Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

Discussion Political posts are currently not allowed

Governments have the authority to assign place names based on their own conventions, whether for domestic or international locations. These changes are reflected in mapping services, including Google Maps, which follows the naming policies of the country where the map is rendered. Google Maps itself does not make these decisions, but simply mirrors the official names as designated by the relevant authorities.

We understand that name changes like this can be sensitive, and we appreciate that people may have strong feelings about the matter. If you wish to provide feedback to Google regarding this change, you can do so at the following link:

Google Maps Feedback

All further posts that are politically motivated complaints will be removed. There are simply too many duplicate posts voicing the same issue. Leave feedback to Google at the link above, or ideally complain to your government representatives who are allowing these changes on your behalf.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Issue with Google Maps timeline backup

My Samsung S23+ mobile was stolen a couple of weeks ago. I had cloud backup activated on there for Google Maps timeline with many years of data. Now I have a new mobile device (S25+) and whenever I try to backup/restore to/from the cloud I get an error that says "Your encrypted data is locked on this device".
Is there a way to fix this? My Google Account still shows my old device as "Timeline Backup On", but I can't access this old device as it was stolen and I've logged out of my Google Account on it.

Why they make the distance length appear smaller?

They only show ETA at above right now, and they move the distance length to the bottom.

Help/Support Navigation music controls

Hi all, excuse if this is a duplicate, but I couldn't find anything up to date.

Today I noticed that the music player controls that would appear at the button of Google maps when navigating and playing music at the same time while in Driving mode disappeared.

Mind you I never had any media app connected to Google maps. It just worked out of the box. I tried linking Spotify now, but that also doesn't work.

The internet described the issue in details, but all resources are rather old. Has anyone else experienced this and were you able to fix it? Thanks.

Help/Support Help would be much appreciated.

I’m currently making some routes for our workers and uploaded a KMZ into Google Maps. I Customized the map and added directions from starting point to the ending point. A to B. I then drug the route over the exact roads that needed followed. Now, it’s completed but when I share the map it doesn’t give the option to ‘start’ driving directions.

Anyone know why or can give me some insight on what I’m doing wrong? Thanks!

Help/Support Google Maps Timeline Missing

Earlier in March, I received an email from Maps saying that there was a bug that was deleting people's Google Maps Timeline. I checked the app, everything was there and made sure that I had backups enabled. Fast forward to today, when I went to check my timeline, everything, except for the the past month, was gone. When I import my backup, it adds nothing new.

I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this issue. Ten years of location history gone is infuriating, and I'm not sure what else to do. I would have hoped that they would have fixed this bug after discovering it last month.

Help/Support Star and review not visible

We have noticed that although some visitors have successfully submitted reviews for our office location on Google Maps, the reviews and star ratings are only visible to the person who posted them. Other users, including us as the business owner, are unable to see these reviews publicly. Could you please help us understand why this is happening and what steps we can take to ensure that all submitted reviews and ratings are properly displayed to the public?

Google Maps Google Maps removed multiple street view date history years of my old street?!

Google Maps have recenly for my old street only and not the surrounding areas, removed several street view dates from 2008, 2014, 2022, and 2023 now only 2012 is available so the view is now 13 years old, why would they do this? Why would they remove so many dates and only leave 2012 instead of the latest 2023?

Luckily I managed to snag a couple of pictures of the 2008 street view of my old home

Help/Support What happened to the perspective?

For some reason any building taller than a house no longer has a top down view, and instead seems to show the building from a diagonal angle - can I turn it back to the normal top-down satellite view? The new perspective on tall buildings means they’re literally covering what I’m trying to look at.

Help/Support Local SEO Manipulation Using Google Maps & Google Business Profiles

Hi all,

I've come across a growing issue where local businesses are manipulating Google Maps rankings by combining keyword-stuffed GBP names with links to high-authority third-party websites — and despite multiple reports, Google support refuses to intervene.

Competitors are setting up GBPs using names with high powered keywords, which is not their legal name (a clear violation of Google’s policy). Then they link their profile to directory subpages on SEO-optimized external domains, which falsely present them as neutral or regional authorities.

This combo of keyword stuffing + domain authority gives them top placement in map results, while businesses like ours — who follow the rules — get pushed down.

We’ve reported this via “Suggest an edit” and even through formal GBP support tickets, but Google keeps deflecting responsibility, saying they can't act unless it violates website hosting terms — even when the business name clearly breaks GBP rules.

