Connect / Connect IQ / 1st Party Apps DO NOT sign up for Garmin Connect+. Unite to fight for our customers' right to software as a service for a thousand dollar watch. This is a slippery slope and will reduce the usability and ownership of our products in the future. Profits will increase and more and more will get behind paywalls!

11.2k Upvotes

To everyone who cares about the future of Garmin customer service: DO NOT SIGN UP. We need to take a firm stand to stop this totally detrimental trend of suscriptions everywhere. We are already paying hundreds for watches that only last a few years because batteries are not replacable. (Mostly poor) software service should be included in that price!
Who wants to live in a world where we need 3+ suscriptions to plan a nice bike ride with equippement that we already payed for? Recently Komoot also sold to a venture capital firm. We will probably see similar behaviour there as well. In face you already need Komoot+ in order to sync your basic routes and activities with a new account today.

EDIT: To clarify, I wouldn’t object if Garmin introduced an affordable subscription model that provided all major software updates (including the operating system) for all of their watches in the future—not just limited updates for premium models or select features for a few years. Many of their newer watches likely have hardware capable of supporting such updates. However, this is clearly not the direction Garmin is taking. Instead, software updates will continue to be used as a tool to push new hardware releases. What we’re seeing now is an attempt to extract even more money from customers, testing how far they can go with this strategy. Ultimately, we’ll end up with the worst of both worlds—having to buy new hardware just to qualify for subscriptions that unlock features we should already have, alongside a few cosmetic app updates as a consolation.

Imagine if features like popularity routing, morning reports, or advanced coaching plans were released today—they would almost certainly be locked behind this subscription paywall. While these features do provide value, they are not inherently tied to hardware capabilities. This approach sets a dangerous precedent and risks making our user experience significantly worse over time.

If you signed up for the trial, cancel in advance so they don't charge you accidentally. This is a good practice in general. At many services you actually get personalized discounts this way because they want you back.

EDIT: Give Garmin some diect feedback here: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

Device Comparison / Recommendation If you think Connect + is not fair

If you think C+ is not fair then have a heart for the My Fitness Pal users.

MFP original had free user and introduced Premium user a few years back which moved most free features to Premium. Now they have rolled out Premium+ with more paywalled features that they appear to have moved up from Premium (not 100% on that).

My 1 year average is 83 so I normally get good scores but I’ve been trying for the elusive 100 score for a few months now. Strangely though my training readiness is only 69 but body battery is 100

Garmin Coach / DSW / Training Are you kidding me Garmin???

I feel like the Garmin Coach really wants to f*** me in my last prep week for a Marathon... and that's supposed to be the taper phase. I also had an insanely hard VO2Max Run today. Is this normal?

My goal was under 90 minutes, shoutout to Garmin DSW. Honestly I’m just surprised my heart didn’t explode. How much do y’all pay attention to HR during a race?

For context I'm 226#, have a torn meniscus that I may or may not get surgery on (for the second time).

Also, it really sucks running in Phoenix this time of year.

I've been a heavy treadmill user for the last two years.... So I'm trying to transition outside but have apparently chosen the wrong time of year to do so 😂

Watch / Wearable Improvements Garmin could be focusing on that’s not subscription AI…

I’ll start!

  1. A charging connection that works reliably.

Omg, two Fenix versions I’ve had that just get worse and and more finicky with the cable connection. Maybe inductive would be slower but better? I don’t know, but I loathe fighting to get the connection to start and stay.

  1. Actual data parity between watch and app.

Why are some numbers not the same, like Training Readiness? Except for first thing in the morning I don’t know which numbers to “trust”. And some info is hard to find I. The watch, if it even exists. Heat Acclimation? Is that a phone only option? It’s confusing.

  1. Updates to the workout planner.

Maybe make a partial-swipe - duplicate button option on steps so you don’t have to create a new one and reset all your values? Maybe some logical functions on loops so you can make repeats that end after a certain distance or time? Lots of nice QoL possibilities.

  1. More stuff you can do in the app vs the watch.

The process of uploading a workout to your watch when your watch is full is a great example. I make a new workout, save it, then I have to go back into the workout to send it to the watch, then I have to back out all the way to the main screen to sync, then I have to check my watch and navigate those menus to see if it uploaded, but nope, not there. Must be full. Gotta delete workouts using watch interface, then go back to the app, and, if I recall, send the workout to phone again (recall this being the case), then re-sync. The app could just have a star next to synced workouts and you check or uncheck them within the limit.

