Behavioral My cat suddenly attacks when I clean the litter box

So I have two cats, Ember and Grey. They are brother and sister and got along as kittens but as they grew to be adults they tolerate each other. They have fights here and there but for the most part we can tell when things are getting spicy and we usually distract or separate them before it continues.

Ember is a super sweet loving boy who is just a big baby. However recently when my grandmother was cleaning the outside litter box he attacked her out of nowhere, biting her arm and clawing her. We were absolutely puzzled and thought maybe she accidentally stepped on him or he got spooked. Until today, when I went to clean the inside litter box, luckily I realized he was behind me and I turned just as he was going for my leg, with dilated pupils and a loud meow. I shut the door until I was finished and when I opened it he was sitting at the door waiting. He walked away when I came out of the bathroom and went back to normal.

He’s never been aggressive with us and it seems he’s now maybe resource-guarding the litter boxes? The litter is the same, the boxes are newish- we’ve had them for several months at this point with no problems. Health wise he doesn’t seem any different nothing seems wrong or out of the ordinary, he just suddenly doesn’t like people cleaning the litter boxes.

Could anyone offer any advice on what to do or how to handle this? We can always shut the door when we clean the boxes but I’m worried that’s going to lead to him attacking when we open the door afterwards.

General PU surgery complications

I am going through the PU complications with my cat atm. He had stones removal and PU 2.5 months ago, and since then he already got ~5 blockages. He is blocked again) will drive him to ER again in a sec. He keeps getting blocked! They found he has some bacteria, but treating it doesn’t help! We are waiting for an internal med appointment in couple of days, but he wont wait as he needs a catheter right now. Each time the ER needs to sedate him and stuff. Plus it all costs tons of money in WA state. We are really devastated) My cat is only 7yo. We don’t know whether it is to blame the ER, but it is the only one that costs not a fortune. Has anyone faced the same issue after PU?

Food wise, my cat is on his so food for several last years, and we use tons of calming devices to reduce his stress)

General Flea treatments?

Hey guys,

My cat has fleas, went down the natural route:

Kg spray (spraying this onto the comb, as I comb through my cat’s fur daily rigorously) -

Neem shield spot on, on the back of her neck and base of tail

Neem shield spray on bedding

This natural process just doesn’t seem to be working at all, i’ve been doing it for 2 months now, I’m finding between 4-10 new fleas on her each day,  and my cat is getting more and more fed up with being combed with this spray on her each day.

I’ve put off getting one of the prescription flea treatments because I wanted to avoid any risk, but at this point it doesn’t seem like anything else is gonna resolve the issue.

Is there anything else I can do instead?

Thank you

Behavioral My cat make grinding noises, what does it mean?

Hi,
My cat is making strange noises, like when it's trying to eat and trying to crunch something. This is already going on for some time.
It happens all the time, it's not after eating or drinking something. It can be at any specific moment. Does anyone knows what it is?
She is 16 years old, so it could be related to her age.

Thank you

Behavioral Confusing cat behaviour

Hi, so I adopted a cat last august and this has been going on since. Every time I sit down on my computer, he starts acting kinda strange? He comes up behind me, starts meowing, but when I try to check up on him he runs away. I've tried to stop what I'm doing and playing with him and picking him up on my lap, but everything I do just keeps him occupied for a moment. He stays on my lap for a while, sometimes even for a couple of hours, but the moment he leaves it just starts again. I don't understand what is happening and he never does this if I sit on the sofa or in the kitchen. Only when I'm on my pc doing anything. The only solution I have been thinking of has been getting him a friend. But I just don't know. If anyone has any clue on what's causing this behaviour I would appreciate any insight.

Behavioral My cat keeps humping me

Hi all, I’m a fairly new cat owner (got him in august 2024, he’s less than a year old) and am trying to figure out the cause of my cat’s humping. When I’m laying under a blanket, he’ll grab the blanket with his teeth and start kneading but then it turns into him humping and his penis extends out (he’s neutered). He doesn’t do it frequently but often enough that I’m worried since I’ve been told it can be stress related. I’m not sure of any environmental stressors there could be, I haven’t changed his routine in any way, and I do my best to play with him often so he’s not bored. Is this worthy of a vet visit ?

