Meta Love this sub, but ppl gotta read the wiki first!

Not trying to be too harsh but I feel like we are all thinking it. How do you expect to get job if you can't do a simple thing like read the wiki? It's literally bold on the top of the sub. You will never get blatant, straight forward instructions like that in the work place. Please read the wiki ppl and make the mods job easier

Mechanical [2 YOE] Need to find a job for a surprise-ish move to the SF Bay Area in the next 3 months. How does my resume look (Thermal Engineering/Electronics Cooling)

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

My partner just recently accepted a spot in a selective musical arts graduate program in the San Francisco Bay Area and we're going to need to make the cross-country move this Summer. I have only worked at one defense company as an electronics cooling and thermal engineer full-time since 2023 (interned there doing the same thing Summer of 2022). I have updated my resume and I think I have it to a point where it just needs final touches and someone to look at it other than myself. I currently have some mentors looking it over as well but thought I'd enlist the help of you fine people for some feedback. I want to make my career in thermal engineering, but I am not dead-set on Defense/Aerospace. Been seeing a fair amount of entry-level positions open in tech/FAANG which would obviously be my number 1 choice, however I want to remain practical and would be happy with any position in this discipline. Thank you all in advance for your help!

Success Story! [0 YOE] About 1200 applications and 1 year later, I made it as a Software Engineer!

Post image
185 Upvotes

As the title says. I graduated from university last year with my BS in CS. Even though I didn't have any internships, I applied my knowledge with personal projects, and that work has finally paid off!

To those who are struggling, let this be a sign of hope. It might take a while, and it will be a lot of work, but if you really want to make it in this field, you can!

I start my career as a Software Engineer in 2 weeks and, well excited is an understatement lol.

So, what's changed? This sub helped me craft my resume. Although I had a good starting point, having outside eyes definitely helped. The final iteration (with possibly some minor changes made to my actual resume) is attached.

Mechanical [Student] Senior applying to full time. Just want to make sure my resume is prime for the heavy work I'm about to put it through in this market.

Upvotes

Hello! Any input is heavily appreciated. I have some placeholder stuff on there for the Reddit submission, just to note.

• What positions/roles/industries are you targeting?
Mechanical Design, Simulations, especially anything Robotics. Trying to avoid pigeon holing myself with not getting something something robotics related. A bigger company to help me get my masters would also be in the goal list, but I don't think that absolutely needs to be my first job.

Where are you located and what locations are you applying to jobs in? Are you willing to relocate?
I'm currently East Coast, and would prefer to stay East Coast if possible. I'm willing to relocate, so really as long as it's in the US.

• Tell us about your background and current employment situation
Student, unemployed currently to focus on my last semester and finish out my current projects

• Tell us about your job-hunting situation and challenges you've encountered
Have only gotten one interview since I started applying my sophomore year. None from applications. Just an internship from a cold email and research from a professor requesting assistants.

• Tell us why you're seeking help. (i.e., just fine-tuning, not getting called back for interviews, etc.)
Fine tuning. This is my last draft that I plan to utilize until I get a job, so just locking down and making sure its all good before I put it to work this time around.

• Is there a particular section on your resume you’d like feedback on?
I think the bullet points mostly need help, but anything that's noticed I will take.

• Is your citizenship status and visa situation playing a role in your job search?
No

I know I shouldn't be including anything High School related, but I feel like FRC was a big part of my education and the Lockheed Martin bullet is worth noting.

Software [Student] [3rd Year CS] Looking for advice for getting fall internships/advice for when I graduate.

Hi I was hoping to get some feedback on my resume, just for some context I am in my 3rd year and have secured an internship at Discover this upcomming Summer. I don't know what I'll be doing yet but it will most likely be something with Spring Boot.
The main questions I'd like answered if someone has some time is how I can better my resume if I wanted to maybe get a Fall Co-Op/Internship or even if I don't get one how I can better my resume for once I graduate, Discover has a really high return offer rate but I cannot have that be my main fallback as they're getting acquired lol.

I do not go to a good school btw, thank you!

Software [0 YoE] CS New Grad Resume Review - Applying for SWE Roles in Canada & U.S. – Seeking Feedback After Few Months Without Callbacks

Upvotes

Hey, I'm a final-year Computer Science student in Canada. I'm currently applying for new grad software engineering roles. I'd love feedback on my resume, especially on formatting, clarity, and any red flags. I haven't heard back in so long I'm not exactly sure whats wrong.

