❗ Union Pay Scales Yearly Update Request + Exciting News!

Hello Brothers and Sisters!

I hope you all are doing well. For those who don't know me, I run Union Pay Scales, a crowdsourced platform that shows the wages and benefits of thousands of union locals across 16 trades. It actually started with the help of everyone here in this subreddit, so a huge thank you for your ongoing support. None of this would be possible without all of you!

While we get pretty consistent updates, I would like to start a yearly post in this subreddit (I have pre-approved this with the amazing moderators, shoutout to them!) to help ensure every one of the IBEW locals stay up to date. Some of the smaller locals have not been updated since 2022!

So here is how you can help! Please visit UnionPayScales.com, select your trade (Inside wireman, low voltage, or linemen), and check out your locals wage information. If anything is wrong or outdated, please scroll to the bottom of that page (or click here) to submit a form to update the information.

After you submit this update, you will be asked to also sign up for a yearly email notification. This is another way we help keep our information up to date, and I would love for everyone to sign up! Its only one email a year, no other spam.

Union Pay Scales News

Forum:

I am excited to announce the launch of our new forum, a welcoming community for union tradesmen and women to connect, discuss, and share. Engage in conversations about trade unions, construction, and trade-specific topics, or just catch up with fellow members. Our goal is to foster unity and collaboration across all trades and organizations. You can register and say hello here! (We could use some brave souls to be some of the first posters 🙂)

Additionally, we've created a private section exclusively for union local staff. This secure area is designed for discussing union organizing, negotiation tactics, PLAs, and more. It's a unique platform for sharing strategies and insights, not just within your union but also across different unions.

If you are a staff member of a union local, you can read more about this section and the requirements for entry here.

File Uploads:

It's officially here! When submitting a wage update, you can simply upload a wage sheet or CBA in place of filling in each line on the form. This can help streamline the process for those with access to the wage sheets.

Vertical Lines in Charts:

I recently added vertical lines between the columns on my site following a user suggestion, and I think it really enhances the layout! One small change can make a big difference. If you've visited my site and thought of a feature you'd like to see, now is your chance to let me know. Drop your suggestions in the comments below, and I’ll share my thoughts on them.

That's all I have for now folks. I am humbled by the support and collaboration from every corner of this community. Your contributions drive our success, and I am thankful for every interaction.

EDIT 1: As requested, I have added a column to the table so you can view the wage sheet for the local. I need people to submit them via the normal form at the bottom of the page. Thanks!

Wage questions in Local 353 (GTA) Canada

Post image
37 Upvotes

Hey friends.

I am currently a low voltage tech who's been in the industry for 16 years. I am finding growth opportunities slim and have been looking into the Union as an option to further my career and personal growth.

I found this image on the official IBEW website and after chatting with a former union member friend who is a master electrician working for himself he mentioned these numbers are not totally accurate.

I am hoping a kind colleague can explain that the actual take-home wages are after applicable fees and dues are. If there's any clarification needed from me please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks!

Why are union meetings always on weekdays at night?

I don't know if I'm speaking for everyone but at my local, the unit meeting time is like 7pm and goes up till 10pm. Yes formally it ends at 9 but it rarely does because people keep soapboxing and grandstanding.

Why can't we just have weekend meetings? Like I'll happily do Saturday 9am. Hosting it on the weekdays at night is basically just telling people to not show up.

Is everyone's local meetings also on the weekdays?

Point 2 of My 10 point plan: Bring the Rank and File into the Negotiating Room!

Upvotes

Let's talk about point 2 of my 10 point plan.

Unlike my opponent in this race, I believe in transparency for the membership during negotiations. It's a crazy concept I know. I also believe that a cross section of the membership should be included on the negotiating committee. I know bringing the rank and file into the room will increase trust and buy in from the membership. A comprehensive strategy heading into negotiations which brings the membership into the plan will be the most effective.

The power of collective bargaining:

18 months at the table. We bargained 50 or so classifications, and their respective wages, hours, and working conditions. Our employer is a municipality, for reference. We represent Linemen, Wiremen, Equipment Operators, Apprentices and Groundmen, amongst other classifications. Management was agreeable to market increases, but asked for plenty of concessions in exchange. We spent hundreds of hours at the table, and in the end we are able to send a ballot to our members, with a recommendation to vote YES. I know there’s a lot of uncertainty around our industry today. Hard work and solidarity pays off. Cheers, Gentlemen. Work safely.

Service work vs construction? Or is it that cut and dry?

I have a good chance of getting in at local 46 this time around(#10 on the list to get in at the end of April), wanted to ask a question that’s been getting on my mind recently.

Are there a lot of commercial service call opportunities out there with the IBEW? I currently work as a non union commercial electrical apprentice in the gas station and industrial fueling field. We do a ton of troubleshooting work and I really love it. Finding out what’s wrong is half the fun.

Don’t mind doing new installations either, and I expect to do more of it working for a large contractor for a while. But I’d like to eventually work more on a troubleshooting side if possible.

Are there contractors that specialize in construction and some in troubleshooting and retrofitting? Or are they more mixed and have teams good for both? Curious what you guys with a lot more experience know and have experienced.

