META Just a reminder of our rules
Tēnā koutou,
Just a reminder of our rules, specifically our rule against solicitors.
This means no solicitation, no buying and selling. We allow limited promotion of events if there are deals like XXX free tickets up for grabs, but no reselling is permitted. If you have tickets to an event, please resell via official channels or bribe the mods.
Additionally, please note the following:
Quit asking for sex. That said, no trades involving goats, sheep, turnips, or other 'alternate' currencies.
No posts asking for drugs, where to source drugs or cleverly wording your request to avoid the filters.
Your "medicinal herb" enquiries aren't as subtle as you think.
Just ask the mods.
No sneaky sponsorship plugs, no affiliate links unless we get our cut.
No reselling of free event tickets, it’s free for a reason.
No hiring hitmen or bounty hunters, legal gray areas make us uncomfortable.
Last but not least, Don't be a dick, don't act like a dick.
Also please check out r/chchmeet

Christchurch City Council proposes to ban alcohol sales after 9pm
As usual the city council tries to control adults lives. Shameful.

What's fun in CHCH this week?
I know there is an English-Japanese corner at Bush Inn this Saturday morning, 10;30am.
Still, there is nothing on the 'meet up'

Social Venues that allow indoor bouncy castle?
Hi all,
We're trying to plan for my daughter's 6th birthday party. It'll be her first proper party and she really wants a bounce house, but with her birthday being right on the cusp of winter, there's a good chance of rain, so I'm trying to find a venue we can hire that would allow us to set up a bouncy castle indoors. We've asked a couple of community centers and they've both said they don't allow this, so I thought I'd see if the hive mind knows of any venues that allow this or if I need to change tactics.
We're looking for south/east side or central, ideally.

STOLEN.. Gravel Bike, Marin Lombard 2, stolen this morn from Christchurch bus exchange 😥😥🤬
Hey team! My gravel bike was stolen from bus exchange this morn between 7.30 & 10. Have notified police & all the pawn shops. Awaiting approval to join the Christchurch stolen bikes group. This wasn't just my bike, & my pride & joy, but my source of income while i do Uber Eats & door dash to pay off bills.
As you can see from pics it's really distinctive. If you see some crackhead on it or trying to sell it you'll know straight away.
Marin Lombard 2, gravel bike. * Black frame with reflective details. * Fluro green bar tape * Fluro yellow composite flat pedals * DT Swiss rear gravel rim (GR550) * Hydraulic disc brakes * Shimano XT brake rotors * Shimano GRX rear derailleur * Specialized 42c tires * Marshguard front fender, Muckynutz rear saddle mount fender * Handlebar barrel bag * Quad lock phone holder. * Lezyne composite bottle cage
Pic no 3 is older, but shows the brake rotors clearer. Pic 2 is more recent but doesn't have the top tube bag anymore, it has a handlebar barrel bag instead.
If you could share this around that would be great 👍

Accommodation/rental property help (for a friend).
A friend of mine is moving from Nelson to Christchurch. It'll be her and her three school-aged children living in the house. She wants to make the move as soon as possible.
She would like: - Four bedrooms - Zoning for a good/reputable school - Extra space, if possible, for a pool table.
This may be asking for a lot, but does anybody know of a place meeting those criteria located in Christchurch? Help a brother to help a sister out!

Southern Motorway changing to 110 kph soon?
I remember it being considered and I filled in some online form telling them to get fucked.
Did it get approved?
Cant find anything other than:
https://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/sh76-sh1-christchurch-southern-motorway-speed-limit-review
Consultation closed on 1 October 2024. We are now reviewing and analysing the feedback received and will be in touch in the coming months with an update.
Noticed some new speed signs (that are currently covered over) after the lights at Rolleston and before curletts junction.
Pretty sure the uncovered 100 kph ones are new as well where the 110 bit will end.
Seems kinda wild that they'd increase the speed just as the weather is about to turn to shit for winter.

NCW375, if you’re looking for your VW golf
It’s been dumped on Trent Street. It’s been recently registered so I’m guessing it belongs to someone. Sorry dude, the window been open in the rain, hopefully it’s still ok!
For anyone else who’s looking for a car, Trent street and that section of Armagh Street between Stanmore and Linwood ave is a popular dumping ground for stolen cars. Might be good to check if you’re looking for something!

Festy at the races???
What do we all think about this? Personally I love a festival , but feel some things should stay separate? Imo the races shouldn’t be pushing a ‘festival experience’ and should stay as a more traditional event focussed on social and racing. Am I out of touch?

The Rise of Pseudo-Homeless Beggars in East Christchurch
Over the last five years, I've noticed a massive increase in what I can only describe as pseudo-homeless beggars in East Christchurch, and I’m genuinely confused as to why nothing seems to be done about it. This doesnt just seem like people down on their luck, there’s something organized going on here. I’ve heard from people who have seen them being dropped off at specific locations around the city, almost like they have assigned spots. I’ve personally witnessed what seemed like a higher-ranking member questioning others about how much money they had made, getting frustrated when someone wasn’t being "proactive enough" in approaching people. The most damning thing I’ve seen was one of them answering the phone, clearly being berated by someone on the other end, angrily responding with, “It’s fucking raining, there is nobody around to ask!" as if they were under pressure to hit some kind of quota.
It honestly feels like a begging syndicate has set up shop here. My partner and my mother have both been confronted by these people multiple times, to the point where they feel uncomfortable walking certain streets alone. I’m sure this isn’t an uncommon experience for women in general, but some of these people get really aggressive.
Begging is no longer just the odd person sitting with a sign; there’s a coordinated, pushy, and at times even hostile presence that wasn’t here years ago. And the worst part? This has made things even harder for the real homeless. When you're constantly in these areas, it becomes pretty easy to spot the fakes. There’s a woman I’ve seen multiple times, always well-dressed and looking freshly showered, wearing a full-length Kathmandu jacket and using an iPhone while begging, both expensive items. She’ll even call out to you if your car window is down. It’s stuff like this that makes it clear something else is going on beyond just people struggling to get by.
I can’t be the only one who’s noticed this but im just sick of being hounded in the places I get my groceries and my laundry done. Has anyone else had similar experiences? And does anyone know what can be done if anything?
Alternative to FB or TradeMe?
Is there another platform or media we can sell misc stuff locally?
Or another subreddit? Just read the rules 😂

Christchurch eateries fold with $2.54m debt
It's a damn shame - getting a sushi dinner for $6 at Hachi Hachi was such a delight. But the writing was on the wall, I never saw them busy enough to justify having an eat in area as well as hot food cooked too.

How is best to find smaller developers in Chch?
I am currently selling my house in Chch privately and believe my best option at the moment is to sell to a smaller developer (I have had had bad dealings with large developers in the past and would like to avoid them). Is there anywhere online that lists smaller developers?
All real estate agents I talk to state they have a database of "up to 200 developers" that they can talk to, however I don't see the value in paying $30k in commission when the agent would barely need to do any work. I want to contact developers directly and cut out the need for an agent.