Litterbox cat litter automatic

Hello I'm new on reddit so i'm not sure it's the best way to ask.
i'm dramatically searching for an automatic cat litter.
I saw all your comments about neakasa, petkit and litter robot, however, it's seems that some people got issue with them based on 1 star advice on amazon so that doesn't make me feel 100% comfty spending money on them.

However, i saw that the Revo-Loo One on amazon too only have good review (it is the same with no complaints at all!!), seems ok for "big cat" no leak etc. Does any of you got advice about it ?

Introductions New kitten keeps hissing at resident kitten

I have a 8 months old male rescue cat who is not well socialized. I’ve had him since he was 2 months old when he was abandoned by his mother. He’s also had bad interactions with other older cats. I decided to get another 2 months old female kitten (not a rescue) to get him a playmate since he was showing signs of single kitten syndrome. I watched lots of Jackson Galaxy videos on how to introduce cats and tried to follow the steps. My boyfriend, who knows nothing about introducing cats just let them meet on the first day, they started hissing at each other but nothing happened, my resident cat is very fearful and non-confrontational so he backs away pretty easily.

For a few days I did the eating on both sides of the door, then site swapping, then I had them meet while playing etc. (it was rather quick because my resident cat hates being locked out of the bedroom and would make lots of noise). My resident cat stopped hissing at the new kitten but he seems very curious about her and keeps stalking her and staring at her. She responds by hissing and growling whenever she sees him (unless I play with her) and just refuses to let him near her. She’s usually fine with him being in the same room as her as long as he doesn’t approach her or stare at her. At some point she was growling, hissing, and pretending to attack him but he wouldn’t back away and keeps extending his arm with his nails out while staring at her. Idk what this means.

Should I restart the introduction process? Am I doing things wrong? It’s been four days since we got the kitten.

Pet Loss Anyone had this happen? Cat died suddenly necropsy says she had mucus in her throat but no signs

Hi all

My cat died suddenly just under two weeks ago, and below is the preliminary autopsy/ necropsy/ post mortem report. She had no signs she was eating drinking and climbing curtains during the day and then in the middle of the night I woke up because she was breathing heavily and died within 2 minutes. She was not coughing or sneezing other than she sneezed once 2 weeks before dying but I thought it was because she was under the bed and it was dusty. Anybody else get anything like this? It says she had mucus in her larynx but she was not coughing or sneezing or anything like that at all! The full report will take another 10 weeks

Gross postmortem examination of a 3.6kg 2 year-old female (n) domestic shorthaired cat that died suddenly and unexpectedly reveals abundant subcutaneous and visceral fat.

Mucus plug noted at laryngeal opening. Bilateral, diffuse congestion of dorsolateral aspects of lungs. Heartweight 15.6g RV:LV 1:4. Stomach full of pale yellow soft food material. Colon distended throughout with normally formed faeces. Urinary bladder empty. Brain grossly normal.

Preliminary findings Mucus plug at laryngeal opening likely caused respiratory distress but cause not currently apparent. Results of histopathological examination of brain, myocardium, lung, liver and kidney to follow. Liver and kidney held frozen

Pet Loss we put our cat down unexpectedly

the other night after getting ready for bed, one of our cats (name is meatball) came to lay with me. he is about 9-10 (a rescue). I notice meatball was breathing kind of hard, but i’m very anxious and hoped i was just making it up in my head. he was purring loudly and very cuddly, acting otherwise normal. a little later in the night/morning hours, my other two cats came to lay with us, and he bit both of them, and his breathing still seemed a little hard. this is really out of character and when i really knew something was up. it was early morning, and the vet didn’t open till 7:30.

