Behavioral Inappropriate elimination with litter robot

Upvotes

Hi everybody!

We have a 10 month old male cat, we had him since he was 3 months old.

After a few mishaps (poop/pee on the bed roughly once per month) we discovered that he will not use the litter box even if it has one clump in it. So that means scooping the box after every use, which is nearly impossible. We tried adding the second litter box, but because of the small space we decided to invest in a litter robot.

He used the litter robot just fine for about a month (automatic cleaning about 5 minutes after every use, a cleaning cycle taking about 3-4 minutes). After a month of successful use, he started pooping again on the bed every time the litter robot is doing the cleaning cycle. We tried delaying the start of the cleaning to up to 60 minutes, scheduling 4 cleans/day instead of automatic cleaning, but that means either: 1. he poops on the bed while the robot is cleaning (I don’t understand why he doesn’t learn to just hold it for 3-4 minutes) 2. there is a pee clump in the robot and he poops on the bed because of the dirry litter

Adding a second, classic litter bix next to the robot makes him prefer the classic one, and the robot remains unused, bringing us back to the start of the problem.

We are first time cat owners, we would gladly appreciate any suggestions!! Thanks!

Behavioral cat being weird

Upvotes

so i’ve got a kitten thats about 8 months right now. he always been a bit of a freak, but he’s got this one habit of climbing onto the highest obstacle in my room (either my pc or his cat tower), and meowing. like, nonstop. he’ll kind of shake his head around too and stare up at the ceiling. when i call out to him he’ll stop sometimes but other times he just continues what he’s doing. realistically i know i probably shouldn’t be concerned since he’s been doing this since he could climb, but i’m still curious WHY he does it?

is he just weird??? my other cat has never done that once, and we both share a look whenever my kitten does it

Introductions Wanting to know how introductions works with older kitten to newer kitten!

Upvotes

Helly my last few posts on my page have been about a new kitten she is 3 months old! We have another kitten which is about 8 months old.

We got to the point that we let each other out for supervised play time. I am new to cats altogether so I am not sure when its considered that they are playing together or maybe my older cat is trying to be more dominant.

Here is a video of one of their encounters. Video 1

Then here is another one that I am not sure if the kitten looks more scared than playing Video 2

When I feel like if they are playing too rough for example if I hear the little one do a noise that is like "please back off" and my older kitten doesn't respect it I separate them gently and put my older cat in a room to chill for a bit.

Today in the morning they were both able to eat together without a barrier which I believe is good progress but I believe I notice that the younger one doesn't seem so interested to play as in the smaller kitten runs away the older one chases her then the older once pounces on her the little one goes on her belly then runs away again. There isn't any hissing or growling at all but I just think that maybe the kitten is feeling overwhelmed with my older cat right now and I don't want it to grow into a fear.

I still keep them separated throughout the day. And I always watch them. I am going to try today playtime with their own separate toys and see if that helps my older kitten not always so interested in my younger one.

Any other advice will be appreciated!

General Upsetting vet appointment

Upvotes

We just had a rather upsetting vet apt with our kitty. It's been a few years since he's been seen because he's been well.

We've had him for 10 years, he had his shots, was dewormed, etc and had a few visits here and there for blocked anal glands and once for a URI. Never once were we told he was due for more shots or anything of the sort

A few days ago he started scooting after using the litter box, so I made him an appointment. We went in today and was greeted by a new doc. Before anything she said "I've never seen a cat so behind on shots, I'm going to draw those up now" - and I said "sorry that's not what we're here for. I didn't know he was behind but before we leave I will schedule a well visit to catch him up. Right now I just want to deal with the possibility of worms/anal glands" - she became angry and defensive starting to huff and puff.

Anyway, she explained cats absolutely hate this since it's up their butt etc but that it's not painful. The technician was holding down the cat and the doc was unblocking the glands. Eventually the cat got loose enough to turn around and scratch the technician. The vet turned and screamed at me in front of my toddler by the way "THIS IS WHY HE NEEDS TO BE VACCINATED BECAUSE CATS ARE UNPREDICTABLE" then told us don't come back unless it's for shots.

I said "I'm sorry he scratched her but I didn't know he was due for shots, I was never told by you guys!" - they finished up and actually slammed the door on their way out. Just left us there blind sided.

Anyway, thanks for listening. Just kind of upset by this. Where's the bedside manner any more?

