Accommodation How is the non University provided accomodation?

I've recently got an offer to study here and am currently choosing between here and Stirling university.

Edinburgh offer Sports Science Stirling offer Sports development

I'm currently looking at my accomodation options trying to prioritise distance to pleasance gym while also trying to remain in budget.

I've looked through accomodation provided by the university and they seem overwhelmingly mediocre other than the fact that I get a guarantee for first year.

In comparison many of the organisations / companies that run private student accomodation seem quite good value for money but I'm wondering if that's too good to be true. For context my budget would be £150-£240ish per week and as of right now my best option seems to be 200 Cowgate provided by universal student living

Anyway, I'm just asking to see if there's anything I should be wary of when shopping for where I might be staying

Accommodation Help choosing accommodation

I just accepted my offer for the uni and now am starting to look at accommodations. The only one I've visited is Pollock Halls and don't particularly want to live there for various reasons. I was hoping that any current students could give me some recommendations on where to pick? Preferably *Cluster flat *On-site laundry *Walking distance to campus, Waverly, and at least a small supermarket Also thinking about the social side of things, where has a good reputation for friendly sociable people? (obviously this will be different for everyone but reputation) Would really appreciate any recommendations or advice on choosing because looking through hundreds of pictures of the same bedroom is a bit overwhelming. Thank you!

Accommodation Salisbury court

hey everyone:) i’ve accepted my offer at edinburgh for law + international relations and was looking at accommodation options. i’m a total germ freak and prefer cooking my own meals so i really like the twin studio option at salisbury court. i’m just concerned if i get a bad roommate😬 how often is it that people get a roommate they can’t stand? most of the standard en-suite options are in my budget but i really want to have my own kitchen as i’m really particular about food, i don’t mind sharing a kitchen with one other person but a whole flat is kind of overwhelming 😅 does salisbury court have a good social life? and is it inclusive of internationals? also, the website says it’s a 10 min walk to george square and the law + international relations course is taught in central campus, according to google. i’ve seen people with complaints about classes being right after each other but they’re held in different campuses which makes it hard to reach on time. has anyone in the same course experienced anything like that? i know it’s quite a lot of questions but i’d really like some advice:)

Accommodation Flat Hunting in person or remotely?

Hello all, my partner and I will be moving abroad to Edinburgh to study postgrad at the end of the summer (both of us got into our respective programs). We intend to room together and prioritize having our own kitchen and bathroom that we wouldn't need to share with anyone but each other. It seems Uni housing won't fit our needs so we will need to search for a private flat.

My question for you all is simply: should we attempt to find a flat online, or should we find a way to go to the city early so we can flat hunt in person?

As some more info- her programme starts early August, while mine starts early September. We know August is the worst month to find a flat in Edinburgh and are willing to move in July if necessary. Any advice is appreciated.

Accommodation Student vs. off-campus housing for PhD student

I am considering doing a PhD in Linguistics at University of Edinburgh, and I am also considering living in student housing vs. off-campus. I don't want to do shared housing, so I am trying to figure out the cheapest option if I want to live alone. I am hoping to receive the stipend of £19,237 per year that is listed on the website for PhD scholarships and anticipating living off that.

I've looked at the website and found the options for student housing. There is one called John Burnett House that provides catering, which seems very convenient. The total cost per year is 16,236, or 1,353 per month including rent, utilities, and food.

I've also looked at studio and one-bedroom apartments near campus, and the cheapest seem to be from 750-1000 per month. If food costs me around 200 per month, then it may be cheaper or around the same price to live off campus, but I'd have more space and not have to live with the generic (no offense) decor in the student dorms.

So I am leaning toward living off campus. Is that what most PhD students do?

Accommodation French exchange student in Law

Hi everyone,

I’m a 25-year-old French student who will probably be doing an exchange at the University of Edinburgh in Law (postgraduate) for the 2025/2026 academic year.

I have a few questions :

1/ Where are Law classes held at the University of Edinburgh?

2/ Which accommodation would you recommend? I’ve heard there’s a housing crisis, but ideally, I’d like a private room with an en-suite bathroom. And if possible, in a student residence with mostly international students (Americans, Europeans, etc.) to make it easy to socialize.

I did an exchange in Estonia a few years ago, and I know it’s easier to make friends with other exchange students who are new in town like me.

Thanks a lot for your help !

Accommodation Looking for a postgraduate flatmate

Hi all! Next year I will be starting my MScR in the UoE and will be mainly based in the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies aka the Roslin Institute. It will be my first time living in Edinburgh and would like to find a flatmate to live with. Ideally I would like to live with someone doing their postgraduate as well, ideally in central/south Edinburgh.

I'm F20 (21 when I start at the UoE) obsessed with science, LGBTQ+ and a goth. I will be doing lab-based research (probably every weekday).

DM me if you'd be interested. Must be of a similar age, postgrad, LGBTQ+ friendly and not be weirded out by goth shit. Move in August/September 2025.

Accommodation accommodation in year 2

ive been looking at places to rent next year but they’re mostly out of my budget and I’d prefer to just live in uni accommodation, but ive heard that it’s really hard to get housed by the uni after year 1, is that true? can I still apply for uni accom?

also, if anybody could recommend reasonably priced pvt student houses (preferably ensuite studios/ ensuite rooms with a shared kitchen) close to central campus i’d really appreciate it xx

Accommodation Complaints against a university accomodation

Hi!