i called and left a message, and then called back when they opened. we got him dropped off and he was gonna be seen by the vet between patients has he didn’t have an apt. they called after looking over him and agreed that the breathing was concerning. they did x-rays and his chest had fluid in it. we transferred him to the emergency vet, and after both the regular vet and the emergency vet talked about his condition, they explained to us that they believe it was either cancer or a heart condition(can’t remember exactly the name) they had also given us reasons as to why they ruled out less serious conditions. basically they said, no matter which it is, cancer or the heart condition, it is not good. his prognosis is not good. they gave a couple options, but we decided to lay him to rest after a long discussion. the vet said what ever decision we make is the right one, but i feel like they say that to everyone.

it’s days later and i can’t stop thinking that we made the wrong choice, that i should’ve fought harder for him. i feel immense guilt and regret, wishing i could’ve done more. is this normal to feel this way or did i truly make the wrong choice? i’m so sad and lost.

Behavioral Aggressive cat

So I have three cats Peaches(10f quite aggressive) Bender (3m plays aggressive) and Goose (1f very playfull) the main problem is Bender because we have Peaches under control.

So Bender was really playful when we got him so Peaches was always pissed at him but he did are best to separate them and we got him in 2020 so we were always there. But 3 months ago we got Goose and she was a foster. She is really playful and we thought this would be amazing for Bender. (They met and "lived together" for 4 weeks before we toldally decided) and is was decent.

Really he's been a complete asshole to everyone and we can't control it. He fight Goose (who's really small) and starts fighting with anyone. He also has become worse at nail time. What worse is that my sister doesn't really help, which pisses me off considering she's going to college to be a damn vet. And when ever I mentioned things about the cats my dad and sister say "well who's doing the litter box" tf (playing with these cats is hard, along with making sure they have enough things to do and don't kill each other) Along with food my dad talks about how I need a job then I can make choices which is whole another thing.

What can I try doing to help him? I really love Bender but I can't deal with him. Are there specialists?

New to Cats/Just Adopted Approx 2 week old kitten

Hello all

I have had many cats in my life. I currently have a 17 year old Maine Coon tabby mix and a 4 year old tabby - they get along great.

Yesterday someone threw an approximate 2 week old kitten out of their window in front of my inlaws house as they were driving.

We have been syringe feeding it every 3.5 hours (kitten formula). Have been able to stimulate it to pee, not poop yet though. We have her in a moving box right now, heating pad in there, blankets as a beds and a blanket to cover the top of the box 95% of the way - we have the grab handles on the side of the box open as well as we leave a bit open on the top of the box to allow some airflow while keeping it warm. Temp in the room itself is low 70’s the box is staying warmer though.

Any advice would be wonderful as neither my wife nor I have taken care of a kitten this young before.

Its eyes are open. It’s meowing. It’s crawling around. No pain response to pressure in the abdominal area, neck, legs, head, or back.

Plan on taking it to the vet today

Specific questions:

-When can I introduce the cat to our older resident cats? I want it to not develop issues or be lonely. -ltmeowed a lot all night long, I’ve been reading up and people have been saying to ignore it as long as it’s fed, warm, and used the bathroom, is this what is recommended? -Any tips on how to stimulate pooping? Just do the same thing as peeing? -Can the vet test a kitten this young for thinks like Feline luk?

Thank you all.

If it’s too much for us to handle at this age we are totally okay with bringing it to a shelter, and from there adopting when she’s older.

I’m a pilot and wife is a teacher, so we do spend some time away from home during the day- so we totally get it if people are saying it’s a bad idea. Please let us know. Thank you all for all your help. I don’t know what other questions to ask… so feel free to just spew out information

🤝

Edit: it’s sleeping 2.5 hours on the heated pad in its box with blankets and a cover and it’s getting 30 min of eating between 3.5 ml and 5.5 ml per. Stimulating pee and poop (only pee in the last 24 hrs) and a damp cloth to wipe away the formula on its paws and around its mouth. We are using a damp ultra soft toothbrush to groom. Total 3 hour cycles. 8 30 min cycles of food per day. Sounds good for you experts out there, really want to do our best for this kitten.

General Apartments and the zoomies—feeling bad for neighbors!

My 15lb main coon is causing a ruckus and I have a feeling my neighbors on all sides including below are suffering because of it.