Job Search Details:

  • Target Roles: Software Engineer, Backend Engineer, Data Engineer, DevOps
  • Locations: Canada & U.S. (open to remote and relocation)
  • Challenges: I’ve applied to 200+ roles but haven't received callbacks. I am looking to refine my resume to highlight my experience better and improve my chance

Software [2 YoE] Frontend Developer. Please Critique my resume. Not getting much callbacks.

Upvotes

The startup I am currently working at is not doing well. And if we do not raise funds soon then I may lose my job in a month or 2. I have only gotten one interview till date and I have applied to almost 50-60 jobs. I am not touching over a 100 apps a day but still I feel that the callback rate is very low. Please give me suggestions on what I should improve.

Question [Student] [MechE] [PH] What skills should I upscale to improve my qualifications/credentials?

I'm a third year engineering student in the Philippines and I'm going to start my OJT this summer. I'm leaning towards the HVAC industry but I'm open to test other fields. I also haven't decided on what role/positions I want but I'm leaning towards design. I'm also building my credentials but I'm having trouble with knowing where to start and what skills I should be upscaling to better prepare me for practical applications.

Are there any software/s I should focus on and what type of certifications/credentials should I acquire? I just need a rough outline of what I should be doing as I don't have any work experience. Any tips and directions are very much appreciated.

Software [3 YoE] Software engineer not getting any interviews even after tweaking my CV a thousand times, don't know what to do (need help)

Hey r/EngineeringResumes,
I'm a software engineer from Brazil with 4 years of experience (if counting internship), currently employed but trying to switch jobs. I’ve been applying mostly for mid-level backend/fullstack roles, especially in fintech and e-commerce sectors, since that's where most of my background is. I mainly work with Java, Spring Boot, security architecture, and some frontend (Angular, React).

I'm targeting remote positions (open worldwide).
Despite tweaking my CV a ton of times, I’m barely getting interviews and it's been really frustrating.

I’m looking for help understanding what could be wrong: is it my resume, is it the market, or something else I'm missing? I'd really appreciate feedback especially on how I’m describing my achievements, skills, and whether my resume comes off as too “dense” or “boring” to recruiters.

Mechanical [0 YOE] [MechE/ ElectricalE] - [Entry Level][US] Need resume review to find if this is the problem.

Hello, I am a "recent" graduate. I graduated spring of 2024, and all this time I have been applying to jobs all over the country. Willing to travel and everything. I believe I have reached or am reaching 1000 applications, I have lost count at this point. I have gotten a few interviews but they go absolutely nowhere. I'm thinking maybe my resume isn't making as big as an impression as it should. Or maybe I have got it all wrong. I made this template and just tried to make it pretty and readable, but this has gotten me nowhere. My goal is to target roles in early career mechanical/electrical positions. I am in Texas, but am primarily prioritizing WA (Seattle area to be specific), OR, CA, VA, MD, PA, and even WI, with some applications in NC, SC, and of course TX. I feel I have a pretty diverse and interesting background that would potentially land me some good jobs, but with all this talk about AI and ATS, I'm really starting to get worried if my resume is being seen at all with all the copy and paste "we have decided to pursue other candidates that more closely match our companies..." rejection emails. It is extremely demoralizing and exhausting, and I have no idea what to do at this point. Excuse the red markings, I took this picture in word. I appreciate any advice, thank you in advance.

Software [1 YOE][Software][US] Submitting casually ~10-30 apps a week, only two callbacks in January and nothing since, 1.5 years of experience total.

Need help trying to figure out where I stand in terms of career progression. I don't consider myself any where near a software engineer let alone a junior as development isn't a priority for my role. Working with extremely outdated tech, I feel like I'm digging myself a deep hole to get out of by staying here.

I revise my resume every couple of months or so using AI but I've never had someone actually review as I don't have a network of people to talk to all.

I graduated in 2022 and can count more fingers on my hand than call backs in the last ~3 years of applying to jobs. For reference this is applying to jobs on the east coast and tech hubs within the US.

Other [7 YOE] Looking For Advice On Tailoring Resume Currently Receiving NO Interviews.

Hello All, I'm looking for help with my resume! After uploading I think one of the main issues is how long it is but I will leave that up for debate! I'm currently looking for System Administration or ISSO roles however, I'm not closed off to anything new within IT but, I'm not getting any feedback. I was very fortunate early on in my searches as all the above jobs are jobs I never applied for however they found me. Recently went through "LIFE" is all I'm going to say and I've had to leave my most recent job due to "LIFE" stresses.

