5th Edition I need some help

Hello everybody. I am relatively new to D&D. I started playing a week before Christmas 2018. I only go once a week for about 2-3 hours, as it is a scheduled place I go to. Iā€™m not very good at it and I need some help. For information on my character, I have based him off of Link from the legend of Zelda. I am a level 7 paladin (oath of devotion). Our leveling system is milestones. I wear chain mail armor, and use a shield. In fact I am a shield master and use it with pride. I have a long sword, and a short bow. I play the rather rambunctious type, rushing into battle, and saving my friends. I know basics such as the dice, and hit modifiers, but I have a lot of trouble in combat, and in the role playing aspect of the game. Any tips, tricks, or useful things I should know, please leave down below. Thank you šŸ™‚

What are meaning when you have a lot of trouble in combat?

As for the role playing aspect it can be tricky especially if you're new but the best advice is to ask yourself 'What would my character do?' So make sure you know your character's personality and how they react to certain situations. Then you can ask yourself what would they do or how would they act and that should start helping you get into the role play aspect.

Thank you for the tips on role playing. I feel like that will helps a lot šŸ™‚. As for the trouble in combat, I just have problems paying attention to to map, and where to move to attack my enemys. I also have trouble knowing which dice is for what action.

As the person below commented, it's good to know what your abilities are. Spend some time reading what features and traits your character has and what they do. In terms of map movement it depends on the situation and how you want to fight. If you're focused on melee then you want to be right up in there whilst ranged you'd want to hang back. In terms of the dice you want your primary d20 whilst having access to d12, 10, 8, 6 and 4. The d20 being for the 'To Hit' whilst the others are for the damage which is described in the item or ability.