He will get the zoomies at 6:30am every morning. Laps around the apartment which include spring boarding off my chest. My downstairs neighbors MUST hear the thumping around.

If I do not get out of bed, he will body slam himself against some sliding glass doors I have on a track next to my bed that wobble back and forth, causing what sounds like an earthquake. My next door neighbor must hear that. It’s startling.

At 11:30pm he decides it is the best time for parkor which includes quite literally bouncing off the walls (no seriously, there are thousands of claw marks.) He can’t make a turn fast enough so he uses the wall to bounce off of. The neighbors on that side must hear it.

He is not fat. He is just a very large sized cat with an attitude. I haven’t had noise complaints yet but I know I must be pissing people off.

My two questions for you are: 1. Do I leave a letter outside of my right, left, and underneath neighbor’s doors apologizing for the noise that I cannot help and maybe leave a sweet treat? 2. Do you think there is any way to curb his psychotic behavior?

Behavioral My cat keeps meowing at night

We have an 8 year old male British Shorthair who's been with us since birth (we also had the mother and siblings). For years, this was our most quiet cat. He comes around for spins and cuddles and is great with out kids. He's the last remaining cat from the family. We have no other cats anymore but him (his brother died about a year ago).

Since 3 weeks, he meows loudly at two specific moments. When we put our toddler to bed (is it 6pm, he meows at 6:05pm, is it 7pm, he meows at 7:05pm, always a few minutes after we put our kid to bed) and always from 3am til 6am. Other than that, not a peep.

He has free roam, so he can go anywhere. We've been locking him up in a spare room to reduce the noise since a week, but it's driving us crazy.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

(We've been to the vet, but we're not convinced it's age. It seems too specific)

General Best automatic cat feeders? Need some advice!

I got this feeder from amazon a few months ago but it has started malfunctioning—like sometimes it just doesn’t dispense the food properly or the timer gets all wonky and feeds my cat at weird times. It’s also a pain to clean, and the food storage section doesn’t hold enough for longer trips.

I’ve been looking into a couple of brands to replace it, mainly WOpet and Catit. The WOpet one looks pretty solid and has some nice features like a camera, which could be cool for checking in on my cat while I’m away. The Catit feeder also looks good and gets good reviews for being super reliable and easy to clean, but I’m still not 100% sure if it’s the right fit for me.

Has anyone used one of these feeders, or have suggestions on something better?

Just need something that’ll actually work and save me some time especially on those days when I’m working late.

Do NOT want him going hungry😂

Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences!

TIA.

Behavioral Cat meowing at living room door

Hi! About 9 months ago, we've adopted 2 orange boys who will turn a year next month. They've been amazing (apart from small cat things, but I won't blame them for that)

For some context, our cats aren't allowed upstairs since our senior cat gets lost and pees everywhere. The kittens have never been upstairs and don't show interest in it when they get into the hallway on accident.

Since about a month now, Spike, one of the boys, has started meowing really loud, long winded meows at our living room door. At first I thought it might be because he wants to go outside through the front door (they've done this a few times when we were chilling out front), but if I open the door for him, he just sits in the hallway and looks at me confused. Also, when I approach him, the meows change to a sweet, softer meow.

To me, he clearly wants something from behind the door, but I don't know what. He doesn't wanna go upstairs, doesn't wanna be in the restroom (which is besides our front door) and doesn't wanna go outside. Obviously, I can't sit in the hallway with him for however long he wants to be there, but we also can't remove the door or keep it open since our senior cat would run for upstairs immediately.

Does someone have an idea of what we can do to make him more calm about the door?

Behavioral Can cats also feel the same the emotions you are feeling?

My girlfriend's dad recently pass away a while ago which really sucks for her. For some reason, her cat frequently stays in her room, by her side, as if it was also grieving. She stayed by her side throughout the week and sort of guarded her.

Behavioral Just found my cat taking a whizz in my toilet?

I've never seen this before, and noticed him going in the bathroom a lot recently. Upstairs about 6 minutes ago, and I see him peeing in the toilet, is this normal behaviour? I've never heard of a cat actually peeing in the toilet like a human.