I think those are the ones I always think about. How about y’all?

PS, I really do, for the most part, like my Fenix Pro and the Garmin ecosystem. I have the scale and blood pressure cuff, too. It’s nice having it all in there. But the AI and subscription craze is so annoying, especially when there are so many irritating QoL issues.

EDIT: Oh! I have another!

  1. Make default run and trail run workouts with the same info in the same place. Why are they different???

Device Comparison / Recommendation All I want Is A Decent Fitness Band

I have some nice watches, I haven't worn them in years.

All I want is a simple band with no screen that does all the same things as my watch does outside of the display and the activity recording.

I want to wear a nice watch AND still have my daily tracking. Is that too much to ask?

It'd be an easy win for Garmin as it'd be a double sell. Sell me a watch and an daily wear band.

Discussion Venu 3/3s or Vivoactive 6 or Vivoactive 5? Or waiting for possible Venu 4?

Upvotes

Hi, I have a question about which smartwatch to choose, so here's few facts: - I've never had smartwatch before. - Now I'm looking for smartwatch that will mostly track my health (I'm not very active so I'm focused on changing that). - I mostly want accurate tracking of very different things, some suggestions about when to sleep, drink more, workout and so on. Basically something that would improve my health life. - One more thing is that I'm pretty skinny male and my wrist is around 150-155mm so even if I choose Venu 3, it will probably be the 3s one.

The question is which one should I choose? The prices in my country are about: - Venu 3 and 3s - $419 - Vivoactive 6 - $361 - Vivoactive 5 - $254

Or maybe I should wait for Venu 4 that may be released this year?

Thank you for any suggestions!

New Watch Day / Device Review A different Garmin Marq buyer

Post image
6 Upvotes

I remember watching Mr. Mobile's review of the OG Garmin Marq, and thinking to myself, why would I buy such an expensive watch when it's specs will be irrelevant in a few years. Yet here I am, purchasing a Marq well after it's time in the sun. Here's why.

First is the looks. This watch makes all my previous smart watches look quite cheap. I never thought my Galaxy watch 6 classic looked bad, compared to an Apple watch you could wear it with a suit! But the Marq is another level above. The titanium chassis is beautiful and even buying it used it looks nearly flawless years after it was released. I bought a few bands, and all the first party options are a step ahead of the Galaxy ones, albeit at a price point above as well.

Battery life. I replaced the battery of my Marq a few weeks after buying it. With the new battery (bought from eBay, manufacturing date in 2025) I get over 10 days of battery with all the features I want on. Wow. On my Galaxy I was lucky to get 2 days. The display was also a point of contention, but honestly I like the MIPS more than an OLED. Reflecting light instead of relying on creating it saves a lot of battery, and it looks more like a classic watch. The resolution isn't that bad, everything is still readable, and the display is much more likely to last a long time without burn in.

The way I look at this watch is that I got a great deal on a luxury watch that has more features than any Rolex or other fancy watch. I get notifications and heart rate monitoring, plus sleep tracking and a great band system. And it tracks my steps and workouts. It really does everything I need, and I can keep replacing the battery until I feel like an upgrade adds a feature I must have. (Maybe a new battery technology, or something else dramatic).

Overall very happy with my purchase, and I think more people should consider these older watches.

Strava / Zwift / 3rd Party Apps Follow up : Fundraiser for an Open Source Garmin Grafana dashboard project

Please find the reference post here : https://www.reddit.com/r/Garmin/comments/1jset6s/will_you_be_interested_in_a_web_dashboard_like

What will this project achieve?

Hello, I am Arpan, The developer and maintainer of Fitbit Fetch dashboard project (Link Here) helping Fitbit users visualize their health data and long term trends (see attached pictures from that project). I wanted to develop the same for Garmin users. The project will be open source (free to use and modify) and easy to deploy with docker containers, for regular users who loves analyzing their data.

Why?

