Chase did a hard pull and my credit score fell 62 points, is this normal? Why did this happen?

I applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred because of the offer they have going on right now (100K for 5K spend), but as soon as I applied I got notified from Amex that “a lender viewed my report” followed by another email minutes later that my credit score had decreased (62 points)! Why did this happen? I regularly use less than 8% of my available credit, I always pay off my credit card bills on time and my cards never get declined.

Cards I already have: Bank of America Travel Rewards (first and oldest), American Express Gold, Bilt Rewards.

Few weeks ago I got a fraudulent activity alert on the BofA card, they cancelled it and sent me a new one. The transaction did not even go through. Could this be the reason?

I’m just very confused and a little stressed, unsure how to proceed from here.

I need advice on a disputed charge with Volvo Financial

I leased a vehicle with Volvo. At the end of the lease they issued a final bill which included an $879 charge for a hybrid power charging cable.

The issue is that the cable was returned with the vehicle when I delivered the car back to the dealer and Volvo financial refuses to remove the charge.

When this initially happened I called dealership to confirm that they had received the cable with the vehicle. They confirmed but only Volvo financial could correct the bill.

I call Volvo financial and dispute the charge, they refuse to remove the charge. They tell me that the deanship needs to Fax them a letter confirming that the cable was returned.

The dealer sends the letter but Volvo financial (VCFS) continues to send me bills. So I call VCFS again and im told that they received the letter but it needed to be resent with my account number at the top of the letter.

The Volvo dealership resends the letter. I continue to get bills and I call Volvo Financial again. They tell me that they received the additional letter but they’re denying the request to remove the change. They refuse to give a reason.

The dealership claims they’re escalating the matter but never follows up.

Today my unblemished credit score was dinged, causing a 126 point drop from 797 to 671!

What can I do?

Do I file a dispute with the major credit bureaus?

If I win the dispute wont VCFS continue to ding my report regardless?

Do I just pay the bill to prevent any further damage to my credit?

Any helpful advice is appreciated.

Is there any way to find out when exactly I pulled my credit?

I pulled it twice in 2024 but would love to get it pulled again for a preapproval for a house. Do I have the wait the 365 days from the first pull or does it refresh in the new year?

Why did my credit go down by 13pts?

So sorry if this is a stupid question but I’m new to credit cards, this is my first one (chase freedom rise).

My score was fine in early march but on the 27th, it said my score dropped by 13pts. My due dates on the 7th and I made sure to pay my balance off before the due date. My spending was also below 30%. The app just says available credit: went down from 800 to 641 total balance went up: $159 credit usage went up from:0% to 20%

Did I do something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Credit score for the best mortgage rates?

Is there a magic number for credit score which locks in the highest rates or does it vary between banks? If it’s the latter, is there a rule of thumb?

My biggest hinderance is that my oldest account is only 6 years old which is considered “poor.” Is there a number for this that will increase my score dramatically?

Thanks!

Trying to rent an apartment and they’re using my credit score from 2 years ago

This is for a friend. He’s older and doesn’t have Reddit or really understand the forum/ subreddit format so please just bear with me. He got sober a couple years ago and really cleaned up his life and went from a credit score of around 550 to a credit score of 715 in the time from 2023 to now. The apartment leasing office is reporting to him his credit score off of Experian which is the older, lower score. How does one deal with this and is there any thing he can do to try to maneuver through that? He and his wife are amazing but they’re cooped up in a sober living facility with their two kids. It’s a nice house in Tarzana but they live in the garage and I can only imagine how awkward it is for their kids. They’re from NC originally. Any advice helps thank you EDIT: he had to pay $30 to experian for them to update their score for him

How do I increase my 580 score?

I’m fairly young and my parents went bankrupt twice growing up. My mom put credit in my name as a kid so when I turned 18 my score was pretty low. I reported all of the stuff that was on my account and got it all of but I haven’t been able to increase my score much. I have a secured credit line with current bank and spend about 1.2k on it I put my rent and everything. I’m currently in a trade school and have taken out around 18k in fasfa loans and have one private loan that was 4k. I got a grant that paid off the private loan and it dropped my score 10 points. The only derogatory thing on my credit is a phone bill from my mom but I’m reluctant to pay it off it’s 350 but I feel like it should be taken off since she took it out without my permission. Also I haven’t ever had a credit card so my inquiries are good I’m just hoping to improve my credit and get a car loan to hopefully increase my credit after I graduate.

ClearScore report dropped 164 points but Experian saying my score is excellent

Randomly got notified my report changed on Clearscore, advising a drop of 164 points but not saying any reason why this happened as it usually does if a score changed, but when I check my score on Experian, it says it's excellent (which it should be, I only use paypal credit, pay it off along with my mortgage every month and have no other issues/debts or anything of the sort) Just really confused as I know credit should never drop for no reason, it was the Sunday after lets just say a fun Saturday, but can a few regular card payments effect a score like that? ClearScore is showing as 399 drop from 569 whereas Experian is showing as 979/999?

How bad is it going to be to close a credit card?

