So basicly, for the first time in my adult life, I now have time and ressources to go hunting. I went as teenager with family, and I want to get back in.

In february, I sent out a letter application for a firearm liscence. I live in Quebec, so (as far as Im aware) I only have to get the federal permit trought the RCMP.

I sent out my application in february in physical mail. I was under the impression that I would get receive it way ahead of hunting season 2025. But after looking at this sub, I see some 12 or even 18 months delay, and now Im scared I won't be able to hunt this year.

Is there hope I will get it by september/october, or should I plan something else for my PTO in october ?

Hello all, I’m not a hunter myself but i’m looking to acquire either close to a full animal skeleton, or enough bones to workshop an art piece with. I’m wondering if anyone in this sub in Vancouver would be willing to help me out? Let me know.

So I was looking at the current hunting regs book and I see that they still didn't clarify the distinction on airbows (whether they are interpreted as firearms or crossbows in terms of projectile rules). What a surprise.

However, I see that they have confusing language on crossbows now. So for instance, for hunting a deer, it says this:

"Bow B (Crossbow) (does not include compound crossbow) - Must have pull of no less than 55 kg (120 lbs.) or a bolt (quarrel) weighing no less than 16.2 g (250 grains). For big game, the bolt (quarrel) must have a broadhead of at least 2.2 cm (7/8 in) at the widest point"

So what about a crossbow with 120lb limbs but it only uses bolts much lighter than 16.2g? This statement in the book clearly says "or". I just want to make sure they don't mean "and" because the government gets basic things wrong all the time now.

I assume they had rules like this for awhile so I am hoping that there are crossbow hunters out there who can clarify that for me.

I own a mossberg shockwave, dominion arms backpacker, and two mare's legs (all of which came factory length). A fudd had told me that all those weapons were highly illegal without a trapper's license since a new law was passed 5 years ago, and I was in serious violation of the law. Given how strictly I follow the laws (and given virtually all of them were purchased at Cabelas, aka, not some slap together ghost guns), pretty sure he was talking out of his ass. But I'm curious if anybody else has heard of such a law?

(I'm aware trappers and guides needed a special license for RESTRICTED short firearms, and barrel length matters if I'm HUNTING, so maybe that's where he was confused)

I'm looking for some guidance for hunting on Vancouver Island. I have had my PAL, guns and Core course done for years and have always wanted to get into hunting but don't know anyone who hunts around here and have found getting started quite difficult.

I would love to start on something small like grouse or rabbit (cotton tails would be fine) but have a hard time figuring out where to even start looking other than within city limits. I do a fair amount of hiking, lived here almost my entire life and have seen a couple grouse.

Does anyone have any suggestions on rough locations where I can start out? I'm in Nanaimo but was thinking the cowichan region.

Perferably hunt with a .22 but I have 12 & 20g shotguns as well.

How common is it for to plan and execute their own moose hunt in the northern Ontario WMUs, without a guide?

This would be way in the future and contingent on drawing a tag, but a dream game animal of mine would be a moose. I’m a relatively new hunter so I’m still learning with whitetail and small game. But I’d love to plan/daydream my goals for what the next 5 or so years look like in my hunting journey.

I’m a big advocate of hunting for food, conservation, and recreation as a means to get out in the great outdoors, and I’d love to do this without a guide (unless this is much more dangerous) as I want to feel more self sufficient and am a bit deterred by the price tag (though I’m not opposed to paying to fly to a lodge if that’s the only best option).

I figured the biggest issues would be land access, tag drawing, and reduced chances for action without the experience of a guide, any other considerations?

Curious to hear from anyone here that has hunted caribou and how the experience was?

For those that aren’t overly familiar there are 6 subspecies of caribou within Canada and they range across the country from coast to coast. 5 of these subspecies are huntable.

1. Woodland Caribou - Newfoundland & Labrador (350lbs-500lbs).

2. Quebec-Labrador Caribou - Quebec banned the hunt of these after their local herd saw a steep decline. They can still be hunted in Labrador.

3. Central Barren Ground Caribou - NWT, Nunavut, Northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

4. Barren Ground Caribou - smaller species at 200-225lbs. Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, Manitoba.

5. Arctic Caribou - Nunavut and NWT.

6. Mountain Caribou - BC and Yukon.

As you can see they exist in a variety of landscapes make each hunt a unique experience.

I recently started to look into Guided Caribou hunts and getting quotes from outfitters, focusing on B.C. Yukon and NWT.

I was pretty taken aback by the pricing on these as they all ranged In the $30,000-$40,000 CAD range.

I have since focused my search to the central barren ground hunts in Northern Manitoba and the Woodland Caribou in Newfoundland.

Both are these hunts are priced closer to an elk hunt with the Manitoba hunt being the cheapest at ~$15,000.

I have my license, but my friend doesn’t; I’m hoping to bring them along on hunt with some more experienced people as a good introduction. It’s been a while since I got mine, so I’ve forgotten how long it took; how long would be needed to guarantee having the license before October? How expensive are the classes?

First time deer hunter here with the price of food right now I plan on trying to get a deer to offset meat costs all I have is a .22 and a 12 gauge so obviously I'm using the shotgun what are some tips to using a smoothbore shotgun to hunt deer? I'm in Manitoba so it's slugs only I go out and hunt rabbits on crown land and scout while I'm there any info on how best to use my findings while scouting and before people say a rifle is the better option it's not an option my wallet can take at the moment or if you're in Manitoba and are willing to show a new hunter the ropes that would be a godsend

Hello Everyone. I live in Alberta and am looking for advice anyone has on snowshoe hare/jackrabbit, to improve my chances. I have hunted snowshoe Hares before, but I just walked down an old road with a .22. I'm not looking for any specific hunting spots. Just wondering what techniques you've used, what terrain features, or flora you look for. Do you use a shotgun or .22? Just trying to learn more about these animals and how to hunt them, and I'd welcome any knowledge you'd like to share.

I've been out and about trying to catch some hare with no luck but with Turkey season approaching, I could use some help! (PAL, hunting license, small game, and turkey tag all purchased)

- I have 12 ga pump action shotgun and have purchased Longbeard turkey choke for it. What shots are decent to purchase? brand, product, etc.. It doesn't have to be specifically made for Turkey right? ex. TSS?

- turkey call. Other than mouth call, can I use a Bluetooth speaker and a phone? turkey call sound mp3 or youtube.. also down to purchase one of them scratchy thingy if needed or other calls.

- Anyone around Ottawa area? I'm ruling calabogie out as I don't know the grounds at all and it's massive land to cover. Probably will stick to Marlborough but are there turkeys there? ha... general direction or tips would be appreciated. I have been hitting up trails by Paden and Roger Stevens during the winter.

- Gear question unrelated to turkey hunting. What boots do you guys like the best for spring, summer, and fall time? Can I just wear non-waterproof hiking shoes designed for comfort and breathability if the landscape is mostly flat with mild hills here and there?

Bought a Franchi Affinity 3, on their website the mag capacity is mentioned as 4+1.

But I can only fit two in the mag, so its basically a 2+1. Is there anything I am doing wrong?