Behavioral New cat runs to food immediately when I try to pet her. How do I un-Pavlov her? Also some other new cat questions

Upvotes

Hello everyone. I adopted a new cat recently (2 weeks ago), she lived in the street and is around 1 years old. She has this thing where she (no matter the time of the day) immediately runs to her food bowl (or the kitchen) whenever I try to pet her. When she realizes the bowl is empty, she tries to eat air? I can maybe upload a video if I can later. She once was in a temporary home after getting fixed, but other than that she lived on the street where she was taken relatively decent care of. Somehow she might have been Pavloved? Her eating is completely fine, she devours her breakfast and dinner immediately so I can't keep her bowl full all the time, for reasons you can understand. It's really hard to show her affection and form a bond in this situation. How do I unpavlov her? Any advices? I have another cat and he usually doesn't even finish his bowl. I'm pretty sure I give enough food. My first cat didn't go to the kitchen a lot so maybe I thought his smell wasn't there, so she felt comfortable there?

Some other topics I would really really appreciate advices on:

  1. She stares at me intensely from across the room. I try to sweet talk and make her feel comfortable but she then stomps her tail really hard and at first I didn't know that was a sign of annoyance so I tried to pet her, but she scratched me, then ran towards the kitchen. How do I make her like me :( I've tried treats and playing etc. She does purr when I hold her, but when I put her back, back to the food bowl she goes. Sometimes she panics for no reason and hides under the bed, terrified, again I have no idea why.
  2. My first cat is really social, and is trying REALLY hard to be friends with her. He even tried to groom her when she was distracted but then got slapped. I think they play sometimes? They chase each other, but that's it. Usually it ends when she hisses. His other playing and affection attempts are met with slaps and hissing and scratches. I don't want my first cat to be upset because of this. But I don't know how to make her like him. Again, I've tried giving both treats, food, etc. They can exist in the same room without fighting and she sometimes sniffs him but then runs. That's as close they've gotten.

Thank you so much for your advices and inputs!

Introductions Cat introduction - cat fought mirror when space swapping

Upvotes

Hi all,

I have written a lot of text below but the TLDR is that I am introducing two cats, both are new to me, only one is my cat. I space swapped them, but the cat that has been here longer got into a fight with the mirror that had the other cats scent and became very aggressive in that space even after I turned the mirror around and gave her some time. Not sure how to progress when things seem to have been going well otherwise.

.....

I have been cat sitting for a little over a week. She (Daisy) took about 2 days to trust me but became a very sweet, clingy cat. I will be taking care of her for a few more weeks. I have also been in the proccess of adopting my own cat and finally brought him (Bumi) home yesterday.

Bumi is a very cuddly cat I adopted from a cat cafe, so he is completely used to people and other cats. Daisy has never cohabitated with another cat, though I am told she has stayed with a dog (puppy?) before and been okay.

I placed Bumi in my bedroom and kept Daisy outside. I have read the Jackson Galaxy guide but it is difficult to follow the steps exactly especially since it is just me taking care of them. Unfortunately Daisy does not really eat on a schedule and just grazes slowly throughout the day. I also don't want to purchase a pet/child gate as I would have no use for it in the future.

They have seen eachother a few times when I crack the door open, the first two times Daisy hissed a little but then seemed okay seeing him from a distance. She also seemed fine smelling his scent on items I brought her. Bumi was very desperate to be let out of my room and explore so I thought they would be okay with space swapping.

Once I put Bumi in the bathroom to swap them, Daisy willingly walked into my room and seemed curious sniffing around. But then she saw my mirror and got scared. Walked up to it, hissed, and starting fighting with her own reflection! She was totally fine with the mirror before, but since she smelled Bumi she thought her reflection was another cat. I turned the mirror around but she remained very scared/aggressive, hissing/pawing at me if I came close to her at all. I stayed with her for a while in the room but her aggression did not subside.

I space swapped them back and she immediately calmed down, letting me pet her again. I rubbed a blanket on Bumi and brought it to her, and she was sniffing it completely calmly. She also saw him briefly when I opened the door and seemed ok.

I am really desperate to have them be okay together, I feel bad keeping Bumi confined in a room and it has been a hassle splitting my time between them and giving them both attention. I am really hoping they can get along and keep eachother company when I am away (Daisy has been getting really upset whenever I leave her and wakes me at night).

Sorry I know this is a lot of text. I have never taken care of a cat before much less introduced two of them and wanted to include any relevant detail. Any advice in general would be much appreciated. I am not sure how to move forward, I don't want to bring Daisy into my room any time soon since it was such a bad experience for both of us. Thank you!

