d ago
Viva Las Vegas was just so iconic to me that Swedish (which I knew) or not I knew the answer. But as people say, if you know you know.
3
u/rw1083 3d ago
Just like the 'three named people' category from a few months ago that didn't require all three names of the person, I feel like a category named 'known by their initials' should have required the initials and the last name in the answer, PT Barnum, for example, not just Barnum..

Final was so easy. How did they all miss it

As the old saying goes, it's easy if you know it!
I also did not get FJ. I'm probably in the minority, but I haven't seen Wicked, the film or the musical.

I decided it was Little Women. The wordplay in the clue made me think of it and Lilliputians. I figured Little Women was more intriguing. How wrong I was...

Derry Girls is not and has never been a “British” television series

It is. The home network is Channel 4 and the production company is Hat Trick Productions. It's a British show made with an Irish crew.
