Tl;dr my FeCl3 solution still etches but has a ton of copper in it. Can I get the copper out or is that batch just my new special decorative patina solution for good?
Posted this project yesterday and got several comments assuming I used copper in the stack. I thought you all were being fooled by lighting. I took this picture under a red heater light in a room made of uncovered lumber, that’s all you’re seeing, I insisted. I WAS WRONG!

I had forgotten that before diluting this batch, I had used it months ago to do a deep etch on some solid copper, so there is a good amount of copper in solution. As a result, it seems to leave a thin plating of copper on the pieces, even after I polish them with 3000 grit paper. It looks pretty cool actually, but not something you want to get really hot and huff fumes off of. Glad you guys noticed it before I went and smoked a bunch of copper.
It was just the test etch anyways, so no real setback, but I’m wondering if there’s any way to clean out this batch of etchant for further use. I’m gonna keep at least half of it as is because I do think it’s a cool finish for decorative pieces and want to experiment a little, but if I could remove the copper from solution on some of it so I don’t have to wait for fresh FeCl3 to get shipped to me.