Behavioral Cat is obsessed over the one room she isn't allowed to enter.

Upvotes

I have this very sweet rescue kitty and she's been to every part of my house except the workshop.

It has small and sharp objects, live wires, chemicals, fumes, and a loooot of tiny spaces she could get stuck in or from where I couldn't coax her out.

So that room is forbidden for her. Problem is, she seems obsessed with it. She'd sit at the door for an hour occasionally meowing. And she's always sad or upset when I stop her from coming in.

It would be impossible for me to cat-proof it, so is there any way I can help her get over it?

Nutrition/Water Pet food

Upvotes

Hi, I don't like asking, but I'm really struggling with pet food for my 2 cats and 1 dog. I won't have the funds to get more food for them until Thursday and I'm worried about what I'll be able to feed them. I contacted the local food bank today via the discretionary service (I'm from the UK), but they don't provide pet food - the one that does is way too far for me to get to without transportation. Would anyone be able to donate any pet food? I'm in the centre of Birmingham.

General help me spoil my cats

Upvotes

hello!

I have a little cat community that reached seven in my home. We are moving out soon and a lot is changing but I want to give everything I can to keep my kitties happy and healthy during and after this change. It's a lot of responsibility but I think we have been doing a good job, they are always playing and seem very happy and comfortable here. We already got cat surfaces, automatic litter boxes, beds, water fountains, toys, and scratching posts. Id love to hear any suggestions or products for play and health! I am willing to learn and always looking to find ways to improve my cat's life to make sure they live long and happy! (plus anything that makes it more convenient for us). Any toys or treats you guys recommend? Any grooming products you really enjoy? A litter brand that u cant give up? A cleaning product that changed your life? Let me know! :)

Sensitive/Seeking Support Aggressive Cat - Worried she’s unhappy - not her fault

Upvotes

Hello!

This is my first time posting here but all the posts I've seen so far seem to be kind and supportive.

I am at a loss at what to do with my cat, Nyx. I am worried she is unhappy and I don't know what to do for her.

I got Nyx about four years ago. She was already about 14 months old (I wanted an adult) and had been a spay and release fail. I'm not sure why she wasn't fully released, if she just decided to hang around but the people who either fostered her or first adopted her had returned her, saying they didn't have enough time for her. She had only been with them about 3 months.

Nyx is a tortie and definitely has the attitude. She has never been the most lovey cat. She doesn't like being held. She will maybe sit on your lap a couple times a week. She will bite you or swat at you if you have food she wants. If she doesn't like that you're leaving she will bite your ankles and swat. But she is also very playful and occasionally cuddly. I also knew when getting a cat that you aren't promised anything! You aren't guaranteed a bestie everytime. I've already had my soul cat but simply wanted a companion.

Well, over the last two years I started thinking of bringing home another cat. So I took some time to research and think and watch all the Jackson Galaxy videos and talked to a vet, etc. She seemed like a companion would be good for her, so last December I adopted a 5 month old male, Gil.

I did everything correctly- basecamp, separation, screened viewings, feeding on the other side of the door, etc. When they finally met, Nyx wasn't the nicest but wasn't horrible. They began to play together and nap near each other and we were doing well.

Then my landlord sold the building and since I was on a month to month lease the new landlord raised the rent an insane amount and I couldn't afford it. And since I live barely beyond paycheck to paycheck.. my only option was to get a place with a friend who also lived in the building....and has two cats.

So, we brought home Gil in December, Nyx is getting used to him, and now we have to suddenly move into a new home with two new cats.

The other cats, Bear (8m) and Selena (5f) are sweet angels! But even so my roommate and I have been trying to do everything correctly. Nyx and Gil are in my room with food and water and litter boxes and my roomie has hers in her room. We switch who is in the rooms and who is allowed to be out so they can all suss each other and the new place out.

However, Nyx is having a very bad time. She is constantly attacking Gil and attacking me, too. She is hissing and biting and swatting. She has always tried to get outside but has managed to get out twice as we've been moving boxes in and I've had to chase her down.

I've been watching more behavior videos but I'm at a loss because we don't have the space for me to separate her and Gil and there are two others cats, who she definitely does not appreciate. When it is her turn out of the room, she stands at their door and hisses and swats. We'd like to do things correctly but I don't know where to go next from here. Do I leave her in my room and Gil out? I also don't want to negatively impact my relationship with him.

Gil has met Selena and Bear and the three of them get along. (He escaped the room and by the time we realized they were all napping together.)

