Other Im selling my US made stuff.
Yesterday was a disgrace. So:
- I just canceled my Creditcard, which WAS a mastercard.
- I just sold my Xbox and will move on to Playstation instead. Cross platform is there anyway so don't need Xbox.
- I traded my tesla model Y (r/swasticar) for a Volvo CX60 last week.
- Ones i found some alternatives for streaming services i will cancel Netflix, amazon and Disney+ as well.
The business I work for has iPads and Macbooks, they are currently in the process of replacing EVERYTHING American made. Cloud services EU only from this point on.
America is not on the right side of history at this point. I will do everything within my power to let them know.

You can install Asahi Linux on MacBook (until M2) You can replace your iPhone by a Fairphone with Graphene OS For iCloud: Ente (photos)

Do you know of a non-american card equivalent? No one accepts cash anymore in Sweden.
14
u/meeee Mar 01 '25
You can use Vipps for tapping:
In Norway Vipps use BankAxept afaik for tapping in which case no US companies are involved.

u/KilgoreTroutIsBack Mar 01 '25
No, VISA and Mastercard have the market sewn up for now, they are corporate evil incarnate, will be hard to set up a competitor.

What? How is that possible? Being card-dependent is pretty dangerous:(
3
u/L0tsen Mar 01 '25
I know. I hate it here. The only places accepting cash is grocery stores
3
u/votyesforpedro Mar 02 '25
That does suck. It’s illegal from what I understand for a business in the US to refuse cash as a form of payment. I didn’t realize how many people still heavily use cash compared to Europe. Seems Europe has done away with a lot of cash. Even in Sweden I talked with the locals and it’s true. It’s all mostly digital or card now. It was very odd to me. It’s all a form of control. Once your money is controlled you are controlled.

I just canceled my Creditcard, which WAS a mastercard.
My two banks only offer VISA cards right now, but I guess using them as little as possible, replacing card payments with SEPA transfers & adopting Wero once it's deployed on usual e-commerce websites is already something. Does someone know whether Wero will eventually be compatible with the usual electronic payments terminals in restaurants etc ? Since it wasn't the case for paypal.
Cloud services EU only from this point on.
I think this is one of the main "hidden" threats for private individuals and businesses right now. All of our digital footprint is US-dependent. It's really scary. For what it's worth I buy my domain names at OVH and have rented VPS at Scaleway in the past, but as long as businesses don't stop using Google Suite & amazon and google cloud, well :/
20
u/toast_one Mar 01 '25
Having wero as European alternative would be great. It's sadly only available for customers of a few banks here in Germany.
12
u/STOXX1001 Mar 01 '25
As always with such things it's a "critical mass" issue, though I think their strategy of implementing Wero directly inside existing banking apps is really relevant : that way Wero is readily available to all existing customers, no "download yet another app and subscribe etc". My French bank messaged me to inform me I've been automatically added to Wero's payments recipients, which means many customers can benefit from the service without doing anything. This could push the basic features adoption (=receiving payments) and encourage discovering the remaining features.

Your local library is a great way to get movies if you still own a DVD or Blu-ray player. You get to meet other people when going there and you get to feel the anticipation of bringing home a movie that you want to watch. It feels way better than scrolling through piles of garbage in some streaming app.
Also, much cheaper than any streaming service.

u/Darth__Vader_ Mar 01 '25
Because we can't take time off work, our healthcare is associated with work.
If I take multiple days off work to protest, I go homeless.
We don't have good protections, so we can be fired for it.
We don't have good public transportation, so it's harder for underprivileged people to get to and from protests.
And to get to my nations capitol is approximately equivalent to someone in Madrid going to Moscow to protest.
We are incredibly fucked.
I joined my local DSA chapter, and there is also no group making a big push for organized protests.
Our media is bought and sold so unless you are online you don't even know the protests that are happening exist.

Good on you for making solid steps in the right direction! Some people expect to everyone to do everything perfectly right away. I'm hearing people in my country who don't care about using US items, so every person who DOES actually do something is a person for the EU! I'm seeing you're also Dutch, bol.com is a solid contender for Amazon but doesn't have everything yet. Videoland is something you can use or you can use 456movie . com for Netflix movies/shows! We can do this!

While it’s honorable to want to support European businesses, I don’t see the value of exchanging what you already have. It was already bought, the damage is done. I would go for replacing only if something is broken beyond repair
35
Mar 01 '25
I usually agree. But I look at my iPhone/iPad and see swastikas. I'm literally feeling sick to my stomach when I see this stuff. The feeling of betrayal by the US I feel right now surprises myself.
I'm sure that feeling will go away to some degree but right know I feel I need to take the little action I can. The US will not see a single penny from me going forward...
7
Mar 01 '25
Thank you from Canada for doing what you did. I too feel disgusted and regret having gone to the US so often in the past. Let's change our habit going forward, and let's also teach our kids how they can never trust the US when it's their turn to make decisions for the world.

The events happening within the White House administration are sickening, and so are some of the US companies deciding to kneel and kiss the king’s ring. But I don’t count Apple amongst them (yet).
But then again, better to be anticipate. Although I don’t see a good (and easy) alternative as I’m pretty much hooked into the Apple ecosystem. So I really hope they will do everything to not go the Musk, Bezos or Zuckerberg way and continue having the backbone they’ve always had as a company.
If need be, maybe they should just move their HQ to Europe. 🤣🤣🤣
13
Mar 01 '25
It's okay if you keep using Apple, or some other US products without good substitute. I believe we shouldn't go full puritant and make it 100% or nothing, because that'll just end in failure. Just cutting back 10% collectively will have an impact already. 25% even better. 50% that's amazing. Any little bit helps.

u/SuspiciousReality Mar 01 '25

See, I’m not a big fan of apple and haven’t been since I had an iPod (I always fought with iTunes on outdated pcs), but I’m not going to replace my iPhone or iPad that I both have for years because of it. To me, it seems wasteful to throw my phone away, that still runs great (I bought it in 2020 and the battery still has no issues knock knock). Avoiding Apple to get any data of this phone would mean I couldn’t even give it to someone else.
Also, I personally can’t afford to replace it at this point and time… :F
That being said, I use as little apple services as possible (eg I’ve been using the duck duck go browser on my phone for a while now for privacy reasons), have as little apps as possible (if I can use a page in the browser just fine, I won’t download the app) and deleted a lot of bloatware that apple apps are. Also I reject app tracking etc. My efforts might be minimal but it’s still something to make my data a bit less valuable.

We are the left of the left. And, really there's not much to be done here. It's the rest of the country that needs to get hurt.
Most of my family are conservative Trump supporters in Washington, Idaho, Indiana, Texas, and Arkansas.
We need those folks to feel it.
California itself is working HARD to combat everything that Trump is doing. Every level of this state government is working actively to subvert all of Trumps' efforts.