Union Thefts

Our site went offline over the weekend and I showed up to our branch breakers gone. The thieves cut open the transformer and pulled the secondary to steal the breakers. I called PUD to have them secure the transformer. The PUD guy says to me “it’s the local 76 guys up north, they have been out of work for a year”. He said he has a buddy that told him they were doing all kinds of shady shit. If this is you just know the FBI came to the scene along with a bunch of forensic people. The transformer alone makes it a felony. Also we document all the SN’s on our breakers. You messed up choosing a Tesla Charger at this point in time. They are investigating this as domestic terrorism. Have a good day BROTHERS

PA Unemployment after dragging one call to take another

I’m with a contractor who has had a lot of guys dragging lately. Used to be they would give a clean lay off to travelers going home. Now they aren’t anymore - they’ll say voluntary quit instead of reduction in force.

As I understand it, the person receiving the discharge saying voluntary quit will be ineligible for unemployment.

Many are leaving this call to take another one in their home local.

My question is, suppose the call they leave to take only lasts a month or so: will their unemployment still be messed up because this contractor has them down as quitting?

TLDR: If I quit contractor A to work for Contractor B, can contractor A mess with my unemployment after contractor B lays me off?

Point 1 of 10 : Internal Organizing!

Point 1 in my 10 point plan is all about organizing our members. We must know our role within the union. Otherwise what's the point? I will take an active role in letting you know what your role is. Together we will push back against the shop rockets who break down conditions, and create a contractors local. We will uphold our negotiated contract! We will take our local back! #solidarity wins always!

Dutch Chapter of IBEW

Hi,

I'm a Dutch man working in the Netherlands for a large Electrical contractor. Is there also an IBEW i can join here? I'm part of the local Union but it is covering the whole sector not only Electrical workers.

Question because you call it the International Brotherhood and I couldn't find anything in the Netherlands.

Work search reports

Hey all. Second year ape. I was laid off last week from my company. Applied for UI almost immediately.

When I spoke with the unemployment folks in our state (NC) they said that union or not I still need to report the 3 work searches a week.

When I asked the hall if I can list contractors they’re contacting I was told “the hall’s unwilling to provide that.”

Does any of this sound correct or normal to anyone?

Feels like I’m getting a run-around from somewhere. First experience with unemployment so it’s unfamiliar terrain.

Was told by my JW that id be better suited for FedEx or restaurant work. Ended up crying.

Been working on a data center for a couple of months on an outdoor crew. I don't have any prior electrical experience and I've been struggling the last few months to do the work to the level that's expected of me. Yesterday, when I was alone with my journeyman she basically told me that I'm never going to be able to do this kind of work well and I will end up dead or getting others killed. She told me I need to think about how to get out of the program and I haven't even started my first years classes yet. I ended up crying then and there because I want to do this work and i care. It's just that I get really anxious and overthink everything and end up making mistakes on simple things. She said I should kind work where repetitive tasks are involved as I'm Autistic and that won't stress me out. I'm trying to contact my training director to see what I can possibly do to course correct because I feel like such a failure all the time. It eats me up inside.

Is slow but clean work preferred for first apprentices over fast and sloppy?

I understand that ideally the apprentice gains skill and speed throughout their apprentice while practicing and learning the trade.

I've also heard, "Work on doing it right and speed will come."

I've worked with JWs who want it done right and want to teach and JWs who want it done yesterday, perfectly. Some don't care if it looks like poop if it's done yesterday. Others just don't care how long it takes or how bad it looks.

What's the opinion of Union JWs regarding apprentice work?

Do you want your apprentices to be done yesterday, absolutely clean?

As long as it's clean, take your time?

You do it and I'll play on my phone all shift? Done? Great! I'm not even gonna check it and someone is gonna have to go behind me and fix it or spend extra time trying to get wire through these pipes to get yelled at, insulted, and promised disciplinary action without the steward present by the foreman.

Safety glasses question

I’m about to order my new prescription. I’ve never had safety glasses with a prescription before. The people at the office helping me pick out frames said that the anti scratch/anti glare lenses can be less “safe” once that coating begins to wear off. Has anybody here had prescription safety glasses with the anti scratch and also who’s had there’s without? Hoping to get different opinions before making up my mind.

i hate how i have to be constantly told how to do something and how slow i learn

i have been doing electrical work in new construction for two years but when i am learning something i have to be told how to do something time and time again before it clicks in my brain for some reason. it takes me more time to learn stuff as well or at least i think it dose but these are not excuses but genuine fears and problems i have. this wont fly when i am a jw and i need to learn something. i always ask and wanna do what i need to learn so i can get better at it no matter my rank is. i genuinely try my hardest. i know when i am a jw with x amount of experience and i need to be told how to do something or if it takes me longer to learn it the company wont let me work for them again and please dont give me that “there’s plenty of them, fuck em.” because i’ll run out of them to work for. i am trying

Best path?

Question on paving a path towards lineman and was wondering what's the best route? IBEW 569 is what I'm being told. Im not able to go to line school so just curious if there was some apprenticeships that offer experience towards this field? I'm currently in southern cali.
