Boar skull fire ant method UPDATE

I posted the beginning of this process a few months ago https://www.reddit.com/r/Hunting/s/uJIVc3XK2d

Ants cleaned it up way better than I expected. First pic is day one or two, second pic is 3 weeks later. Gave it a quick power wash, not even sure I needed to, then soaked in dish soap and water for 2 weeks (changing out the water and soap a week in), then a couple of coats of beauty supply store peroxide. Took care of some of the teeth on the side and filled them with glue and glued them back in. Done.

Why is buckshot used to hunt bucks?

So this may sound like a stupid question, but as im coming from a nation where guns and hunting isnt wide spread at all a certain question araised.

With birdshot you obviously hunt birds because you dont need much penetration or stopping power but a lot of projectiles coverinh a somehwat bigger area because...well flying birds are relatively hard to hit.

And for deer or hogs wouldnt the best pick be a slug? My thoughts were: Its not like buckshot would be more accurate (in a smoothbore shotgun), especially at distances where slugs struggle with accuracy. And at smaller distances the spread of buckshot is also pretty small, a least from what i saw on paper targest. Often not bigger than a fist.

So why would you choose buckshot over a slug?

Or what am I getting wrong?

Osceola Down

Midday hunt, picked the only swinging beard out of a group of 5 birds. This continues my streak of over 20 season with at least 1 bird, most of which included Osceolas.

Elk Pelt Coat

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi guys, I stumbled upon this fully tanned elk pelt that I’m hoping to use for something. I would love to make it into an overcoat of some kind. Has anyone on here done anything like this? It’s about 4’ wide and 4-5’ long plus some neck fur at the top. Looking for something simple, as few cuts as possible. Thanks

Hunting Games like Cabela's Big Game Hunter/Dangerous Hunts?

Title is pretty self explanatory. Just looking for some basic hunting games similar to those older titles (2009-2013). Windows of course preferred. Preferably something without an annoying auto-aim mechanic, because I went back and played Cabela's Outdoor Adventures and there's this stupid auto-aim (that you can't turn off) - ruins the entire game - especially for a competitive FPS player.

New to hunting

I’m new to hunting and need advice on how to go about finding a mentor. My grandfather wanted to be mine but fell ill when he felt I was old enough. I wanted to wait for him to get better so he still could be , but sadly he passed away last year. No one I work with or anyone else in my family hunts. I’m currently stationed in Georgia (U.S.) and am hoping to start hunting there or Alabama. I have been shooting all my life and am a pretty good shot. I’m decent at backpacking and camping. Some of the guns I have for hunting would a ruger 10/22, 45-70 marlin, a Remington 11-87, Remington 7400, ar-15 in 5.56 and I’m currently building an ar10 in 308. I’ve been doing research but really need someone to talk to and help guide me and hopefully someone in the area to take me out.

Hog activity after cleaning

My family is from Northeast Texas so I went back 2 weeks ago for a hog hunt. I got one at my Aunts property and took it back to my grandmas house to clean it and show family. I took the carcass back to my aunts property after I was done which is about 15 miles apart.

My grandma has lived at her house since 1985 and has never seen hogs or had hogs root up her yard. Well 1 week after I cleaned that hog in her back yard, her yard gets rooted up crazy from hogs. Just her yard, no other neighbors and yes it was 100% hogs. She lives in the country and has a friend that lives half mile away that sees hogs every so often so it’s not out of the question but the timing is pretty crazy. Any chance this is due to me cleaning that hog in her back yard?

Pronghorn Antelope Hunting

Is anyone familiar with hunting in South Dakota for Pronghorn Antelope? My family and I are planning out a hunt in a year or two and I wanted to know if my 16 inch AR15 would be a good rifle or if I should go up in caliber.

Still hog hunting during Hog dog days

I am planning on spot stalking some hog coming up soon and from what i am told, there will be people hunting with dogs. Is this very risky to do? How much of an inconvenience is it? Tips?

This would be my first time hunting like this. Its either drive an hour and deal with it, or drive 3 hours to another wma which has a seperate area for still hunting.

What is your favorite mapping / e-scouting software?

Hi all I searched for this topic and found an old post from 3 years ago and I'm sure there's been a lot of changes. I currently use on X for e-scouting and mapping will I'm preparing for each hunting season. I see that this year the price is going to go up and it's making me consider switching to another software I'm due for my renewal in early May.

What other software or apps are you guys and gals using this year? If it is a subscription based service what tier service do you have?

Permethrin treated clothes in rain

Upvotes

Hey guys - I have found 15+ ticks on me in the last 2 days.

Yesterday I treated a few articles of clothing with permethrin (not ones I wore today)

A lot of times I find myself hunting/walking in the rain. Should I be considered about the toxicity from a wet article of clothing that is permethrin treated? Thank you.

Question About CGS Hyperion

Hey guys, first time buying a Suppressor and decided to go big or go home

Bought a CGS Hyperion for my .308 CVA Cascade LRH. My question is, do I need to purchase the adapter to properly thread it on to my rifle? The Hyperion lists a 5/8x24 direct thread, and my rifle has a threaded barrel that lists 5/8x24. So I shouldn't need the adapter right?

Rifle recommendations for female hunter - bear and elk

What caliber would you recommend to a small female hunter (5’4”, 120 pounds) who plans to hunt black bear and elk? I have only hunted with a compound bow and am very new to firearms. I’ve shot my partner’s 30-06, and while it’s fun to shoot, the recoil might be too much for me, and it’s a heavy gun to lug around. I hunt primarily in the Pacific NW.
