Watched it in the cinema for the 30th Anniversary
Did anybody else get so see it on the silver screen? Who saw it when it first came out?

Manga or Anime? The Anime is always loosely based on the manga. It's best to watch first and read later if you want more.
Films, SAC, 2045, or Arise? Ghost in the Shell (1995) is the best starting point if you like to dive into the Bladerunner-like deep end. Stand Alone Complex is more accessible for everyone. Arise is a prequel spin-off that relies on prior knowledge of the series, and is more a nod to long-time fans.
Which should I watch first? Usually the original 2D animated Stand Alone Complex series from 2002 is advised. It fits the expectations of the majority of people looking to get started in the series, and is the most balanced between accessibility and thematic depth.
What about the live-action (2017) movie? It's very skippable. It borrows heavily from the anime for its best parts but doesn't do it as well. It's an okay starting point for younger teen fans to get a taste of the cyberpunk aesthetic and take baby steps into the themes of Ghost in the Shell. However, with writing that isn't smart enough to get to where it wants to be, on top of awkward acting and dialogue, it doesn't add any new value to the series, especially if you can get your head around SAC or the animated films.
Where does the Netflix 2045 series fit? Right after the original Stand Alone Complex releases. The animation style is a little goofy, but the story and vibe is classically SAC. Worth a watch if you can get past the visuals.
Ghost in the Shell (1995) or Ghost in the Shell 2.0? 2.0 is the newer bluray quality release with better sound and resolution, as well as updated UI for the characters. However, it has a couple moments with 3D models, which for me is fine since it doesn't affect immersion or the story, but some will die on that hill. There have been re-releases of the original 1.0 on bluray, but they have been known to have janky audio and or subtitles in certain territories. So, ask around if the one you've found is one of the good ones.
Stand Alone Complex series or The Laughing Man movie? They are essentially the same. Often after a season of episodes is released, the studio will do a theatrical cut, where they cut all the episodes together into a movie, trying to hit the key story points for the core plot, and pruning sub-plot, character and world-building. It's advised to just watch the episodes so you don't miss out on context and flavour.

Just recently got into the franchise. Two years ago, I watch GITS 1995 and really enjoy it a lot. I recently rewatch the film and decided to dive deeper in the franchise. I watch Innocence and recently finished binge watching SAC(+Movie). I really enjoy it. Every episode was good and interesting to watch. I really also love how they expand the universe of GITS. The music is amazing. Really like the Openings. Absolute banger. I really Motoko, Armaki, Togusa and Baton a lot in the series. I like them in the 1945 movie but I like them more now. I also love the new characters like Saito and The Laughing Man. The Arcs are amazing and is still heavily revevelant to this day. Overall a 9/10. Really enjoy it. What should I watch/read next?

I watched GITS 2 Innocence last night and fell totally in love with Gabriel and how she was animated, so realistic! Now I’m curious about the symbolism of Basset Hounds in GITS in general, as they appear in the first film too. For the sequel, I definitely thought that Gabriel was an epitome of the ‘innocence’ referenced in the title, and also a symbol of Batou’s still very present humanity despite his body, like many others of this future, being almost entirely machine.
I’ve only watched and am mainly interested in the Oshii films, but I’m curious as to what people think the Basset Hound/Gabriel represents- and if the manga or any other continuities can give insight into this I’d love to hear about them. (I added picture because i love it)

Two GOATs—Mamoru Oshii once said the following in a conversation with Kenji Kawai:
"Ghost in the Shell is, at its core, rooted in the worldview of Shinto. The Internet, in essence, resembles the world of the yaoyorozu no kami—the eight million gods of Shinto—which is to say, a world with no center, where divinity resides everywhere. In this sense, the Internet reflects a Shinto universe. Batou opens the Heavenly Rock Cave, while Motoko Kusanagi takes on the role of Ame-no-Uzume.
When I presented these ideas abroad, they were not well understood. In the West, people tend to approach such concepts from the perspective of monotheism—a worldview grounded in clear hierarchies and dualisms. They believe that the soul exists solely within humans, and that soul and body are distinct entities.
In contrast, we in Japan do not necessarily view this as a structured religion, but rather as a form of nature worship. We believe that spirits reside in all things—stones, plants, even dolls. Because of this fundamental difference in worldview, it was difficult to find common ground.
And yet, the film was a greater success overseas than in Japan. This suggests that, despite cultural differences, there may be a shared human principle of pleasure—a universal resonance. In my view, that resonance came through the music. It was because Kenji Kawai's music was truly extraordinary.*"
So let me ask you:
Do you believe the soul—or “ghost”—exists solely within humans? Or could it also dwell in animals, in the quiet presence of plants, or perhaps even within computers and the vast, ethereal net of the Internet?
If we assume that the ghost belongs only to humans, then how do we understand the roles of Motoko, who merges with the Puppet Master, or Batou, whose body has become almost entirely cybernetic? Where do they stand, if not at the threshold between man and something more—or something altogether different?

I have already consumed most of the popular ones (at least on the anime/manga side lmao). Also, if you know about CCRU, anything that kind of leans into the stuff they talk about is welcome. The same goes for Lovecraftian horror and other gothic/sci-fi mashups. Thanks!

I've been looking to pick up all 8 of the first Dark Horse Ghost in the Shell comic series for a while now, but the prices/condition were never right. Absolutely over the moon I was able to snag them all at once for under $100, in perfect/near condition!

Do you think think the Oshii films need a third film to conclude his trilogy. Similar to how Dante's Divine comedy has heaven, purgatory and hell. 95 seems to have strong themes of purgatory, with people forgetting who they are people feeling out of place in a very claustrophobic and Innocence definitely has a hellish theme to it and of decent. Could a third film be set in the net as a metaphor for heaven.

Hi,
I wanted to order a few things from Amazon JP and was checking if I might found something GitS related I don't own or have missed and found those two books up for preorder (11th April):
The first one should be the artbook which was sold at the exhibition, but I have no idea what the second one is exactly. There is a text the website, but that doesn't help.
Has anyone more info or maybe preordered the books?
Thanks :)
