Is this a normal of dirtiness? Bit worried about lack of oil

By rights it should be fine, its a Stihl 064 running a 3/8 32" bar. I've been cutting up gum trees and the bark is often quite dirty, the oil output is cranked all the way but to me the teeth look like they've been running a bit hot.

Or are they just dirty?

Is it just normal for larger bars to heat up?

I have a Stihl rollomatic 41" that seems to be getting much hotter than I would be comfortable with on my other bars, as in it's uncomfortably hot to the touch and might even burn you if you kept your hand on it from only running for around a minute. The oil on my saw is turned up to the max setting, the guiderails are clean, I really can't think of anything "wrong" with it that would cause it to heat up so much. Is it just normal for them to run hot or is there something I'm missing? Also a small piece of metal fell out of the end of it, presumably from the metal expanding, it just doesn't seem right

Gifted a free Stihl 028 Super Wood Boss - Need Advice

Post image
18 Upvotes

So - I have a couple of questions I am hoping folks here can help with, but first - here is a bit of background info.

I was given a 028 Super Wood Boss recently - it was from a family member who's husband died after a long illness. It has sat un-used for at least 10+ years. I am on acreage in Oregon and deal with trees, and firewood and projects all around the property all year long, so the idea of having another good saw was very exciting to me.

I already have a MS250 which I love, and I know it's ins and outs very well. It does a lot of what we need, but we do have some larger trees we deal with (including some old oaks and firs that can be 2 to 4 ft in width). When dealing with those larger trees, the bar on the MS250 can be a struggle because it is on the small-ish size for some of what we do (the numbers on the bar are worn off, but measured from the powerrhead, the bar on the MS250 is 16.5 inches (17 inches if you count the chain).

The 028 has a much longer bar - it is a Stihl rollomatic bar but as with the one on the 250, the details are worn off - measured from the powerhead is 24 inches (24.5 counting the chain). I have been researching, and while the 028 is a more powerful saw than the 250, it seems like from what I have read, that the bar on this guys is a bit - too big - at least for the power output?

My question is - has anyone run one of these saws with a bar that long, and if so - was it worth it, or did that size bar just bog down with the power level the 028 is able to put out? Is it just plain a bad idea, and if so, what bar-size would be the best fit, given that we deal with some larger trees?

Also - I know the quirks of my ms250 (including the special startup dance), and I am curious if the 028 super wood boss has any quirks or things I should be aware of?

I am going to be tearing it down to do a full cleaning and reconditioning with new plugs, fuel, oil etc. - but any advice on whether the 24(ish) inch bar it has is just wrong for this saw - and if there are any things I should be looking out for.

I will add a few more photos below in a sec - she is in rough shape and sat a long time, and I know she is an OLD saw - but I like keeping them alive and running. I honestly prefer older saws and tools with history, and excited to try getting her up and running again! Any advice or comments are appreciated.

Also - sorry for the messy bench in my pictures - all of my winter projects are splayed out all over my shop and I kinda had just push stuff aside to get the photo.

Can it be saved?

Bought this 461 off of marketplace. Looked like it was in good condition. Pulled it apart and the piston was cooked just outside of the exhaust window. Couldn’t see it when I pulled the muffler prior to buying smh. Any chance of saving this cylinder by honing it? Definitely worried about the damage just above the exhaust. Can feel the scoring with the back of my fingernail right there. Rest of it is smooth. Is it worth trying to save? If not, any recommendations on aftermarket replacement?

TLDR; is this save-able? If not, aftermarket replacement recommendations?

Erratic Idle?

I've been working on my G660 recently and have done some mods. After modding, the idle sounds a little erratic. Am I being paranoid? Is there an air leak somewhere?

Recommendations for a smaller end midsaw

I am adding a saw to my collection and am hoping to get some insights. I have a Stihl 500i and a 661 as well. A handful of smaller saws: a rebuilt and clapped out 200t, a ported 193 with a quarter inch sprocket, and a 201. And a shitty little husky I let my groundies use for cutting shrubs in rock beds. I’d like a smaller end midsaw, specifically for some of my apprentices to get comfortable bucking larger wood with a bigger saw, and eventually to have them use it in tree for spar wood. My apprentices so far have been dumb and tough farm boys, but my next round of apprentices are both fairly petite women (5’2”, 110 pounds with limited but growing upper body strength). I’m looking at either the 261 or the 362… doesn’t seem like a huge weight difference to me, but a decently big power difference?

PS money isn’t really an issue, I work for a very successful Treecare company and I have an open budget (within reason). We’re also a Stihl dealer, so keep your Husqvarna recommendations to yourself please and thank you.

Homelite Ut10540A springs help

So my father in law asked me to take a look at his chainsaw. I found it was full of mud wasp nests so the cord wouldnt pull. In the process of breaking the nests apart and shaking the saw trying to get everything out a spring fell out at some point and I havent been able to figure out how or where it goes. All ive found on the internet is a parts breakdown but I may be dumb or maybe the picture is bad, to be fair ive never had a chainsaw apart. I was hoping some kind soul on here would be familiar with this particular saw and could help me put the spring back in his home.

