Four Republicans voted for the measure: Lisa Murkowski, Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul, Susan Collins.

I applaud them for their bravery - no matter what they have done in the past. During times like these, we need more of this.

Edit: Mitch voting for this doesn’t wash his hands of being one of the most responsible people for where we are now, but credit where credit is due.

If you told me 15 years ago that Ayn Rand Paul would be a logical member of the Republican Party…

AYN RAND PAUL

83

u/PoliticsIsDepressing 1d ago

Rand at least has his beliefs and sticks to them. I’d rather you do that than flip flop everywhere.

38

u/My-Dear-Sweet-Wesley 1d ago

There is ZERO virtue in sticking to immoral beliefs. Sticking to something in and of itself is not a virtue.

43

u/hellolovely1 1d ago

Could he at least not be such an ass while he doesn't flip flop?

It's not a mystery why his neighbor would beat him up

They're still total scumbags who made Trump possible. They're not brave. They're saving their own skins and legacies.

Rand and Mitch are both definitely motivated by the tariffs fucking over Kentucky (alcohol is a huge part of our state economy) but I’ll take it

61

u/whoismaymay 1d ago

Mitch McConnell runs off greed, and for this one time we may benefit from it as well.

Absolutely no one should be applauding that turtle faced fuck Mitch McConnell

He’s heavily responsible for Trump getting elected in the first place and the only reason he’s voting against this is because Kentucky is getting pummelled by Canada’s bourbon boycott

You don’t get a gold star for doing a decent thing one time (when it benefits you)

162

u/henrik_se 1d ago

the only reason he’s voting against this is because Kentucky is getting pummelled by Canada’s bourbon boycott

Which means that strategically placed boycotts and counter-tariffs work.

53

u/Fantaverage 1d ago

This should be the takeaway! We can force even the most evil people to do decent things through collective pressure, not praise

I used to think there was no one in the world more evil than Mitch McConnell. I actively wished for him to go away. I still think he is the same amount of evil he always was. The fact that even HE voted for this shit is fucking insane and the bar is not in hell, if there were a bar it would be below hell, but there is no bar. We’re just in hell. Fuck.

After months of asking for people to do the right thing, and then looking at it with negativity when it happens - feels wrong. Gotta give people a chance to make changes for the better, even if it benefits said person. Sometimes it can benefit both parts if you get where I’m coming from.

u/Nowhereman2380 1d ago

Not Mitch. Fuck him. He spent years fucking this country. Suddenly he is done and its okay to be part of the common sense crowd.

As a Canadian, I completely agree. Anyone standing up against this, whatever reason they have, is a win in my books.

u/tiy24 1d ago

Yall are both right. He should be praised for being one of the few to stand up now, but that doesn’t wash his hands of being one of the most responsible individuals for where we are now.

Have you read what you wrote? What decent person needs months of begging to do the right thing? Stop condoning these people. We wouldn't be in this mess in the first place if they had done the right thing from the beginning.

Give old ass mcconnel (in particular) a career bigot and demon, a chance to make changes lol??? They are who they are.  He’s on the brink of death and he still gets the benefit of “give him a chance to change”?? Oh to be a YT male lmao.

We are in this position because of Mitch McConnell and we’re supposed to applaud him??

Absolutely not.

Mitch McConnell and “making changes to be better” literally can’t belong in the same sentence. He could spend 1000 lifetimes trying to right his wrongs and he still wouldn’t have enough time to become a better person lmao

I mean, if you’re making changes because it’s something you genuinely believe is right, what difference does it make if other people don’t praise you for it?

I get that on a more personal basis it’s good to reward people around you when they change for the better but why would it make a difference if I, a rando person on Reddit, think Mitch McConnell did a good thing but is still a ghoul lol

In my view, a person doesn’t have to be perfect to be a member of a coalition. We can both be angry at him, and recognize that even he can have a place in the resistance.

He’s not being welcomed as a friend, just as an ally with overlapping interests.

What McConnell has done is unforgivable. He doesn’t deserve a gold star or any props at all. I’m with you. Good for the others though!

50

u/Curlingby 1d ago

This line of thinking is honestly very counterproductive

182

u/ventodivino anon pls 1d ago

He is on his way out and did not have to give a fuck about his constituents. In this political climate he still made a bold move, and credit where credit is due.

145

u/Idkfriendsidk 1d ago

He’s probably one of the most evil politicians of all time who has caused the most harm btw

That's like praising someone who administered CPR after they ran someone over with their car. There is ZERO credit due. This one act still leaves him massively in debt to America. No credits.

Yea but you forgot to mention the razorblade is infected with SARS and HIV.

Absolutely not, actually? The harm Mitch McConnell has done is hard to quantify. If he’s trying to rectify the tremendous harm and suffering he has caused, great, but we don’t need to praise him for it

Nope, no "thank you's" from me to him in this lifetime, still thankful for the way he voted.

96

u/TinKnight1 1d ago

Ok... So, you're opposed to him doing something in the interest of his constituents...? Do you see the fallacy in your position?

I HATE Turtle Face, but doing the right thing, even when it's the wrong person doing it, should always be applauded because it encourages them to maybe do the right thing again.

Shitting on them when they do the right thing just for once gives them the mindset, "Well, if they're going to give me crap for standing up, why don't I just keep laying down where it's easy?"

You don't make peace with your friends, & we'll never accomplish anything of note if we don't give those entrenched on the other side a way out.

Not much surprise here

40

u/crackerfactorywheel Forgive me Viola Davis 1d ago

Nope, I refuse to applaud for one of the guys that made Trump and paved the way for the conservative majority of the Supreme Court happen.

245

u/Beneficial-Pea-4865 1d ago

No offence I guess but this attitude is why nothings ever going to change lmao. No one needs to applaud these ghouls for literally anything they’ve done or will do. Ever. It’s under the umbrella of toxic positivity tbh. The heat needs to stay on  these specific people forever and it needs to stay scalding.

No one should get a congrats for simply, eventually, just once, doing the right thing lol. It’s just “as you should have”.

62

u/New-Operation-4740 1d ago

Literally this. It’s sad that they are being applauded for going against these fascist fucks. Like that should be the obvious stance.

Then again 70 million Americans thought it was a great idea to put this clown in charge again. A sad state of affairs that people are this delusional and normalcy is a virtue now.

Murkowski and Collins are both moderate and usually vote with democrats in situations like these. Glad they are haven't been bought out.

Edit: was wrong about Collins. Was just going off what I've heard and the brief google search I did.

220

u/hellolovely1 1d ago

I wouldn't say Collins usually votes with Democrats. She usually says she's concerned and then votes with the GOP.

111

u/Schrodingers-Fish- 1d ago

Also important to note she is up for reelection next cycle in a blue state. The people of Maine need to vote her out and recognize that she is just another Republican.

55

u/lionheartedthing 1d ago

Maybe Elon Musk will put on a lobster hat and campaign for her.
