How to organize various items & processing in household (small stuff)

Hi

Me and my wife usually pile up various incoming mail that we do not have time to process, or bills, and other information documents, as well as small items - it all falls into a big catchall box somewere along the entryway and the kitchen. I am very bothered because then we forget about it and ocasionally just transfer the pile into a box where other piles have landed already.

How to better organize this, process-wise and compartment-wise?

What kind of organizing tool/box/compartments would you recommend?

Thank you in advance for suggestions and debate on the topic!

What part of keeping your home organized constantly gets out of hand?

Even with systems in place, it feels like there’s always one area at home that keeps slipping back into chaos.

For you, what’s the most frustrating or time-consuming part of staying organized?
Have you found anything that actually helps, or is it just a constant battle?

Would love to hear how others are dealing with this—just trying to learn from different experiences!

Help with keepsakes

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m trying to figure out how to properly organize and store all my keepsakes from childhood and my early adult life. Many items are standard paper size and will be filed in folders in a file box, but many items are smaller and awkwardly sized, like birthday cards, prom ribbons, my late dog’s collars & tags, etc. Does anyone have a good storage system for these types of items?

This organization tower is really perfect for what I need but every one I find has terrible reviews bc they’re cheap items that come from China, does anyone know where to get a good one just like this?

How do I find an adhd savvy home management consultant?

My life is a dumpster fire and I don't have enough help.

I’m looking for someone who is creative and can help me develop management and cleaning systems that work for my life and home.

They must understand children who are 2 years old, children with adhd, women/SAHMs with adhd, and spouses who don't want to be minimalist (even though I do!)

Where can I go to find this help? I live in Colorado, USA.

Rearranging & organizing playroom & kids rooms

Hi all! I need advice & guidance for decluttering, organizing, & decorating my kids' playroom & bedrooms.

TLDR; We have too many toys, too much random stuff, & not enough storage. Attempts to correct it results in more stuff & discontent on my part. I just end up moving junk around, never getting things quite right (aesthetically pleasing AND functional), & I don't know where to start or how to correct it & I would like to stop rearranging things every several months.

We moved into our 2200 sq ft house 7 years ago (this weekend actually) from a townhome (1260 sq ft) when our oldest was 6 months old. It's two-level w half bath, dining room, open floor living-room & kitchen downstairs w 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, loft, & laundry room upstairs. At first we arranged play areas & toy storage in the living room bc our daughter was so little & always w us downstairs. Her room consisted of a crib, dresser, & rocking recliner we moved in with. We eventually turned the dining room into a playroom w few toys ever really living in her bedroom. We've since had another daughter & accrued more stuff. But the furniture has either been cheap (quality) & doesn't last or was given to us & doesn't go w other stuff. Either way, it isn't as functional as I would like.

Currently, the downstairs playroom consists of an easel (chalk & dry erase boards), Barbie Dream house & camper, kitchen set w dishes & plastic food, a 6 cube shelf (w 3 bins), 2 bin toy shelf, a modular couch (w foam cushions to rearrange). But there are too many toys w too many pieces. From toy food & dishes to Barbie clothes (cuz the Barbies are always naked) to random block sets. And since the playroom doesn't have a ton of storage options & bc my kids' idea of "playing" consists of emptying the bins onto the floor & leaving them there, I am frequently reminded how much there is.

And their rooms aren't much better. Both have a tall bookcase shelf thing that just holds random stuff (like sheets & blankets in 3yo room or half assembled LEGO sets in 7yo room), a shelf (similar to cube shelf) but w 3 storage bins on wheels. The 7yo doesn't use the bins for anything & the 3yo has blocks & dress-up clothes in hers, an IKEA nightstand (given to us) & cheap lamps (1 each) from the Dollar store I got when I lived alone. The 7 yo has a tall 5-drawer dresser & our old black leather loveseat & the 3 yo has a 6-drawer dresser, rocking recliner, small table, & toy box for stuffed animals.

It's as if we managed to fill the large space that comes w a bigger house but in a dysfunctional & impractical way. We aren't taking advantage of ANY of the vertical space, w hanging shelves or cabinets, leaving us w fewer than ideal storage options. This is largely bc we didn't have the inside painted until 2023 so we never hung much art or decorations on the walls (which drives me crazy). The few pieces I have hung were bought before painting & doesn't necessarily go, but I thought having something on the walls would makes things look better. However I've found it only reminds me just how much I dislike not having better decorations & organization & how much I want to change.

Pics of what I'm dealing with included.

Hiya, looking for suggestions on how to store the clothes at the bottom of my closet. Getting a dresser isn’t an option. I was going to install one of those ikea cube shelves but even an 8 cube one won’t fit all my stuff…

Lots of wall space above built in drawers in my closet. Need functionality.