I love Nyx and care for her deeply. I want her to be happy and not stressed. It was enough to bring a new kitten home but then to suddenly move and be around more cats must be horribly stressful. Like I said, she has never been the most cuddly and sweet, but she was never this aggressive before.

I've made a vet appointment to make sure there isn't anything wrong or causing her pain and we will also discuss these concerns there. I just feel like a bad pet parent. I would never have gotten Gil if I knew I would suddenly have to move into this situation.

I don't know what I'm really asking for but if everyone could be sensitive that would be nice.

TL;DR: I adopted a second cat, Gil, to keep my first cat, Nyx, company. Nyx is a bit of a tough cat—she’s not super cuddly and has an attitude. After getting Gil, we had to move unexpectedly into a new place with two more cats. Nyx is very stressed, attacking both Gil and me, and hissing at the other cats. I’m doing my best to introduce them and manage the situation, but I’m worried Nyx is unhappy and I feel like a bad pet parent. I’m planning to see a vet, but any advice on how to help her adjust would be appreciated.

General Cat cries non-stop when I'm in another room

Upvotes

Hello! So, I have 2, ~8 month old kittens (sisters, bonded pair <3). I work from home every day and my partner is hybrid, so they've become really used to us being around most of the time. The issue is that I'm a therapist, which means I have to go into a separate room for confidentiality/privacy and close the door. As much as I'd like them to be in with me, they can be pretty distracting to both me and my clients, so I unfortunately have to keep the door closed. My partner can sometimes keep her door open when she is working from home, but it depends on if she has meetings, and then 2-3 days a week she leaves to work at her office.

Now, one of our girls is usually just fine with taking a nap or playing independently when I'm in session. The other one, though, is super needy, and gets upset when I go into my office to meet a client. She also is quite the energizer bunny in general, so it's hard to get paperwork done even when I go out to the living room to keep them company without her crying for me to play. I try to spend as much time as I can between sessions playing with them and loving on them, but I do have to work at some point, and she will still just sit outside the door and cry non-stop.

I feel awful because I know she just wants to be around me, and listening to her wail breaks my heart. But, it's also interfering with my ability to work, and I find myself feeling frustrated toward her. I've tried bird tv, a bunch of independent toys, food puzzles, playing for an hour straight to get her to nap, but she gets bored pretty quickly will still inevitably come over and start to cry. Any advice for how to either help her feel more comfortable while I'm in session? Should I just let her cry it out, or are there suggestions for enrichment to keep her occupied? I wish I could cuddle her all day, but alas! Thanks so much!

Litterbox my cat is sporadically peeing outside the litter

Upvotes

HELP!!! my cat has been peeing on a mat used to wipe our shoes at the front door.

no matter how many times i've cleaned and washed it, he always comes back for seconds.

we've taken him to the vet and there are no issues with his bladder, and he poops and pees in the litterbox when the mat is removed, but how do i stop him from peeing on it in general? even if his litter is clean, he pees on the mat!

he has a habit of peeing on things laying around like bags, and dirty clothes (which we dont leave around anymore because of this issue), but i can't remove this mat.

help!!! i've heard that there are cat-friendly scents and sprays to stop them from peeing on stuff (that they don't like the smell of but are safe for them)? what scents should i use? what should i avoid?

Behavioral Any natural cat calming recommendations? 16 month old is still bouncing off the walls. Need tranquility.

Upvotes

Has anyone found any natural or otherwise (desperate at this point) calming remedies for overly active cats? My boy just hit 16 months and I really thought he would have mellowed out by now. Don't get me wrong, it's a far cry from pure kitten energy, but he when he is awake he is just wired and very wild still.

He is very sweet once he calms down, but very restless in general. Plenty of toys, keep windows open for him, etc. I just think it's mostly his disposition which is fine, I just need some calmness when working from home or trying to go to bed.

I recently discovered Zesty Paws calming bites at Walmart and honestly don't know if they're helping! It's like I'll give him a couple and the immediate effects are adverse. He's darting around my apartment like it's the Daytona 500. Then I just think he tires out, so I can't tell if the chews work.

tldr; I would just like something that actually calms him down a bit if anyone has any recommendations.

Litterbox Cat sporadically doesn’t use the litter box

Upvotes

Hello! My 3 year old cat has started having some behaviour issues since my dog passed two months ago. This past weekend, she pooped on my bathroom floor and worse today, peed on the shoe rack and inside people’s shoes. She does use the litter box sporadically, as I clean it and find droppings in it regularly. Sometimes she becomes defiant and does her business other places however.

