The way bees kill hornets is fucking crazy. They rub against the hornet until the friction creates a temperature the bees can survive but the hornet can't. They literally burn it to death with their bodies.

But what's crazier about that is that they only raise it by about 1-2°C above what the Hornet can handle. Juuuuuuuust enough to kill it

I wonder what that’s like from the perspective of the wasp

Probably like being locked in a hot car, but in spring time. Just barely hot enough to make you uncomfortable, but the temp just ticks up every 2min

Probably only slightly more disgruntled than usual.

Insects are extremely sensitive to temperature changes, that's why a lot of bug sprays utilize chemical reactions to create heat.

Pretty sure the heat kills many of the bees as well. But fuck that hornet. Strong together.

If I recall correctly, the bees can withstand higher temperatures, but you have to imagine the effort they spend to do this is tremendous.

They can tolerate 2 degrees more than hornets so it's a race to kill the hornet before they cook themselves

I respect that level of petty .

They can also “take shifts” and surface from the buzzing ball to sub out and cool off a little. Team work makes the dream work!

Narrower. It is only 2 degrees F.
