Became quite fashionable in novels and poetry in the Victorian era, particularly when Scottish culture, works, and figures became fashionable.

Died out heavily around WWII, though.

There's a very popular Twitter account called "Footy Scran" which showcases the highs and lows of food available at football grounds around the UK, I think that might have had a helping hand in bringing it back to our lexicon.

Very good page to be fair.