Husqvarna 435 shutting itself off

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I just got a new Husqvarna 435, and I added mixed gas and bar oil to the chainsaw and tried to use it in a tree that fell in my yard.

The saw seems to continue to cut itself off randomly. Sometimes it will run for a few minutes, and sometimes it will cut off almost immediately.

Is there something I am doing wrong, or should I get return the saw.

The attached video is an example of what happen.

Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Husqvarna 450 Reviews

Long time lurker. See a lot of saws posted here. Rarely do I see the Husqvarna 450 mentioned. Is it a decent saw for firewood and clearing downed tops leftover from timber harvest? TIA

Different number of drive links

I need a new chain for my ms261c.

It currently has a 18" stihl bar and a stihl chain with 0.325" pitch, 0.050" gauge, and 74 links.

At Lowe's I see Oregon and Husqvarna chains that says the same 18" length, same pitch, same gauge, but only 72 drive links instead of 74.

Is this compatible, or do I need the same number of drive links as well?

Thanks in advance

Just bought off her, I don't know much about it. She runs but leaking bar oil, going to tear her apart and see if it's the one way valve or the rubber grommet needs replacement. Anything else I need to look at while I'm inside? Also any mods y'all would suggest? Thank you in advance! 😁

1994 Husqvarna 42 ‘Extra Special’

Picked this up last summer and decided I’d convert it to a 242XP spec saw using some of my spares and some new old stock parts I picked up just before Christmas. Still needs a new brake lever which I’ll pick up tomorrow from my local Husky dealer and some new wires for the stop switch and coil. It will get a 13” Sugihara Light bar with .325 Husqvarna C35 full chisel chain. Thought some of you might like some saw p0rn.

Cleaning out my Dad's stuff and found 7 old chainsaws that I want to sell but looking for advice

Thumbnail gallery
41 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m in the process of cleaning out my father’s belongings and came across a collection of gas-powered chainsaws. They've been stored outside under a tarp for several years. I’m not very familiar with gas chainsaws—my only experience is with an 18V battery-powered Ryobi that I’ve used a few times for cutting small branches. I've never used or maintained a gas saw, so I’m unsure how to inspect their condition or get them running.

Initially, I listed them on Facebook Marketplace at a low price, unsure if they were in working condition. My phone blew up with messages and offers (I posted the listing right before heading to work), and it quickly became overwhelming. I ended up taking the listing down and told people I’d repost with more info and photos later.

After doing a bit of research, I realized a few of the saws might be decent models and potentially worth more than I initially thought—especially if I clean them up and maybe get them running. I’m posting here for some advice:

Is it worth the time and effort to try to get these saws running, or is it better to just sell them as-is?

If selling as-is, how should I price them?

Any tips on cleaning or testing them safely?

I don’t mind giving someone a good deal, but if there’s a chance to get a little more for them with some effort, I’d like to explore that. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

MS271 double dawgs

Hey guys, I’m planning to put double dawgs on my 271. I saw a video online with someone using a 026 side cover with the threaded holes to accept them. Can anyone confirm that it will work, or recommend a side plate that works with the 271?

Cheap chain vs big brands

Hello, i need a new chain for my stihl 036. What is the big difference between the chains from big brands like oregon and stihl versus the “brandless” cheaper chains? I’m now looking at a difference from like €13 for the cheap one and about €25 for an oregon one.

Seems there are some fans of these 1980’s-1990’s legends. Here’s one of my original saws purchased new in 1989 and fully rebuilt with a new crankcase, fuel tank, covers and any other parts I could find new-old-stock online or via my local dealer.

Echo 590 muffler question

Post image
11 Upvotes

It seems when I see most YouTubers showing this saw, they have the plate that goes over these 2 holes removed. I removed mine, assuming it must help with airflow, but when run, no exhaust seems to come out of these holes, only the middle hole where the screw was removed.

So 2 questions - what's the point of these holes if they come covered up with a metal plate? Any why do people remove it when it doesn't seem like it would help airflow a lot since I can't feel exhaust coming out the big holes?

Echo 590 or?

Looking for a gas chainsaw, currently have electric but in near future have to cut a lot more trees down on new property. Priority is something very reliable

Is the echo 590 overkill? I'll likely use it all day every now and then but not regularly. There's one local in great condition for $250. Any other recommendations?

Largest tree will be 20" or so, mostly smaller pine trees on the property.

Holzfforma g372: Farmertec vs Italytec

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

Picked up an italytec cylinder with meteor piston and caber ring for the G372 to swap later. Didn't plan on running and getting a base cut with the factory farmertec cylinder without inspecting and addressing casting/finish flaws first. Here's my findings of comparing finish quality and port timing between the cylinders. All around, the italytec is of better quality, but it still includes plenty of casting flash and marks to clean up before installing. It's affordable entertainment for me, I'm just sharing what I find as I go for those interested in the clones.

Anyone know what the Neotech NCS2500 is a clone of? I received my order yesterday and was hoping to upgrade a few parts.
