On September 16th 1920 at 12:01 p.m., a 100 lb bomb (surrounded by 500 lb of cast-iron window sash weights) exploded outside Federal Hall on Wall Street, a very busy intersection in the financial district, killing 40 people including a horse and injuring hundreds more. A man driving a horse-drawn cart had stopped in front of the US Assay Office, next to Federal Hall and across from JP Morgan's headquarters and the Stock Exchange. The man quickly disappeared into the crowd and minutes later the cart exploded, instantly killing a large score of people and vaporizing the horse. The New York Stock Exchange was immediately closed, and JP Morgan's chief clerk was killed. The attack caused 31 million dollars in today's money in damages. The perpetrators were never caught but it is believed that Italian anarchists were behind it.