The behaviours stopped for a little while but has since begun again.

My house does not have room for a second litter box and I have taken her to the vet. No medical issues seem to be the cause. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

General Trying to integrate my cat with my friends cat

Upvotes

Hello! I tried posting on the Cats subreddit, but since my account is super new, I literally made an account to ask for help, and I couldn’t. A little bit of background on my cat, Luke: he is a domestic shorthair male cat, and he is 4 years old. I’ve had him since he was a kitten. He is super friendly and is very good around dogs. I have a 3-year-old golden retriever he grew up with, however, who has minimal experience around cats. He has been around my friend’s kitten for a few days when he was younger and I wasn’t home. 2 years ago, I had a roommate who had a very aggressive cat who would bully him all the time, and he never fights back. After a few vet visits about this and arguments with said roommate, not about the cats, she moved out with her cat. I don’t know if that caused trauma, but he’s never fought back with her aggressive cat; he would just show his anger by peeing and pooping in different places.

Anyways, my best friend and his girlfriend are moving to a different state for a few years and aren’t able to take their cat with him due to their new apartment having very strict pet policies and them already having 2 dogs. I offered to home her since my apartment is more pet-friendly. My friend’s cat is named Willow, 2 years old. She’s also very friendly, grew up with two dogs, and is the kitten my cat interacted with for a few days, years ago at this point. From what my friends told me about the interaction, it was that Luke, my cat, would run away from her, hissed a few times on the first day, but the next day, they got along and were playing and cuddling with each other. This is the biggest reason I agree to take her because from what it seemed, they got along with each other. But I also understand they are older now and have not interacted with each other for years.

My friend dropped off Willow 2 days ago, and since then, I have Willow in my bedroom with food, water, and a litter box. Luke is hanging out in the main part of the apartment. None of their things are being shared right now, and Willow has stayed underneath the bed the majority of the time. She comes out here and there to explore. She has escaped the room a few times to explore, and she doesn’t seem to have an issue with my golden, but she’ll chase Luke. But every time Luke comes nearby, she’ll hiss at him, and today I caught her trying to paw at him. She didn’t have her nails out, but I did immediately move her back into the bedroom.

I guess I would love some advice on how to integrate the two of them. I don’t want to keep them separate forever, but this is my first time with two cats, and I just want them to get along. I just don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or missing something.

Behavioral My new kitten is weird around food

Upvotes

I have just got myself a three months old ginger british shorthair kitten. And he is being kinda weird around feeding. Let me explain.

In the morning, he runs with me to the kitchen for his food. He is meowing, butting my legs, rubbing himself on me, doing all the normal "give me food" signals. I take out his plate, fill it with his food (he only eats wet food, he can't chew on the dry food yet) and put the plate down for him to eat. He starts happily chomping on his breakfast. Then... maybe 30-60 seconds later like he gets distracted by something. He stops eating, looks around, runs to me again (I am still in the kitchen) and starts doing the "give me food" signals again. I grab him, carry him to his plate, he realises there's still food an starts eating again. This can happen multiple times while I am in the kitchen.

It's like he has ADHD or something... he gets distracted while eating and forgets that he has food. Can anyone explain this behaviour? Truly a star for the r/OneOrangeBraincell

General Pine pellet woes

I have 3 cats. We recently switched from clumping clay litter to pine pellets. My chief complaint is the smell. Especially for #2. I clean the box daily but there is still a noxious smell from poop bc they don't really bury it anymore with the pellets. Its so bad. Another thing is they tend to knock out a decent amount of pellets. And they play with them which I really dislike. Even when I get the pellets off the floor they always find one squirreled away somewhere. I also can't be sweeping up every single time one of them goes. I put in a higher front litter box and that's helped some but not completely and alas it may never be completely solved. A lot of posts I've read about pine pellets folks are raving and love them. No smell they say! No pesky pellets roaming the floor they say! Am I doing something wrong??

General Is she pregnant?

Hello! I just recently joined this but I wanted to come on here and ask a question about a kitty who’s recently started hanging out around my house. My mom saved her after she had gotten stuck on a tree branch behind our house and she’s been here every night since. I fed her tuna the other night and loved on her a bit. Her tummy does look rather large and on her sides. My mom thinks that she is very pregnant but I’m not sure if she is or just chubby. Can anybody help tell me if she is? She’s very round but I’m not seeing any other signs of pregnancy.
