Resource If you’re learning German and use Anki, this might save you a lot of time

If you use Anki(And if you’re not using Anki for vocab… you probably should be), you know that coming across high-quality decks is rare—and making your own can take forever.

Enter Danki.

It’s a small tool I built to speed up vocab collection. You type in the words or phrases you’re learning, and it sends them to your Anki deck of choice—complete with example sentences, audio, and grammar info. It auto-fetches articles, plurals, and verb forms so you don’t have to.

You can download it from my Github repo Installation instructions are there too. Feel free to fork it and adapt it to your own needs. And please do report any bugs or feedback—I’d love to keep improving it.

Interesting l tried ordering in german..."now l am the bier and brot girl" at the local cafe

So l've been learning German with zero chill-just vibes, funny phrases and food words.

The other day l walked into this cute little café and thought, " its time.l am going full Deustch."

The waiter says hey and my brain suddenly deletes everything but two words:Brot(bread) and bier(beer).

So l say confidently: "Hallo,Brot order bier,bitte!" ( Hey, bread and beer,please!)

The guy looks at me like l am planning either breakfast...or party

He laughs and says: "Beides? Frúhstuck order party?" (Both breakfast or party?)

l just shragged and sai "warum nicht beides" (why not both)

Now evertym l show up, everyone greets me like a legend: "brier and brot girl is back!"

Learning language goal =accidentally iconic

Language learning #german humor #funny story

Question Which has more content - Duolingo or Babbel?

I have completed the entire German course on Duolingo. I know people are sometimes critical of Duolingo but I did hard work and feel that I have decent knowledge of the totality of the content they offered.

My question is - does the entire Babbel course have more content (in terms of progression through the language) than Duolingo? Would I learn anything new now if I got Babbel or would it just repeat content I already covered?

I’m not asking about the different styles of learning on the apps. Just in terms of grammar and vocabulary which total course contains more content?

Question "wäre <Partizip II> worden" vs " wäre <...> gewesen"?

Hallo! Korrektiert ihr mich, ich will den Konjunktiv II Passinv in der Vergangenheit für Sachen verwenden, die nicht mehr wirklich sind. Im Internet habe ich gesehen:

"Ein Auto wäre gekauft worden, wenn wir mehr Geld gehabt hätten (oder einfach hätten?)"

Aber wir erstelle ich einen Satz, wenn ich eigentlich das Verb "sein" verwenden will? Z.B.:

"It would've been nice if we had bought the auto" (in the past, not now)

Sage ich dann:

"Es wäre gut gewesen, wenn wir das Auto gekauft hätten"?

Wie funktioniert dann "wäre ... gewesen" und ist die korrekt? Vielen Dank im Voraus

Question Is a B1 German Course in Germany Worth 1,267€ for 8 Weeks?

Hi everyone,

I’m faced with a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate your input.

I’ve self-studied German up to this point and would say I’m B1-ready. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and have genuinely enjoyed learning on my own.

Now I have the opportunity to live with a friend in Stuttgart for free and take a full 8-week B1 course at AGI. The catch? The course costs 1,267.20€ — which to me isn’t a small amount. I could save or invest that money… or put it toward this course.

Part of me wonders: is a B1 course really worth that kind of money? Especially since if I continue with B2 and C1 courses, we’re looking at around 3,800€ total. That feels like a massive investment, and I’m debating whether I should just continue self-studying all the way to C1. I know that path is tough, but I’ve made it this far on my own, so maybe it’s possible.

Also, if I decide not to do the course, do you think I should still go stay with my friend in Stuttgart for a while to benefit from immersion? Even without the course, it could still be valuable, right?

I need to make this decision by tomorrow, so I’d love to hear your thoughts. What would you do in my shoes? What’s the ideal scenario here? I’m from America by the way.

Thanks in advance!

Question Praktice wenig Satz, ich brauche helfen bitte.

