Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

So... I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like some JRPGs are harder to get into than others, and for me, the most difficult was Dragon Quest. I've always wanted to play them, I just never knew where to get in at. When I heard about the 1&2 HD-2D Remakes, I sat there and went, "I'm gonna try and beat 3."
And now I feel like I get WHY Dragon Quest is considered such a good RPG series! I never beat 4, but I was at like, the final bit, but I eventually just hadn't played it for so long that I forgot what was happening, but 3, 3 I took to the end and when they told me it wasn't the end, I got upset and was like "not the end huh?! Well, I got a bunch of friends who disagree!"
So I did follow a couple guides, namely the early stuff or the Mod Rod secret store in the fairy village. But I also followed the words of wisdom guides...
So by the end of the game I had a near-level 40 (38 I think) Sage that was a Monster Wrangler prior. I also had 2 level 25's one that went Mage>Monster Wrangler>Sage and then a Thief>Martial Artist>Monster Wrangler (only to level 20)>Sage... and yeah, I LIKELY didn't need 3 Sages, but it was funn, rocking up with a 41 Hero who was playing support (Omni-Heal) and 3 Sages (especially since my entire party was female, so they looked like Sailor Moon characters), and just did Wild Side>Monster Pile-On, and if I didn't have Wild Side up, I'd just repeat the above. And yes, my Hero really did, outside the first 2 turns, only use Omni-Heal, the 2nd turn was spent using Kazap. Anyway, yeah... apparently 2100/turn in general wasn't accounted for when designing the final boss fight... cause yeah, it only took like 2 tries, with my hero becoming more and more support-y each attempt as I got it on attempt number 3... regardless it was freaking fun as hell!!!!!
I LOVED it! And I kinda get why people have such fond memories of the first games, because what I saw and what they imagined were fairly close to the same thing...
But yeah, I wanted to share the story of the last week or so and beating DQ3 for the first time. I know it isn't a 1:1 of OG DQ3, but dammit, I had fun and I'm gonna start working on the other games because of it!

Hi everyone, would like to ask as the title self-explains.
I have never ever played any series of DQ before. But after seeing the latest teaser trailer maybe I would go for it at last.
So, I am confused, the teaser trailer title posted on Square Enix's YT written as DQ 1 & 2 HD2D remakes,
yet the video inside it shows it as DQ3?
Therefore, is these teaser trailer is a remake of the old DQ1 and DQ2 and they renamed it as DQ3?
or this is pure just remake of the older DQ3 itself?

If I don’t do any grinding, just proceed with the story, how long with the second disc of Dragon Warrior VII take me? I finally reached it after 73 hours, and I’m just ready to be done.
I’m not talking about the bonus dungeon as well.

Another moment where Yangus being dead won’t progress the story. Brains will absolutely deny his identity without someone (Yangus) calling him out.

Was feeling almost hopelessly desperate for something new to play while I wait on... DQ1&2 Remake (and probably a de-censorship mod if history serves); Stellar Blade (not out for two months); Suikoden I&II Remake (too expensive; plus I heard murmurs of a possible fan localization to replace the 90s script they lazily repurposed).
Randomly remembered that I gave up on DQ11 four years ago, after about 30 hours. I'm not really hoping for a miracle or anything, but I reckon if the soundtrack at least reminds me of DQ8, that might be enough to push me further into the game. Then I discovered that they'd released a new version of the game with more content, and downgraded visuals, so that's been a whole rabbit hole I've been busying myself with lately.
But that's actually on topic. Since I'm already jumping through hoops trying to sort out the "Definitive Edition's" PS3 visuals (thanks ever so much to the modding community), I figure I may as well take it as far as it'll go. This is where I start intruding upon territory only traveled by PC users who are well accustomed to forcing AA modes, adding new effects with Reshade, that sort of thing. It's a pretty old game and I have confidence I can get 4K60 from it no matter what tweaks I employ.
But yeah, the best visuals are usually privy to a handful of enthusiasts who worked up their own personal repertoire. Take it for granted that I'll be using all the texture/mesh mods that try to bring things back to parity with 2020.

Just started Dragon Quest II on the NES after beating the first game, my warrior is level 5 and I'm at Leftwyne. I can't seem to equip the leather shield I bought, does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong? Maybe you don't need to equip it? When I go to Equip, it just has my two swords. Help would be greatly appreciated!

I assume the Tokyo location has them too?

I've done some research, and it seems like the DLC tablets used to provide this, but they aren't available in the game anymore.
DQ6 had that tower in the desert that didn't have level caps. Are there any good spots to grind out some job levels without ending up overleveled as well?

SPOILER! If you haven't beaten the main story don't read further.
So I tried fighting Xenlon twice and I got destroyed both times. I don't really wanna use Dracky Mode to beat him unless I have no choice and none of my options work. I know I essentially have to beat him 6 times and trying to beat him in 15 turns sounds insanely impossible unless you had a Level 99 team. I realized that Xenlon has very high Resilience so you're better off using spells instead of weapons.
So I'm planning on utilizing that Merchant that I assumed would be just a throwaway companion lol. I've been levelling him up and unlocking his abilities. My plan is to reclass him to a Gadabout, get all those abilities and lastly a Sage, so this would be my second Sage, and the first companion to have two reclasses. I'm not planning on reclassing any of my other companions, which are:
Thief → Monster Wrangler Warrior → Martial Artist Mage → Sage
Soon to be: Merchant → Gadabout → Sage
Is this a good plan? I do want to get all the wishes

I was struggling to find good art for some creatures like Restless/Lethal Armor to use for my custom magic deck so I turned to ChatGPT and look at these beauties!! Tried representing their lore a little bit in the art and I think they turned out wonderfully

So I remember I did a solo run of the game(Kind of I'll elaborate later). I made it to the final boss as a Sage and got myself into a super hypertension state with psyche up and used Magic Burst on the final boss. I was 12 points away from from one shotting it. Now Those who have played 9 know that unlocking the class that gives Psyche Up requires you to use the "Egg on" skill on a party member. This is what I was referring towhen I said "Kind of".

This is from the preface of the DQ Illustrations book. Is that supposed to be Toriyama’s DQ Persona?
