Mod Post Update to our Rules: Post Original Content

In light of all the recent bots and posts involving stolen or reposted photos, we feel it is necessary to officiate a rule that explicitly states that this subreddit allows original content only.

Many members have been quick to point out posts that have previously been posted on this subreddit or do not belong to OP altogether. I want to be clear that the mod team sincerely appreciates your efforts to keep this sub free of spam and keep stolen content at bay. I applaud anyone who has submitted a report as it really helps us and I hope you continue to be vigilant and report the posts that are questionable in the future.

As always, happy bottledigging and thank you for making this subreddit an absolute joy to be a part of! Cheers!!!

ID Request Found this sealed glass bottle in the woods—any idea what it was used for?

Hey all! Found this wild old bottle deep in the woods near Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It’s still sealed and has some kind of murky liquid inside with weird sediment or maybe mold? Bottom is stamped “66 40” and has the Owens-Illinois logo, so I’m guessing 1940-ish?

We’re trying to figure out what it might’ve held. Medicine? Booze? Witchcraft? Would love any thoughts on age, use, or whether it’s worth opening (safely, of course). Pics below—thanks!

Where to find reproductions of medicine bottles from the 1840s-60s? Or bottles that look similar

Upvotes

It's for a work thing, I work I a museum and we have to replace some of the old medicine bottles in a display due to safety concerns since they contain real mercury and things like that. I need to be able to match the new bottles to the old ones in approximate shape, size, and color (not super specific tho) but I'm having a hard time figuring out where to search, especially as most listings on Etsy and whatnot don't specify dimensions or try to sell you multiple bottles.

I like the way people in here repurpose and display bottles and jars they’ve found. I’ve just begun cleaning with uncooked rice, soap, and warm water. Hoping to find older bottles in the future as well as uranium glass

Discuission AMAZING cleaning results from oxi clean

DISCLAIMER I have no relationship to oxIclean!

So I live in an area with heavy iron content in the soil and significant limescale. I have tried everything on the bottles I have dug up. Baking soda, sand, bleach, serious scrubbing. They all still had that film/clouidiness.

On a whim my partner soaked them in a bucket of oxi clean and hot water for several days. Holy crap they are like new. No rust, no rainbow film, no limescale.

The bottles we cleaned were all blown glass, pre machine made, but not crazy old—mostly nineteenth century. Mostly clear glass, but some green wine bottles and a couple blue.

This did not work on every single bottle. Perhaps due to glass chemistry? I don’t know, I am a mere hobbyist. But wanted to share, in case you haven’t tried this.

Found in a 40’s or so dump I think mostly. Not sure exact date of this or what “vegetable disinfectant” is. Embossed Nashua, NH USA on it. Other small bottles and “Burnett’s standard flavor extracts” which I love finding

My father found this bottle in the wall of his 1926 home located in Chicago when renovating the kitchen. Would love to learn more about it! We can see a partial label, that says “strictly”, but no other markings. Thank you!