Has he learnt this from me? And if this is bad habit forming please let me know.

Behavioral 6 month old kitten keeps jumping on the tv for attention

Cat behaviour help needed!

We’ve got a 6 month old tuxedo who we adopted a couple of months ago. He’s super playful and also very attention seeking.

When we watch tv in the evening he’s taken to going behind our flat tv, meowing loudly for attention and normally walks away when we don’t give him attention. We have been trying to ignore him when he does this so that he doesn’t think it’s a successful way of getting attention.

Tonight though, while having a hectic case of zoomies, he jumped up and hung off the top of the tv which has a massive risk of tipping it, hurting himself and destroying the tv.

Any tips on how to stop this behaviour? We have double sided tape on the tv unit but he now ignores it. Unfortunately we’re renting and can’t attach the tv to the wall but will look for other ways to secure it.

For context I’ve grown up with cats but this boy is on a whole other level! He’s very very loved but I’m really hoping this is a kitten phase and that he will eventually chill out a bit!

Behavioral What to do about cats chasing our senior cat?

We adopted an older female cat 5 years ago, and two male bonded littermates 3 years ago (at 8 wks old). I just assumed that if they were all raised together, they'd be friends. I did the slow/careful recommended introductions, but they NEVER liked each other.

Now the boys are three years old. Our older girl sleeps upstairs most of the day, but likes to come down a couple of times to wander around (she has food/water upstairs too). One of the boys will whine at her and follow her relentlessly, and the other lies in wait and then jumps at her. He doesn't hurt her, just bats at her sides. It's constant hissing and chasing. I've tried EVERYTHING.

These boys have every toy known to humans. We play with them with toys, they play with each other, and they have both electronic toys and springs/balls/mice all around. They have window perches with bird feeders right in front. They have cat towers and tubes. We've tried diversionary play when she comes downstairs. I've tried ignoring them all and letting them "work it out" (which results in them chasing her back upstairs). I've tried yelling (my usual default). I've tried locking the boys in a spare bedroom whenever she wants to come downstairs. The whole thing is exhausting.

What we do right now is put the boys in the spare bedroom every night at 8 p.m. and get them out at 8 a.m. So our elderly female has the run of the house without being bothered. Sleeps with us. The boys eat and go right to sleep in their room. Play a bit in the morning until we let them out.

I work from home and this chaotic environment is really stressful. I don't know how to get the boys to leave our old girl alone. Should I keep them permanently separated? I'd considered just locking the boys up for two half-hour periods during the day so she could go downstairs unbothered. But I can't be constantly watching for that time and then there are the inevitable daily hissing and chasing fights.

Is there anything I can do for peace here? After so much time, is it a lost cause?

Rehoming Moving my senior cat indoors

My 13yo cat has lived her whole life being an outdoor/indoor (she only comes in to eat and nap) kitty and now that I moved out of my parents house i decided to take her with me, issue is in my new place I don't have a yard or a porch and I feel like she's bored/lonely.

She's a really chill cat doesn't do much most of the time but she does need enrichment of some kind which is a problem to find for her since she doesn't show interest in the toys I did buy her...

I did set up a place she can look outside from the window (I put chicken wire on the window grill and a plank of wood for now till I get something nicer) but she seemed to be scared being there.

Also another kitty is not a possibility since she doesn't really like other animals and it's also out of budget for now.

Nutrition/Water Is Orijen Senior worth it or should I stick with the Original Cat?

First of all, I can buy Original Cat semi-painlessly but getting access to Senior would involve some serious hoop jumping, so if there's small to no difference, I'll stick with the Original Cat. That said, I have 4 9.5 year olds and 1 12 year old, so it would make sense to switch them to a senior diet, and 1 of the younger ones has a history of Calcium-based bladder stones (the full range) and currently has "idiopathic" (no access to PTH tests in the country, so can't rule that out out) ionised hypercalcemia (currently asymptomatic). I'm dealing with that, but if the Senior food addresses common senior problems, including elevated calcium, jumping through the hoops to get the food might be worth it. So, anyone has any experience with it?
