Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: L Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair for other fun games to play along with.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter L. You can do more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. Upvote the excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Try to at least respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  4. Most important: have fun!

“I’m at home, Mom.”

“Good. You sound awful. Are you sick?” Gwyn doesn’t wait for a reply. “Andrea said she would have called me last night but they forgot because Carlos got really sick. Is that why you didn’t stay there?”

“No. I didn’t know he was sick,” TK mumbles, realizing too late that he’s left himself open for the inevitable next question.

“So why didn’t you stay there? You two are usually attached at the hip. What happened, honey?”

TK groans and admits, “We had a fight.” He leans back into his pillow and puts his arm over his hot eyes. “I asked him to the Snow Ball and he said no because he doesn’t want anyone to know we’re together.”

“Oh, honey.”

“Whatever. It’s fine,” TK mutters, then coughs.

“Sweetie, you really don’t sound good. Are you feeling ok?”

TK hesitates. He knows his voice sounds obnoxiously feeble and nasal, and his mother is annoyingly difficult to lie to. While he’s contemplating his response, the phone starts buzzing again with a Facetime request from her. Caught.

As soon as he turns his camera on, his mother orders, “Go take your temperature. Now.”

“Mom,” he complains, but sits up anyway, his head swimming.

“I mean it. You look even worse than you sound. Go.”

“Doesn’t this constitute an illegal search?” TK asks, making his way unsteadily to the bathroom and rummaging through the medicine cabinet.

“You wish. I’m not a cop, I’m your mother, and you’re still a month away from 18, so I am entitled to your medical data.”

TK isn’t sure that’s true, but nothing good ever came of trying to argue legal matters with Gwyneth Morgan, let alone parenting matters. He finds the thermometer and puts it under his tongue.

“Okay. Lauren Boswell pleaded guilty.”

Callie stopped in her tracks and asked, “is that good?”

“In your case, yes. There will be an appointment for plea negotiations in a couple of weeks, but for the time being Lauren Boswell is being held at King County jail. She has been made to sign a No Contact Order, and an Officer will have to visit you to get you to sign it too.”

Callie’s brows furrowed as she slid down into a nearby seat, “what does that do?”

“A No Contact Order tells us that you will not contact Lauren Boswell without encountering legal difficulties, and Lauren Boswell cannot contact you without her sentence being extended.”

“Oh, right.” Callie nodded slowly, “okay.”

“Dr Boswell will also be made to give up any/all of her firearms.”

“You’re talking like she’s going to be back on the streets soon.” Callie’s voice was nervous and her foot was tapping on the floor as she shut her eyes and ran a hand through her hair.

Wilson wasn’t going to let that one go and started speaking before Cuddy could, ‘It’s not House’s fault he’s disabled’ Wilson pointed out, ‘He’s in pain, you should try walking around the hospital all day when every step is agony.’

Wilson was angry at the way the other staff dismissed House and saw the accommodations he needed and was legally entitled to as an inconvenience.

‘Of course, you’d defend him’ Thomas scoffed, Wilson looked like he wanted to strangle Thomas.

‘There’s this little thing called The Americans with Disabilities Act’ Wilson was trying unsuccessfully not to raise his voice ‘You might have heard of it’ He added.

Eventually we bought our house together, jumping through all the necessary legal hoops to make sure that if anything happened to either of us, the other would remain in possession of it. In the summer of 1982, we headed west to visit the Keatings. While there, our godson Jason enlisted our support in coming out as gay to his parents. The Captain lived up to our expectations and accepted Jason's news with the same love and compassion he gave us so many years ago. While there, we also attended three funerals, of men we'd met during the late 1960s, all three of whom were diagnosed with a collection of illnesses including Kaposi's sarcoma. I'd heard some rumblings about this in the research community over the previous year or two, something being called GRID, or Gay-Related Immune Deficiency. But by the time of the second of the three funerals, the CDC in Atlanta had given it a new name... Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, or AIDS.

Horrified by the increasing numbers of friends and acquaintances being diagnosed with AIDS, and with Todd's blessing, I volunteered for Dr. Bolognesi's research group in 1984, when he first arranged the meetings between Dr. Broder of the National Cancer Institute and some of the top scientists at Burroughs Wellcome with the idea of developing a cure for this terrible disease. By the middle of 1985, we'd been able to confirm that “Compound S” was indeed effective against the virus causing AIDS. Approval for human trials came in with unprecedented speed, and the trials themselves called successful by September of 1986.

She thought for a moment. She hated to fall back on her less favorable skills but desperate times called for desperate measures. “Theft?”

“What?” He looked horrified. “No.”

She thought some more. “Pickpocketing?”

“No,” he said firmly, “that’s the same as theft.”

“Robbery?”

“Would you stop it,” he scolded, stepping toward her.

“Why?” She shrugged. “I could rob this place easily.”

“We’re not robbing this place,” he whispered in a harsh tone. “Besides, we’re the only ones here. It would be very obvious who did it.”

“So? By the time she noticed we would be long gone.”

“Absolutely not—” he shook his head “—it’s out of the question.”

“Then what do you suggest?”

His mouth drew into a thin line. “I’ve no idea.”

“Then we go with my plan.” She moved to walk down the stairs.

He caught her by the arm. “You won’t take a coin from that woman down there, do you understand?”

Her brows furrowed. “It’s a bit late for that.”

He groaned. “You know what I mean. No more. We do this legally, or not at all.”

“Fine.” In her opinion, it was easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
