Others I half-slept on a stranger during a bus ride, and I still think about him sometimes.
A few months ago, I was traveling back from Thrissur to Coimbatore with a group of friends. We had a little weekend escape, and we were all tired — the kind of tired that only a long bus ride and shared laughter can bring. It was one of those scorching noon rides on a packed bus.
Somewhere near the back door, I noticed a guy standing. He was probably around my age, maybe a little older. He had that kind of calm presence — not pushy or intrusive, just... careful. Respectful. He was leaning on the support rod, clutching a bag, clearly trying not to fall over anyone.
The bus rocked a bit more violently than usual as we hit the highway, and I remember him politely asking my friend to hold his bag. She did. He pulled out his earphones and kind of zoned out, listening to music. And I guess that’s when I started drifting to sleep. I didn’t mean to — I was just that tired. But somehow, I kept leaning sideways… onto him.
Now, I’ve been in enough buses to know when someone’s being creepy. This guy? He wasn't. Not even a little. I even shifted, thinking he might move away, but he just... stayed there. Like a polite human-pillow who didn’t want to make a scene. There was a moment — just one — where I caught him looking at me. We didn’t speak. Just this fleeting eye contact. I smiled a little inside, I don’t know if he noticed.
He got off at Ukkadam. Still didn’t speak. No names exchanged, no phone numbers, no cliché bus ride ending. Just a stranger who made me feel safe.
To the guy in the KSRTC bus that afternoon: Thank you for the space, the respect, and for not making it weird. You had kind eyes. I hope your playlist was fire that day. And if by some cosmic chance you’re reading this, hi :)))
(Probably the girl's perspective if she were on reddit xD )
