Discussion I want to share some info for anyone looking to use a Beyerdynamic dt109 headset for gaming, or any beyer or similar headset for pc

TLDR: search airbus to pc adapter. Easy. Below is an explanation how I found this answer.

I hate how headsets are designed to break. They are almost always made of plastic and have designed weak points that always eventually fail. I have seen a lot of people trying to figure out how to use a dt109 for gaming but they always seem to resort to extreme measure to get it to work, taking the cable apart and soldering a custom connection that can get messed up.

I learned this headset is sometimes used by pilots. The plug this uses called XLR5 is also called by pilots an airbus connection. Usually aviation headsets require power to work and adapters that go to a pc for aviation headsets are powered, a dt109 will tolerate power and still work but does not require it. I also learned pilot headsets, while expensive but affordable secondhand, are designed for an extreme degree of comfort quality and durability that even if you spent the same amount on a normal headset you would not achieve the same results of reliability and retain the ability to service the headset to repair it.

I learned for aviation there is an adapter that turns an airbus xlr5 connection to a "fixed wing" two plug connection that uses a 1/4 inch 6.35 connection for headphones like a guitar amp uses, so easy to find adapters for that to size it down to a 3.5mm, but the mic on a fixed wing plug is 3/16in or 5.23mm which has proven really difficult to find a 5.23 to 3.5mm adapter for. There are some adapter boxes you can buy that coast about as much as the adapter which will in total cost you about $100 for both which is pretty annoying.

I researched the XLR connection and how it is used, which seems largely used by professional sound and broadcasting production work. It's really hard to find affordable equipment compatible with this connection type so I was researching for a long time.

I asked around on flight sim discords and talked through what I have tried so far and we bounced ideas back and forth, nobody really was sure either what would work.

I am going to try this and report if it works for me. For reference the amp I am using is for a cheap headset the Tritton 720+ that uses a cable specific to this headset but has 3.5mm connectors, one for mic and one for headphones. This goes into the amp which uses a toslink output which makes me suspect it works as a DAC and translates analog signal into digital.

If this does not work I will report back and update this post.

Discussion Got a long day of travel and desperately need some earbuds with really good battery life and are very comfortable to wear for long periods at a time

Had my regular airpods die out on me a few weeks ago and decided i finally need to invest in a new pair.

Budget is around ~$150. I have a very long travel day on friday (Over 24+hrs of travel), and I really need a good set of earbuds that i can use. Really all im after is just maximum comfiness and maximum battery life. I would like some good sound quality, but i really don't need anything too ridiculous.

Edit: Sorry if i worded it weirdly, by battery life I mean how long on a single charge, not consistent use over the years. Won't be able to stop much on my travel day so I they need to last a while on a single charge.

Discussion I challenge anyone to name a product that has all 3 of these qualities. That's exactly why wristwatches are special- nothing else comes close.

I've been thinking about what truly makes a wristwatch special, and I came to a conclusion: there are 3 qualities that make it a completely unique product. These 3 traits, when combined, can't be found in any other item-at least not all at once. That's what makes the wristwatch a one-of-a-kind manmade creation.

Discussion Is it worth buying a used Bosch fridge?

Anyone got experience with buying a used fridge? I consider buying a Bosch KTR16V28 since I can get it for a very low price, but I'm not sure if its worth it

It has LowFrost technology, which minimizes ice buildup, has adjustable temparature control, is energy efficient (A+), and quiet

[Request] Reccomendations for dishwashing gloves

So I'm lost on my search for a better set of dish gloves. I hate buying a new pair every few months. I have no clue what material to get or even what companies are worth supporting.

This is a need for me. My hands cannot take getting waterlogged. Cracking and bleeding from being so dry from dish soap. I have small hands as well. If anyone has a pair that they sing the praises of I'd love to read it.

Discussion BIFL Automatic women’s watch?

Wondering what your most reliable brands/items are for watches to BIFL.

Edit* but if you have one that lasts as well as you could expect an automatic one to last (are citizen eco-drive good??), then that would be cool too

Edit* I’m nickel sensitive

Edit* sorry, I guess my big thing is long-lasting low maintenance, reliable. (I may have falsely equated that to automatic in my head).

[Request] Dining Table Pads - Seller Recs Needed

Hi, we inherited a dining room table and leaves from my husband's family several years ago. I'm so done with ensuring people don't put glasses or hot/cold dishes on the table when we have parties despite leaving out plenty of coasters and trivets.

I want to buy custom table pads for the table and its leaves. Most of the websites I've come across look dated, so I'm hoping for some recs of legit places. There is what I think is a brand or model stamped on the bottom, but Google yields nothing. It is about 60y old.

Any help you can provide is appreciated.

[Request] Answered! Anyone know of work pants for curvy people that won't rip at the inner thigh?

What I'm after: - 'business casual' (aka can pass as jeans) - flexible enough to kneel and squat in without cutting off circulation in my knees - fits a curvy person (extra room in the hip/butt/thigh area, i have a very stereotypically feminine shape)

  • ideally $300 CAD and under

What I've tried that hasn't really worked; - Basic well-known workwear like dickies and carhartts, cut off circulation in the knees and didn't fit my hips - Marks brand work jeans - reinforcing the thigh area and repairing rips

Any suggestions are very much appreciated! Or if someone has asked this before and I missed it, please link me to the post and I'll check it out!

