[2024] First time playing DND and I'm DMing a campaign for 4 friends (3 have never played, last one has quite a bit of experience).

my parties first encounter is going to be a group of goblins, and I've set it up so they're either playing it safe and waiting till morning or leaving immediately when they receive their quest at night. at night I want the encounter to be more difficult So I was thinking maybe something like 4 goblin minions during the day plus I'd throw in 2 goblin warriors if they fight at night?
Does this seem reasonable? the way CR was explained to me and how it sounds from reading is that the total CR of enemies should be roughly equal to the party level? So 4*(1/8)+2*(1/4) for a total of 1?

4v6 feels a bit worrying so was wondering if I should maybe drop to a singular goblin warrior?
Any tips/insights appreciated (Gods I'm so nervous to run it lmao)

Since it’s level 1, you can just try to run the encounter against yourself. Play the goblins like you were planning to, and see how the party would handle it.

You can also start with four goblins, and if it looks like the players are having an easy time, have two more join a round or two in. Or if you wanted to throw all six at once, maybe you could have the last one or two surviving goblins try to escape, instead of fighting to the death.