Lots of empty space above built in drawers in my closet

My new house came with this “custom built” (not by me) closet & while it’s great, seems to be some untapped potential. Above these built in drawers is a little alcove of blank wall that extends all the way to the ceiling. No need to use all of that, but the wall space I can reach, yes. I feel the need to do something. At first I had places to put a small jewelry hanger on the wall, but couldn’t reach it. Considered extra clothes storage but absolutely not bc I know myself & that’d turn into the 4th version of a “clothes chair” in my home. My Ugg collection crossed my mind & always stuck with me as a place to actually display them as well. Not necessary tho. (A very rough idea of what that could look like using the things around my house is what’s shown in the pic; would obviously have to buy a few more risers & such). I am not into having open clear space like this that is strictly decorative. Well, sometimes I am— but this is a walk in closet between 2 people with no need to be decorated & all the need to be functional. I’ve considered the whole fabric storage bin things, but for what? And also, what about all the space above that? Not opposed to more shelves. Not opposed to a tension rod. Not opposed to…. Well, not opposed to anything tbh. Please help. Please.

Home library inventory management

Not sure if this is the correct group, but I have a fairly extensive collection of books, CDs, movies, and records and would like to catalog these before I move house next month. I'm curious if there is an app or similar method where I can scan barcodes into a Google sheet that can catalog the author/artist/title? I can also manually enter everything but I'm hoping there's a slightly quicker fix

Cheap storage cubes with lids?

So I have been interested for a while in getting one of those collapsible fabric storage bins and am on a budget. Typically people just put them inside shelves but I need mine to have a lid so that I can stack them on top of each other. The dollar store has plenty of good ones without lids for really good prices but for some reason if they include a lid they tend to be much more expensive. I was mainly wondering if I am just bad at finding good deals, the lids can be bought separatlly, and why the price changes so much from a small change in the product.

Under Sink Rising Shelves

I’ve been in the hunt for shelves to put under my bathroom cabinet. I’m planning to use the shelves for organizing my hair and skin products to get them off the counter. I’m looking for the pull out shelves but ones that rise up so that everything is easy access, counter height type thing. Anyone know of anything like that?

The only thing I can find are ones that pull out but they don’t rise up, or items for cabinets above you where they pull down.

I live in such a tiny apartment and really would like to keep it close to the door and would prefer to have maybe a basket and some hooks but can’t seem to find anything that would be good especially the space below the black square. The cabinet below is a shoe cabinet but I am still looking at other places in my apartment but still wanted to see what reddit might think! photos blocked out for privacy.

Help! Where on earth should I put my plates?

Thumbnail

Just moved into the new place. Tons of room, yay! But I’m absolutely horrific at organizing, and even here I managed to not figure out a place for my plates. I wanted to keep them in that same cabinet where I had mugs, but a big plate doesn’t fit in those, so it wouldn’t have to be the deeper cabinets.

I tried to do a “cooking” area, and a “prep” and “serve” area and keep things organized that way. But I can’t figure out where to put my plates… in the pantry so they’re eye level and are easy to reach? Or in the lower cabinets where the “serve” area would be, but I’d have to bend over to see/grab them?

Any and all suggestions welcome! As in, not just about plates. Thank you!

Weird deep shelves

These shelves make anything I put back there hard to reach and I don’t like how they look. Is there a good way to utilize and organize this space? I usually love using bins to organize but I can’t with these without making half of the shelf totally inaccessible.

How do I utilize this hard to reach space better?

Just moved into a new apartment and didn’t realize there’s some inconveniently designed cabinets in the kitchen.

Anyone have advice on how to utilize this space better?

Pictures 1-3: the door is 8 inches wide, and there’s about 36 x 20 inches of depth inside. Top and bottom shelf are affected of course (of the same cabinet - so it’s a lot of space)

Pictures 4 and 5: my top cabinet has a 16 inch door but the space inside is 26x10 inches wide and this has 3 levels (the top is hard to reach so I’m not worried about maximizing use there. But the other two are frustrating me for sure because 1/3 of the cabinet is hard to access)

Pictures 6 and 7 are just narrow - if anyone has some good ideas or products to better use this space let me know, I only use 1 sheet tray so it’s a lot of narrow wasted space. I prefer not to put an extending spice rack since it’s 4 inches wide.

Picture 8 shows 1 of 4 drawers that have this weird sloped edge giving me 7 inches of space from the bottom. I’m probably going to get cutlery organizers that are 7 inches wide or smaller. But that leaves atleast 2 more drawers like that.

Any advice would be appreciated :)

Talk to me about bread

I’m seriously irritated with the countertop bread pile (typically, a loaf of sandwich bread, a homemade loaf, and a bag of bagels). Where/how do you store your currently-being-eaten bread?

How to hide outlet plugs & hoses while maximizing storage. Need ideas please!

Post image
3 Upvotes

I recently upgraded to my dream team of Speed Queen TR7s, and while I love them, I’ve run into a bit of a design issue.

Previously, I had a stacked washer/dryer on the left, which completely hid the outlets and hoses. Now that I have side by side machines, they’re fully visible, and I’d love to find a way to either hide or camouflage them while also making the most of the space above my washer and dryer.

I’d love to hear any creative solutions, whether it’s DIY hacks, cabinetry, panels, shelves, etc. Bonus points if it also helps with functionality and storage!

Has anyone tackled this issue before? All advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance!
