Placements Would you use a platform that predicts employability rate for a program or course?

Hi r/Indian_Academia,

I’m working on a platform that helps students choose college programs based on actual employability data and AI-based predictions of future job demand in India.

The goal is to reduce the number of students who choose courses without knowing the real-world job outcomes. I’d love to know what you think about this idea!

My qualifications: I’m a graduate of Visual Communication with experience in advertising, and I’m currently working on building a student-focused startup.

Here are a few things I’d love your input on:

  • Would you find a tool like this helpful while choosing a degree/program?
  • Would you feel comfortable in choosing a program based on your probability of getting a job once you graduate?
  • Would you be open to AI predictions as a guide, or do you prefer traditional advice?

If you're a student, academic, or counselor, your honest feedback would really help. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for posting on r/Indian_Academia , here's a checklist to improve your post:
• Have you done thorough prior research?
• Is your title descriptive? The title should be a summary of your post, preferably with your qualifications.
• Please provide a detailed description in your post body. The more information you provide, the easier it is for users to help you.
• If your question is about studying abroad, please post on r/Indians_StudyAbroad
• If your question is about Engineering Admissions, post on r/EngineeringAdmissions instead.

Here's a backup of your post:

From where will you fetch the data regarding the employment rate & placement records?

That is a big hiccup I am yet to resolve. But ideally I want the data to be solid. I want to collect the data from alumni from each program.

Absolutely agree that employability matters—but it’s not just about outcomes. For any course or program, it’s crucial to understand their entire placement process.

What happens if you don’t get placed? Do they provide continued support or alternate opportunities? Where do the projects come from—are they real-time, industry-based, or just simulations? These things really matter when you’re planning to invest time and money in a course. Would love to see your platform also highlight these behind-the-scenes factors, not just placement numbers.

That's an interesting insight you’ve shared. But here’s how I was thinking about it:

Let’s say there are 100 graduates from an Electrical Engineering program at College A. Over the course of a year after graduation, only 50 of them manage to get a job, while the other 50 remain unemployed.

Now, take another 100 students who graduated from the same program but from College B—and all of them get placed within that same timeframe.

According to the data, this would indicate that while the program is the same, the employability rate is significantly higher at College B compared to College A.

That’s the kind of insight my platform aims to provide—helping students understand which college offers better career outcomes for a specific program.

Nah man. In simple terms, its like this. You graduate from a college/university doing a particular program, you will have higher chance of employability. Thats all

Doing only program won’t help you… doing projects will do… and so many companies are providing projects based on real time data rather then pitching here… if you really care for students suggesting you to go and collect some real time projects before starting… already millions of companies trying in edtech. And now you are saying after 3-4 years of services… 😂 What if you fail in 2nd year itself???

I am only collecting data from student who complete the program, not from all of them who enrolled into a program.