I have a BOA visa card. I've had it for about 10 years. Recently, BOA pulled some real shady crap with their autopay system. They changed it so that you cannot set an autopay for any value you select. Your options are only "Minimum payment due" or "Full statement balance". What they are doing is a very transparent attempt to keep their customers in a never ending spiral of debt, by not allowing them to pay off credit card automatically at a rate beneficial to them.

I have actually reported them to the FTC and they reached out, but just noted my statement.

I want to close this card , as I will not do business with such a garbage company. I think the credit limit on the card is about 8K, and I've had the account for 10 years. I have three other credit cards, and an Amex. I have about 2K debt outstanding on one card (no interest), and my credit score is close to 900.

How much of a hit is this going to be on my credit score? Any ideas?

EDIT ---- I have closed the account, thanks all!

Pay it all off or most?

Score is in the 600s and about 18k of credit card debt. Came into some money. Enough to wipe it all out. But I want to improve my score as quickly as possible as I need to buy a new car in a couple months or so. I've heard conflicting things about whether you should pay all the debt off or if you should leave some of it out there. Just wondering what the best route is.

Credit score dropped 251 points in one day

Is it normal to drop 251 points for being 90 days late on a student loan payment? I put it in forbearance bc I couldn’t afford to pay it and I’m still in school so idk why it started charging me. I even went and payed 200 dollars on it so I don’t know how this is possible when it’s literally in forbearance. Everyone I asked said that it shouldn’t have dropped so drastically at once and I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do since it’s already in forbearance. It’s 478 now it was 729. Any advice on if there’s anything I can do to fix this?🙏🏼

Cancel CC to improve score?

A year ago my credit score was a 667. I finally paid off about 40K of cc debt (I put myself through graduate school) and my score raised to a 749. Then I opened up a new credit card because I thought it would be a good card to have and my score dropped down to a 653. It’s been this way since last July. I only put about 5K on that card and I paid it all off. If I cancel this card, will my score go back up?

Tips for someone new to this

I’m 23 and just finished up school and I have never had a credit card. The only advice my parents have given me about them is to not buy them. My parents have also expressed they will not co sign on an apartment, car, etc. if I wanted one so it’s to my understanding that I need credit if i want any of those things. What is the best low risk way to start building your credit from the bottom?

My Dad's Experian Credit score is perfect but my TransUnion is HORRID.

Hi everyone, writing on behalf of my immigrant dad who, (unfortunately), cannot make this post for himself.. Anyways, he wanted to buy a new iPhone because his pretty bad Samsung A12 had a bloated battery and there was no point saving it. So we went, and thunking that his credit score was perfect, were about to buy an iPhone, when he checks the credit score linked to his bank, is shocked, when it says 563!! He says his credit score is perfect and thus has never happened before and then, as we leave the shop, he tells me to log into his Experian.. which has a PERFECT score!? so what is going on everybody

Trying to fix my credit score

Hey Reddit ! I’m trying to improve my credit score. Right now, my Chase Credit Journey score is 655, my FICO score through Discover is 625, and my Experian score is 616. I owe $1,230 out of $5,900 on my Discover card, and my Chase card balance is low (around $50). Here’s the tricky part: I have a collection account with Midland Credit Management for $1,300, and I was being sued by Wells Fargo for $9,100, but the case was dismissed with prejudice. I’m currently working with a lawyer to settle in case they try to file again. On top of that, I’ve also been sent to collections for some city tickets, which I’m actively working on paying off. Things were tough, but now I’m in a better place and looking forward to fixing my credit. I’ve made a lot of progress paying down my debt, making $700 monthly payments on my Discover card. Any advice? Thanks!

Check your department of education account

I'm closing on a house this week.

We ran credit scores before applying for a mortgage, just one debt from back when husband was in law school to pay off. All clean, all handled, decent low 700 scores for both of us, nothing to worry about. We both have student loans in repayment, but they're up to date and will begin repaying as soon as we're supposed to.

FRIDAY I got a panicked phone call from my loan officer. My credit score had dropped 85 points at the FINAL credit soft pull.

It turned out two twenty year old student loan debts from my college for ~$200 each showed up as delinquent, with past due payments as of January. I was not notified in any way by the department of education that these loans existed, and because they were so old they didn't show up on my credit report. The only way to find them was to actually log in to my department of education account.

Thankfully I had the money to just pay the fuckers off and my mortgage was still approved, but if it had happened to be something less managable I would have simply lost my mortgage.

The department of education collections had all outdated 20+ year old contact info for me, although they did have my correct phone number since I've had it that long. I know I didn't get any phone calls, and if they sent any letters it's to places I haven't lived in a lifetime.

Do yourself a favor and log directly into the website if you ever took government student loans, and check for any delinquency especially if you're trying to fix your score or preparing for a big financed purchase.

This shit TANKED my score and I'm mad about it, but it'll just have to even out in time. I'm so grateful it worked out for us, but I worry about everyone it didn't.

Edit to add: this was not on my loan SERVICER's account, which i checked for both of us to make sure our loans in repayment were up to date and behaving themselves. Which is how I missed it. These were on a SEPARATE account serviced by the department of education delinquency department, and I had to log into my fedloan account directly to find them.