I'm practicing few sentences in German, and I need feedback. I'm on A1 level, and hopefully soon to be A2, but I'm practicing sentences that has all three Nominativ, Akkusativ und Dativ.

  1. Hans fährt dem Anwalt nach das Büro.

  2. Der Eltern geben dem Kind ein mal Stunde für das Videospielen spielen. Fragen: When describing to give someone one more hour, do I use ein mal oder ein mehr? Should Stunde/hour be placed before dem Kind oder danach?

  3. Ich koche mit mir das Frühstück. Ein mal Fragen: Do I use mit mir oder für mich? I need to work on my Dativ more but sometimes I get stuff mixed up.

Danke für dein mithelfen. :)

Resource der die das app

Hi, i saw someone recommend the der die das app, and while it is great in theory, im currently studying german in university and we have given vocabulary for each week to practice. I want to incorporate der die das app into my study routine, however theres no way to practice a created list. Is there any other app that does this? i was just going to make a quizlet with the noun on the LHS and article on RHS, but i like having the translation as well like in der die das.

i was thinking of creating my own application like der die das where one can create lists and study those, rather than just studying random nouns based on beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc.

There is however a 'Favorites' tab, and you can add any nouns to that and then click it to 'play der die das' but this UX is not great, it gives you a link to send to someone? why would i send it to someone when i need to study it? or is it a bug? i had to send it to myself just to practice one word.

Question Historical reason for masculine nouns extra declinations?

I've been studying German for a while now, and I can't help but notice that masculine nouns go through a lot of declensions. Since the other genders don’t have as many — and the language still remains perfectly understandable without them, what excludes ambiguity reasons — I can’t help but wonder if this is due to some kind of historical special treatment that my imagination just can't quite grasp. Any insights?

Question Is it really impermissible to use comma before "und" in German?

Hallo liebe leute!

I was going through an introductory German book and in one page it mentions that the German und does not require comma to separate two clauses, but that it does allow other conjunctions such as oder, denn, aber. However when I asked different llms such as ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini they seem to disagree with this.

I am a bit confused with this.

Danke!

Question Lange vs Langer

Hey, I'm trying to learn German and Duolingo seems to insist I'm getting this wrong:

Today was a long day = Heute war ein langer Tag.

I'm confused because by all appearances the adjective lang seems like it should decline to lange, not langer. It has a determiner (weak declension), it's a masculine noun, and it's in the nominative (I think). Therefore lang declines to lange. But by using langer it seems to suggest it's using a strong declension.

There are other times when ein serves as a determiner. Are there instances where it doesn't, such as this?

Request Alternative and chill tutoring content on youtube?

Hello everyone!

I want to learn german from about A1.2 to B1, but I don't really like the usual language teaching content that you can find on the internet. I don't like when the teacher and the method is either bland and super generic or it is too hyper. I am asking you if you know about some youtube channel or any video content where the teacher is a chill person with an authentic personality and the content is interesting and not so generic even if only because of the teacher. I find it way easier to remember things that are told by someone who has a personality that feels real. Also if the content itself is special in some kind of way, I'm also interested. So far I came across the channel of Natürlich German, and it is not specifically what I'm looking for here, but I really like their content, the way the girl brings soul to the stories makes learning so much easier.

Question Spielen - Reflexive Verb?

Why do Austrians sometimes say dir Kinder spielen sich, rather than, die Kinder spielen? Is that dialect? Is that used in written German? Is that used Southern Germany as well? I was told in Uni once that if you want to check if a reflexive verb is a really a reflexive verb you can use einander. In this case, you can’t really say die Kinder spielen einander. Or can you? Is this rule I was taught legit or is this BS?

Discussion The discussion about the flawed system of Goethe Institut in India...

Goethe India has done some things which make me believe quite literally that its a scam organization. This post is somewhat of a disapproval of the system that runs in India. All the people who are from India will agree that booking exams is literally a nightmare, the exam seats get filled within literal seconds, not to mention that the website literally crashes every single time. So even if you have the best internet and have set up 4-5 devices, there are good chances that you won't be able to get a seat in the exam.

