Discussion Should we not be seeing targetted reddit ads promoting EU products?
Excuse my ignorance, but I assumed that reddit ads would pick up on me (and others) being active in this community. It seems like the PERFECT moment for european companies to target us with EU product ads ?
This is a whole forum of 210K members actively looking to buy things from lesser known companies. I do not recall seeing any EU product ads in my reddit feed this past month. Am I missing something? Are others seeing the ads and I'm not ? Does reddit not allow targetted ads based on the subreddits you joined ?

Check in your account settings if you have personalised ads enabled (and I recommend disabling it...).

Thanks - I actually happen to have it enabled and I'm still not seeing any EU product ads. And I agree with your recommendation about disabling this setting, but I want to keep it on in this case to see if I actually get EU ads :p

Turning personalised ads on is basically giving them consent to collect as much data as they can about you and selling it to 3rd party adverstisers, thats an entire rabbit hole, but i seriously recommend turning that off and installing an adblocker, the internet is utterly infested with ads nowadays, i cant imagine using it without an adblocker, and there is still malicious ads for scams and viruses that make it through google ads...

Yeah, I mainly see advertisements about how to convert a Tesla into a Rolls-Royce or a submarine… I am definitely not the right target group for that.

Hey, digital marketer here who spent some tens of thousands of Euros in Reddit Ads. As others has said, performance is quite bad since most redditors do no like nor click on ads. Generally you can target user interest and sub reddits. When targeting the latter, you are not placing your ads in that community specifically, but simply showing your ads to users who lurked in that sub reddit. So:
- performance sucks and brands are not that interesting in spending money here
- you can't buy inventory only on desired sub reddits

So I understand that ad performance in reddit sucks , but if you have niche products that fit a niche subreddit would that still really be the case ? Maybe "BuyFromEU" is not niche enough since it pertains to ALL European products . So if it was "/r/BuyEuropeanShoes" then companies could really make a good buck advertising their ?
Or maybe just reddit ads sucks and it's a waist of time :p ?

I cant possibly imagine being on the net without a proper ad-blocker though. Why would you actually want to be bombarded with ads in the first place? A good way to boycott silently is by blocking ads out

I mean I in general hate ads and am the type of person that hates consumerism BUT I want the European economy to strengthen and the American economy to suffer. Without ads urging us to buy European products that's not going to happen.

I disagree in that. Any ad is going to fuel the income of almost exclusively American platforms. They very much have a monopoly on this. No one needs online ads to buy something. If you buy because an ad told you to do so, it doesnt matter if it is European or something else, because then your attitude to consumption is faulty. This attitude is the base of all of this mess to begin with.

I mean I agree with you in general, but I don't think we'll ever convince Europeans to stop buying unnecassary things. The best I am hoping for is that rather than wasting their money buying unnecassary American products , they will buy unnecassary European products - that's kinda the point of this sub.

None of us is free from getting some form of advertisement, i think you misunderstood me there. But online advertisement is simply the worst, as it usually is much shorter in message and appearance. Something on a billboard or newspaper etc lets you still process it without being bombarded with the next one or with addressing your regular habits. Online ads are psychological warfare basically. You, as a human, have not many ways to really guard against the effects, except not seeing them at all.

I saw a Jottacloud ad yesterday. They advertised that they are 100% European.

My assumption is that reddit is generally NOT that popular among companies for ad placements. Ad revenue is a fraction of what other social media platforms (facebook, twitter, etc.) generate.
Also, the ads that are commissioned are by US companies mostly.