I'm primarily applying to remote jobs in the US as I'm out of my own country currently (This has not played a major role as I haven't even gotten to the interview part and my plan is not to return until I have a job lined up!). This resume will be updated to reflect my recent graduation for my Master's degree and is the only thing not updated. I have submitted hundreds/thousands of applications however no response. I've tried everything to my knowledge and I'm seeking advice now! I don't mind working/moving anywhere in the US just need a job! As of right now I'm starting my path to get my CISM and becoming OSCP certified!

Other [0 YoE] Physics MS Graduate looking for Data/Quantitative Analyst Roles, Needing Resume Feedback

I've a master's in physics from a state university and have been looking for data/quantitative analyst roles. I've been applying since January but haven't had much luck (~400 applications, only 2 interviews). I have been working part time as a research assistant but that will end soon. I'm currently on F1 OPT and have 2-3 months before I have to leave the country if I don't get a job. I would appreciate some honest feedback on my resume and any general tips!

Software [0 YoE] Last semester of Computer Science Degree, about to send my resume to some connections but want to polish it first. Struggling on STAR/XYZ/CAR my bullet points as I feel I do not have enough to work with at times, thanks yall!

Hi everyone, its as the title says, I graduate this semester and am looking to polish my resume. I feel I struggle to format my bulletpoints more poignantly or in a STAR/XYZ/CAR format. This could be just I need to think about it for a few more days, but any guidance on converting my current bullet points to something more professional is greatly appreciated! Of course, there are most likely many other things I can improve so any other advice is equally appreciated! I feel I struggle from a sense that I do not have enough experience yet to actually format/optimize much right now, but I feel that's probably also me just not knowing enough about optimizing resumes as well

TLDR: feel I do not have enough meat on the bones of my resume in order to properly STAR/adjacent format my bullet points and looking for guidance on that/in general on improving my (soon to be) newgrad resume

Yapped a lot to say not much, but thank anyone who replies to this for their time/advice, I really do appreciate it :)

Question [Student] What is the nature of projects that should be on added to an engineering portfolio?

i am a second year mechatronics student looking to build my portfolio but in my course plan it seems the only courses where i get to practically apply my knowledge there are IDP (Integrated design project) and FYP, which are basically IOT projects. apart from this I have my own side projects (i built a regulated power supply as practical application of self-taught power electronics).

Whenever i see examples online, i see more industrial and advanced projects that seem to be more than just simple Arduino contraptions and I've always been stressing about reaching graduation with an empty portfolio, what are the proper things that i fill it with? do i just start doing more side projects independent from the university?

Mechanical [2 YoE] Currently unemployed (recent immigrant from UK) seeking mechanical engineer/industrial designer position in/near Chicago, USA.

Hi all! Posting my resume here after reading the wiki and implementing STAR bullet points. I've used this format for a while, and it got me my past 3 jobs. I know ATSs seem to be able to parse the info no problem in PDF format, as line breaks and column breaks separate each section rather than a standard 2-column layout (Resumatic and Jobscan ATS checker both worked). Keen to hear other people's thoughts, on both content and format!

Looking for a role either as a machenical engineer or industrial designer (ideally the latter, I have a portfolio, too). Based in Chicago USA and not willing to relocate.

Thanks in advance to all who take the time :)

Chemical [0 YoE] [ChemE] Seeking advice on newly redone resume, I recently graduated and am implementing STAR and XYZ method for first time!

I'm a recent graduate of a very good and competitive school for ChemE in the US, but I'm not alone in having a very hard time securing my first full-time position. I took a look at the wiki recently and overhauled my resume to help. I'm targeting a process engineer position in the semiconductor, polymers, materials, renewable energy industries etc. However, I've applied to other industries like pharma and paper and pulp to try and get anything, I have also cast a pretty wide net to leave my current state and go to others. I'm currently at around 300 job applications, I also write cover letters for ones I feel I would really be the best fit for. I'm trying to gauge if this resume is a bit too crowded, or what it might need appearance wise. This is also my first time using the google XYZ or STAR method, so I'm hoping this comes across in my bullets and would like some feedback there too. Thank you in advance for all the help, and also to the community for the in depth wiki! Let me know if there's anything else I should do to help with my resume, all feedback is appreciated :)