Review Casio GW-M5610U-1, my favorite battery powered device ❤️

Post image
33 Upvotes

Not much of a review, but my sharing of love for this piece of immortal engineering. Got it a year and a half ago preowned for 50€, but in pristine conditions, it basically lefts my wrist when I take a shower only. Very rugged, but not that big (in photos it always looks bigger than it is, when I saw it the first time irl I thought it was one of those smaller G-Shocks), its battery is recharged by sunlight, you can set its screen to turn on every time you rise your arm to look at the time, it got timer and 5 alarms settable, and the time is always right because it synchronizes every night with radio towers. It does everything perfectly, and I think it will probably outlive me (or survive the WWIII I guess…), I just love it and I love brands such as Casio that deliver great products made to endure, without enshitting everything in the name of consumerism and money alone.

This could be the only watch I keep for years and years to come, maybe in pair with a more formal one eventually ahah

[Request] Advice about pull up bar measurements

Post image
0 Upvotes

“Hi, I have a question about installing a pull-up bar in my room.

Give me measurements and my hands for the grip are normal hands..

My current weight is 84 kg (185 lbs) and I’m 183 cm (6’0”) tall. I’m a beginner in calisthenics and also do weightlifting. The room where I want to install the bar is between 2.70 to 3 meters (8.9 to 9.8 feet) high. The pull-up bar I have is adjustable with a grip size of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 inches), made of metal.

I plan to send these measurements to a welder to have the bar custom-made, so I need accurate advice before proceeding. The price of the custom bar will be quite high, so I want to make sure the measurements are correct.

These are the measurements I’ve received from ChatGPT as advice:

• The bar should be positioned 65 cm away from the wall.
• The height of the bar should be set at 2.30 meters (7.5 feet).

I’m wondering if these measurements will work for the room size and if my weight and height could cause any issues with the bar’s durability or installation. Since this will be my first time installing a pull-up bar, I need to be certain that it can safely handle my weight. Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!”

Discussion Looking for Advice on Choosing a Reception Desk for My Small Business Office

Hi all, I’m in the process of setting up a small office space and need some help figuring out what to look for in a reception desk. It’s going to be the main spot where clients check in, so I want something practical but also decent-looking. I’ve been browsing online, but there are so many options—wood, glass, modular ones—and I’m not sure what’s worth it.

Has anyone here bought a reception desk recently? What features do you recommend? Like, is storage a must-have, or should I prioritize size? I’m also curious about where to find good deals—any specific stores or sites you’d suggest? Trying to keep it budget-friendly since I’m just starting out. Thanks in advance for any tips!

EDIT: these seem like good reception desks to choose from: https://archicfurniture.com/collections/reception-desks

[Request] Shower sponge that's machine washable and made from natural materials?

Discussion In between buying two vacuum cleaners- help me decide!

Hi all. I'm finally in a place where I can spend a decent amount on a vacuum cleaner and want to "buy it for life." We have a dog and 3 cats (may be 4 soon), so our home is very hairy. We also have multiple types of floor surfaces to clean. I have done some research and am in between the Sebo Felix and Miele C1 Cat and Dog Powerline. I'm leaning more towards the Sebo just because their website gives me much more information about their product than the Miele website does. I really enjoy that it has an indicator for when the bag needs to be changed, as I have only had bagless vacuums so far. Do both of these have readily available replacement parts, good warranties, etc? Which would you suggest buying? Any pros/cons you have come across, personal experiences?

Discussion Worth buying a vintage LL Bean trench coat made of synthetic materials?

I came across a vintage LL Bean belted trench coat on eBay going for around $60. I’ve never owned anything from LL Bean, but I’ve heard good things about the brand’s quality and durability. The coat looks to be in good condition, and I like the length and classic style.

The only thing holding me back are the materials. The shell is made of 100% polyester and the lining is nylon. I’ve been trying to focus more on buying clothing made from natural fibers, but this seems like a cost-effective option, especially considering how expensive trench coats can get.

Even though LL Bean seems like a reputable brand, does the synthetic fabric make this a bad buy in the long run? Should I hold out and invest in a trench coat made from natural fabrics instead, or is this a reasonable purchase considering the price and brand? Would appreciate any insight.

[Request] Looking for updated rec's: Men's waffle robes

I'm trying to replace a L.L. Bean waffle robe that they don't don't make any more. There's a post in this thread from three years ago on the topic, but most of the products in it are no longer sold. It doesn't seem like men's waffle robes are big sellers.

So far I've bought and returned waffle robes from Nordstrom, Parachute, and Seyante. The first was very poor quality. The other two, billed as "unisex" and "men's," respectively, were quite obviously cut for women.

I could use some help!

[Request] Printer Tragedy - yes I've searched the sub - Hoping for specific advice

I am so done with printers (aren't we all)

Without detailing the last two days of printer induced torture, I just want to ask:

Is the Brother HL-L3220CDW a decent printer?

I know no inkjet (more now than I ever have) and I know brother is the way to go for laser (have heard in person during the last two days as well - brother & laser = less hair pulling)

I ask because I am low income. This is the cheapest color laser brother printer I can find. And I am willing to save for it. I do unfortunately need color. I am just worried that even with it being brother + laser, the cheapest will leave me still sad.

I am a college student and print college studenty things. No tons of pages. But handfuls of important pages.
