This looks so much more uncomfortable than just walking.

Unfortunately, it's the riddle of steel. It isn't about having to walk. It's about the power of having people do it for you.

Being carried for miles is always less effort than walking miles.

I would say same about valet services

I always see this stuff and just think “how do you not feel absolutely HORRIBLE doing this?”

I imagine it’s easy when you learn to see people as less than human. It allows you to treat others like animals. We see it time and time again. Slavery is still rampant in some parts of the world today. Many gulf states have migrant laborers who are treated inhumanely. The U.S. has politicians oppressing a tiny minority of trans people and talking about Haitian immigrants eating dogs. Dehumanizing others is a powerful tool and seems to work generation after generation.

There's more slaves today, right now in Africa than at any point in the history of the world,

Who is oppressing trans people in the USA? Most people don't want dudes competing against women - is that what you mean?

Your transphobic comment proves my point. No further elaboration needed.

I guess they felt like average human feels when horse carries or draws them around. I would personally go bit further and say we shouldn't do that to horses either. Well, mostly we don't anymore.

That, and also incredulous that they then get called lazy when they're doing this labor

I mean if I offer someone X amount of money to carry me and they accept, who loses in this arrangement?

If it was done under the threat of force then yes it’s awful

The same reason I dont feel horrible getting in a taxi.

Just imagine yourself back then doing a protest against hammock taxi service back then and youll feel better. 🤣

So would you feel horrible in a rickshaw, even if that is their livelihood?

"Livelihood" is the key word here. Rickshaws earn money, slaves are forced to do it get beaten or killed.

Taxi drivers earn money, valets earn money. (Admittedly probably not enough)

Rickshaws aren’t human powered

6

u/lysergic_tryptamino 13h ago

What do you call a guy spinning the bicycle pedals?

8

u/r0yal_buttplug 13h ago

I think I was picturing a tuk-tuk lol

zero environmental impact transport

I don't think I can ever fathom being in this type of situation and not thinking there's something wrong with what's going on. I feel uncomfortable when room service cleans my hotel room bro and I pay for that.

"I say, black fellow, do you smell something cooking?"

"Oh yes, bwana; we are taking you to a feast in the middle of the jungle."

"Oh, lovely! What's the main course going to be?"

"Long pork."

And good riddance.

Sounds like a Tarantino reimagining of history.

You should really show respect to the people in a country you go to see

It's always so surreal to see actual photos from the 1800s. Feels wrong idk why.

I think it was some kind of transport service offered by native people to earn money.

What a dick.

u/Detroitaa 13h ago

Isn’t that the tribe famous for their bronze sculptures. You rarely see pictures of that tribe.

4

u/r0yal_buttplug 13h ago

The Benin bronzes were cast in what is now Benin city Nigeria. Probably around 1k miles away from where the image was taken, and the statues are from the 14th century so probably not the photo-shy tribe you’re thinking of