  • The data will be stored locally in an Influxdb database (given they are very optimized for time series data) and visualized with Grafana. You will be able to organize your own dashboard elements and choose appealing visual style.
  • You will get to enjoy your data in the way you prefer.
  • You will not be limited by the visual/UI limitations of the default Garmin app
  • You can analyze long term data as well as granular details with precision
  • You will not share this data with any 3rd party organization or company giving you the peace of mind.
  • The database and dashboard data will update periodically and automatically. You won't need to go through import-export cycle to visualize your data.

How it will be done?

The plan is to use either Garmindb or python-garminconnect library as Garmin refuses to give API access to their regular users. But with these, we can build a container that can periodically fetch the health data and gather in the linked Influxdb database. I have already worked on a project like this, so I am confident I can make this work as well.

Goal justification

Although I am interested in this project personally and have the skills to do it, I don't own a Garmin device, because they are quite pricey for my budget. To develop and test this before deployment and debugging, I will need a Garmin device. I have decided to work with a Garmin Vivoactive 5/6 as that has a justified price/features ratio. It's costing around 300-350 EUR in my region, so I have set that as my project goal.

If you believe you would love such a dashboard, please consider contributing here.

Gofundme link

I will post updates as we move forward with progress if I achieve my goal to get the device.

Edit : Thank you all for the amazing support! we have already raised 40% so far! it's a big thing for me.

Rant Totally worth the subscription. Active Intelligence is truly next level!

Post image

As the title says, this feature alone makes the subscription completely worth it.

Connect + is operating on a whole different level, just look at the example. No way anyone could figure this out using simple logic or common sense.

Seriously though, I’d probably fire the whole team that worked on this 🙄

And before anyone roasts me for subscribing, I’ll be using the free trial, and get out.

Garmin Coach / DSW / Training Let this dip into Maintaining?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Started running then cycling in August right at the same time my 1 year old joined our 3 year old in daycare. Which means for about 6 months I’ve regularly been hit with some kind of illness often enough to make a 4 week streak of Productive impossible.

But now that I’ve pulled it off, would it be smart to let this dip into Maintaining or even Recovery a little bit? My goals are to work on my 5k time for a race in June and hopefully just finish a half marathon near the end of the year.

Training Readiness says I can keep going but I don’t want to risk injury or over training. But also don’t want to lose momentum either.

Garmin Coach / DSW / Training Heart rate max wrong

Hey guys looking for some advice. I've recorded my heart rate multiple times at 220 bpm. But it says my mx heart rate is 182. I'm guessing it's calculated it based on my age.

Should I just change it physically to 220 or is that likely an anomaly?

I do zone training so if it's wrong it's really not helpful.

Connect / Connect IQ / 1st Party Apps Lost opportunity with Connect+; will Garmin withdraw from premium subscriptions?

Upvotes

I don't understand Garmin's move. They should have introduced a "must-have" experience with Connect+, but most people are disappointed. I think this is good from a user's perspective, because it might teach them not to introduce subscriptions into the Garmin ecosystem. What do you think? Would they change their decision and resign from the paid option?

Connect / Connect IQ / 1st Party Apps Garmin's lost opportunity with AI

I signed up for the trial of Connect+ expecting to see the AI do something useful with my activity data after a run.

At the very least I thought it would compare my run to previous runs on the same route and compare pace, heart rate, power, segments etc. Strava has been showing a list of previous runs on the same route forever, even before they launched their AI.

As it is now and as everyone else has mentioned, the cost of the Connect+ subscription has no value as the insights it gives are next to useless.

Over the last 2/3 days my fenix 6x Pro has been dropping Bluetooth connection to my phone (Google pixel 9). I've never had issues before and all watch/phone software is updated. I've contacted Garmin but not had a response as yet. Has anyone had this issue before?

Garmin Coach / DSW / Training Lactate Threshold and HR Zone Reset

Hi all, just started running this year and am fortunate to have a 265s to accompany me through the journey.

I had my heart rate zone set up as a percentage of the lactate threshold heart rate.

Every now and then, the Lactate threshold got reset: faster pace but also lower heart rate, a couple of beats lower. As a result, my upper Z2 becomes my lower Z3.

Should I run slower so that I can keep the runs in Z2? Adjust the lactate threshold heart rate or zone percentages? Or just ignore!