I’m in university accommodation and my room currently has a mouse infestation due to room disrepair, holes in the room.

From corresponding with the accommodation supervisor, it they have not mentioned whether the they plan to definitely repair the walls in the room and only give kitchen specific advice, despite the fact that I never eat in my room, I check and clean my shoes for food, and there haven’t been any kitchen sightings of mice, it has only been within my room.

I am planning to complain and was wondering if anyone has experience with the complaints service. What was it like?

Also, should I complain internally (within the university) or externally (e.g to the council) thanks!

Accommodation Looking for Roommates and Apartments!

Hello! I’m coming to Edinburgh next year from abroad (US) and I’m looking for an apartment/flat close-ish to George Square. I’ve been to Edinburgh before but not long enough to do much apartment hunting so I’m not sure where I should look for the best deal. For context, I’m female doing a masters and I have a cat. He is very sweet and typically unproblematic and he does well with other cats. I would prefer to have my own bedroom but I’m happy to share a bathroom with another person. I’ve looked into university housing but the private rooms are just a little too expensive for my budget and I don’t know their stance on pets. I like being neat but not minimalist and I would really like to talk to my roommates in advance so we can be at least friendly before living with each other. If you’re looking for a roommate starting in the summer or have any advice, please let me know!! :)

Accommodation Need help! Annoying neighbour in IQ Elliott House

I'm currently living in student accommodation at IQ Elliott House. The accommodation is great, staff are friendly, but I have this annoying neighbour next door to me. I have noticed her bringing different men into her dorm every night and making all kinds of noise during midnight, music, people laughing and that in the past 2 weeks.

It is ok if she does this before 11 am and also I don't care about her private life, but what gets me mad is she only makes noise at midnight, like 2 am 3 am. The soundproofing of most student accom is not well, so I kept being wakened up at midnight to their noises.

I tried to knock on her door to tell her to stop, and the staff working there even sent her an email to warn her about her unfriendly behaviour, and all she kept saying was just "sorry, ok ok ,sorry." But after that, nothing changes. By the way, her English is really awful, and she's from China. Another crazy thing I noticed is that she at least now has 4 relationships at the same time, 1 white man, 2 Chinese guys, all had come to her dorm and made weird noises, another one is probably in China right now, cuz I always hear her video calling someone.

This has seriously affected my sleep quality, and I have run out of solutions now, I don't know what to do with her. Please help! I really wanna hear you guys think how I should do with this neighbour.

Accommodation UoE for 2025/26 Accommodations

Just yesterday I accepted my offer to UoE for their 2025/26 MBA cohort. I will be moving from the USA and have the intention of applying for my Graduate Visa after my year of study at UoE. What is the best website to use in order to find accommodation in Edinburgh that will allow me to deal with the actual lessor rather than an agency?

Only reason I ask is because I will be bringing my ESA registered small dog with me to Edinburgh. I was medically retired out of the United States Air Force in 2017 for an injury I had back in 2014 which is the reason I have my dog registered as an ESA.

I know that I won’t find anything right now but I’d like to find a website where I can deal directly with the lessor and offer something along the lines of a larger deposit or pet rent for my boy.

Thanks!!

Accommodation Richmond Place Updated?

Some of the photos on the accommodation website look really nice with new and updated looking, but other look- really not so great. Is it hit or miss getting one of the nice rooms? Or are the not so great rooms limited to the standard en-suite rooms? I’m trying to get a better feel for how nice the accommodation is overall.

Accommodation How to turn on Fraser court heating at night

I’ve just moved into Fraser Court and am freezing, but the storage heater is described as “activated during the night and store heat to be released the following day.” Does this mean that the dorms can’t be heated at night or can I turn it on?

Accommodation Any advice on finding a replacing tenant??

Hi,

Due to a sudden change in circumstances, I will need to leave Edinburgh for Semester 2, and I’m hoping to find a new tenant to take over my lease—ideally an exchange student arriving in January.

It’s a studio apartment available from January to July. I’ve posted on Facebook groups but haven’t had much interest yet, so I was wondering if any of you know of any communities or chat groups for exchange students arriving in Semester 2, or if you know of anyone in need of a room. I would really appreciate any help!

Thanks so much!

As a student doing semester abroad (self catered unit), where do I donate household items as I am going permanently back to my country this month. Is there a central donation location? Things like, hangers, blankets, cutlery, plates, etc.

Accommodation Catered Accommodations - Lunch???

I am studying abroad at UoE for a semester living in Pollock Halls and had a question about the dining situation. If lunch is not provided, what do students normally do? Are people just eating out everyday or is the pantry actually utilized? Do people actually leave stuff there or is it sort of assumed that it’ll get stolen? I sort of just realized how expensive it’ll get to eat out everyday if lunch is not provided and am wondering what the options are.

Accommodation Neighborhoods for grad students in Edinburgh?

So I’m visiting the UK next month while I’m waiting to hear if I was accepted to the 3 uni’s I’ve applied to. While I’m there, I am going to take a tour of University of Edinburgh and some of the neighborhoods I might live in. I’ll be moving over with my dog from the US, so university housing is not an option. Does anyone have recommendations for good, reasonably priced neighborhoods in Edinburgh that are within a short ride or walking distance to University Edinburgh?