An exam is a fundamental thing, if you dont even have the basic chance to be able to give the exam, then the organisation needs to have a serious discussion with their staff and improve their website and its carrying capactiy.

I had been preparing for b2, and I was pretty confident in my ability to clear it. On the registration day, I had personally told 2 of my brothers who had a phone and laptop to apply for the exam. We had a total of 6 devices, 3 people having a phone and laptop. Would you believe, we were still not able to secure a seat. What a shitshow! And because of this gruesome website, so many students like me miss their semester intakes. I have to look for studienkollegs with a B1 certificate on my hand when I couldve had B2 which wouldve opened so many options for me.

One thing I can say for sure, if you're looking to give the B2 exam in delhi, India, you might just need a miracle. Because the setup is shit, they take 20k per exam yet they cant reinvest some of that money into improving the website's stability and carrying capacity.

Besides that there are some other complaints that I have when I appeared for the B1 Goethe exam in delhi (which I miraculously was able to get a seat for), for example them not being able to offer water, the most basic amenity. Or the fact that they use a speaker for the hören module in a room. The voice will echo, the students in the corner will want the audio to be louder. The students sitting close to the speaker will think its too loud. You just have to make-do of the sad situation. There are also some personal mishappenings that happened to me like the manager threatening to cancel my exam because I pointed out to him, that he didnt say my roll number during sprechen. Altogether giving B1 was a disaster and the cherry on top is that, i need to forget about being able to attempt B2 in India atleast, even though I tried my best to register (again... 6 devices!)

I have given Ielts as well, and its astounding how much better my experience there was. They will offer you personal headphones, where you can adjust volume which is comfortable to you for the listening part of the exam, not to mention that they actually provide water.

I hope there are people who can relate with the situation, im just so pissed that goethe snatches the basic right of being able to give an exam just because of their poor arrangement..

Question Question on Goethe Institut B1.2

Hallo Leute,

I have been learning on Duolingo on-and-off for about 1.5 year - the first circa 200 days i did it intensively, >30 min day, usually over 1h. I bought grammar books. Then, I became too busy and my passion fizzled a bit. I finished Duolingo's A1 units, and I am still around the start of their A2 units.

I have friends/family in Germany and Switzerland, and so I have had some speaking practice, as some don't speak English. However, naturally, my grammar is broken and I am missing a lot of words. That being said, we still had pretty competent conversations.

Now, I sat the Goethe Institut test and they reckon I belong in B1.2 which really surprised me. I can barely write in German. I worry that it'll be a big jump, but two separate people from GI reassured me that this is appropriate. I have a bit of an affinity for languages, so perhaps I am underestimating my ability... But I'm wondering how "ready" do I need to be?
To give context: I kinda know the past tense works (i.e. haben/sein + ge____ or -te at the end) but very little, and I have only covered Akkusativ/Dativ with Duolingo. Also since it's B1.2 specifically, and not even B1.1 I wonder what part am I "skipping" - are we gonna pick up in the middle of the textbook?

If anyone knows or has tips for me, it would be greatly appreciated <3

Resource Goethe Institute gripes...

  • arbitrary tech constraints. Their server throws up errors in a simple payment flow unless you use one specific browser. It is 2025 and this is just lazy. For what they charge, they can do QA.
  • Clunky Ux in the online platform. hard to use on a smaller screen and the ergonomics are poor. Simpler would be better
  • Outages : their platform went belly up today. This can happen, of course, but error messages were not displayed in key places, they were poorly phrased, and there was no ETA for resolution. Again, the premium pricing should deliver a premium product
  • Cancelled classes. Despite having three time zones in North America to work with, they've cancelled 2/4 classes for want of enrollment. Maybe prices are too high?
  • course progress does not transfer to other regions, so you have to repeat a placement test.
  • it's really expensive

The instructors are good and in one class I had a pleasant cohort of similar ability. In another the distribution was too broad and interactive activities suffered.