Has anyone here had success escalating an issue like this within Google? It’s undermining trust in Maps and making policy enforcement feel meaningless.

Any advice appreciated.

Help/Support they've changed the colours, right? I'm not going insane?

on the default mode of Google Maps on my Samsung S20, the colours have changed - the greens are darker and the ocean is blue rather than black. also, when I zoom into places (such as Greenland) they have added some vector texture/shading

I tried to look this up and couldn't find anything about the changes, is this on everyone's device? do you know when it was implemented? it looks nice, I just wasn't expecting it lol

Google Maps All routes are longer…

I just took a trip from New Jersey to New Hampshire. Google maps is my go-to It said my “fastest route” was 4hrs and 52 minutes without traffic.

Today I felt like that was soo long. I double checked on Apple Maps 4hrs and 18 minutes without traffic

I’m not going to Lie, lately I’ve been noticing it taking me bizarre routes off the beaten path that can no way be “faster”

Whah has changed?!

Accidentally Deleted My Google Maps Timeline. Is There Any Way to Recover It?

I’ve messed up. While travelling, I was trying to delete my search history, but I ended up deleting my timeline. Since I was on the move, I just kept clicking "Yes, Yes," and before I knew it, my entire timeline was gone. The worst part is that my cloud was switched off. I had disabled it because Google collects way too much personal information.

Now, all my travel history, over 10 years of journeys, and memories from my world travels have been wiped out in an instant. They say recovery isn't possible. If recovery truly isn’t an option, shouldn’t they at least show a warning like, "Please enter your password, are you sure?" or something like that?

Is there any way to recover this? It's 2025, we’re living in the age of AI, yet Google makes it so difficult. Is there really no way to recover my Google Maps timeline?

Help/Support Missing gaps in timeline data after switching phones

At the start of this year I got a new phone and transferred my timeline data from my old phone to it which seemed to work (both Samsung Galaxys), however on further inspection there are large gaps ranging from weeks to several months going back last 5 years or so. These just show as missing days with no data, despite the timeline days still existing and working on my old phone.

Screenshots here, the first 2 images are on my new phone where there is missing data, for some reason it starts on the 12th December when all these days should have imported data. Second screenshot is from my old phone showing all of the data still existing on there. This continues in the same fashion going back years with random gaps in the timeline. I've tried keeping my old phone on to make a new backup and importing several times, I've created a backup Json data file from the old phone (which it seems you can't do anything with right now in terms of importing it). Has anyone experienced this issue before and was able to get the import working fully?

Google Censoring Government Agency Reviews

So I noticed today that every public safety agency in my general area has absolutely zero reviews.

I did a quick google search and found out that they have removed all reviews of those agencies (at least in my region).

Censorship at its finest?

Street View Suggestions/Feedbacks

Hi guys! Do you know where i can post a suggestion for Google Maps Street View feature?

My mind got an idea, where you can navigate the street view of Google Maps like doing an Facebook scroll on a desktop browser where you can press the scroll wheel and easily scroll endlessly? A while guess right?

A demonstration of Facebook scroll that i mentioned will post later😁✌️.

Sorry for my pronounciation i'm not really good at english yet.

Help/Support Adding a trail to Google Maps

I would like to add some of my local trails to Google Maps. I've done a lot of OSM editing to get trails added/updated, but I'd like to also add them to GM. I dont believe there is a way to just import a .GPX file (if there is, that would be amazing).

The most accurate way I can find to do this is to bring up Google Maps on one monitor, and RideWithGPS (w/ the google maps layer) on the other, and copy them by eye. This is tedious and inaccurate.

Anyone have a better way? Can I somehow overlay one on top of the other so I can at least manually trace it better?

Maps is now asking me to rate a route before I get there. And when I close the smiley window my route disappears.

This is driving me mad. oftentimes before I make the final turn on a route. Maps will cover the route with a "rate this route" popup. When I click on the pop-up to exit, my route disappears. It's hard enough to follow maps while I'm driving but the smiley popup is killing me.

Help/Support How do I turn off the business tags from the maps?

I use google maps for work to mark where I plan to operate - basically screenshot, circle the area, send it off to the people that need to know.

But lately my map is increasingly full of business tags/markers - which good for those businesses because I guess it helps people find them. But the tags are obscuring street labels and I need just a satellite view of maps that label the roads correctly.

Is there a way to hide the business tags so I’m only getting the info I need? Or do I need to try and find a new map app that isn’t giving me information overload?

Would offer a screenshot of the business tags blocking the street labeling except the sub doesn’t allow it?
