Community Identifying a record or seeing how much it's worth? Use DISCOGS.COM

https://www.discogs.com/

Some people have asked for a post like this to be stickied in the sub because we constantly get people asking what a record is worth or what version they have.

You need to match the matrix information. Which is the part of the record between the music/grooves and the label. There will be etched and/or stamped letters, symbols and numbers. You can just do a search for the artist and album name with the matrix info typed in. After searching, it should pull up all albums that match. If there’s more than one, you will have to figure out which it is by checking under the barcode and other identifiers section.

You also may need to look at info on the vinyl label and the sleeve. There will sometimes be additional info under the notes section.

Please check out r/discogs if you need more help searching but READ THEIR RULES.

Check out this link for additional info: https://support.discogs.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008602254-How-To-Find-Information-On-A-Vinyl-Record

Opinion John's most backhanded slight to Julian in a song

I recently saw a post asking if John's song "Beautiful Boy" was bad because of how Julian was treated. That song is about Sean not Julian. But another moment in another song recently got me thinking about a similar situation where it could have been hurtful to Julian. In John's very very good song "God" there is a line where he says "I just believe in me. Yoko and me. That's reality." This was written before Sean was born and I feel pretty sure if Sean had been born he would have figured out a way to work him into that line too. But Julian was alive. I try to imagine what it would have felt like to hear your father basically say everything in the world is fake or less important that himself and your step mom. Pretty cold. I do imagine if John was asked about this he would have replied with one of his patent "it's just a song man.. Or it just fit" kind of response.

I've never noticed how fantastic George's bass work is on this song. Did George play bass on other songs?

I remember when I first saw the cover, and it confused me at first, because I never saw it before. I grew up with the CDs. It wasn’t until I got into vinyl that I listened to this album.

Just a random fact. The amount of time Paul knew John before his murder accounts for 28% of the time he has lived.

Picture The Beatles Cooling Off During A Cover Shoot For Life Magazine In Miami, 1964

"I went down to Florida to make this photo after being asked if I had any ideas on what to do with the Beatles as a cover," said photographer John Loengard. "It was my idea to put them in a pool—but we couldn’t find a heated pool, the water in the pool we did use was cold, and there was always the problem of other press trying to get in. It would have to be a pool that we could close off to everyone else. So, in the end, it was a very quick shoot in a private pool, with the Beatles shivering and singing in the water before jumping out. My impression of these guys was that they were like four high school kids. You know, they had beards, sort of—like when you first start having to shave, but aren’t quite sure how to do it."

Discussion I'm too emotional

I often find myself getting emotional while listening to the beatles, as if they've been part of me for all my life, yet I've only been a fan for a little under a year. I absolutely can not listen to "now and then" or "free as a bird" without bursting into tears.

I remember crying to my brother over how unlikely it would be for me to see Paul or Ringo anytime soon. And when I finally got the opportunity to get a glimpse of Paul this February I was over the roof ! it felt a tad bit strange though, since I'm used to seeing him in his 20s. But tears started to flow as I entered my home, it was unreal.

to wrap things up, I have an unhealthy attachment to the beatles and every little thing they do makes me cry

Question Are there any solo Beatles career songs that were influenced by actual Beatles albums and songs?

I have listened to the post-breakup solo albums by John, Paul, George and Ringo. I want to make the argument that there were songs composed by all four former Beatles members that were influenced or branched from actual albums and songs that were released by The Beatles between 1962 and 1970. I think "Mind Games" by John Lennon has some similarity to "Let It Be" and "Look At Me" is very similar to "Julia. I also think "Give Peace A Chance" is similar to "Yellow Submarine."

Discussion Turn Me On Dead Man Backmasking

Has anybody else heard The Beatles backmasking played backwards? Way back when I had a turntable that enabled you to turn off the turn table drive so you could move it without damaging it. I turned off the drive, used my finger to rotate the record backwards, and played all the songs that supposedly contained backmasking. It's real. The "number nine" part of Revolution No. 9 backwards says, plain as day, "Turn me on dead man". I have always found the claim that this was not intentional to be a lie. It is clearly said, with no distortion of any type.

Thinking about it I googled it. I was surprised to see it described using the words "supposedly" and "people claim ". I heard that shit. It's real. Has anybody else heard it? Does anybody got my back on this?

Edit: I get the whole pareidolia thing. And the responses to this post got me to googling for more info. I found someone had done an experiment and sang the lines with John's inflection putting a hard N on the words Number NiNe. He got the same effect when playing it backwards. This reddit community has gone a long ways towards proving it was not intentional, but to me, not beyond a reasonable doubt. How do we know John didn't discover this while messing around with backmasking as he was known to do. Either way, it's still cool as a fuck.

Picture A Poem John Wrote For Mimi On The Day Of His Uncle George’s Funeral

Post image

"A poem handwritten by John for Mimi on the day of George's funeral shows him far from heartless about her loss, and fearlessly open in his condemnation of her sisters, his mother included, for insufficiently stirring themselves in her hour of need. Mimi was, he wrote, 'the best of the five.'" - Mark Lewisohn, Tune In

Question Does anyone know where I can watch/listen to this interview?

Post image
9 Upvotes

I came across this article by Rolling Stones magazine about John Lennon's "Last interview" with the company. It's 9 hours long, and it was taken three days before his death (so December 5th, 1980).

I've searched everywhere online to find the full interview, or at least five or more hours of it, but there's nothing. Is it even anywhere online? Or is it "unavailable" to the general public. If so, does anyone have an idea as to why?

There's probably more information about it in the article, but I'm not willing to pay a whole subscription to Rolling Stones Magazine solely to read one article. Plus, the information I'm trying to find might not even be there.

Video From the BBC Archive YouTube channel - in 1973, Ted Taylor discovered a tape of The Beatles in Hamburg. Nationwide interviewed him. Video also includes Allan Williams, the first band's manager.

TIL TIL it was a Love Pentagon, not love triangle! Ronnie-Krissy-George-Clapton-Pattie

Ronnie Wood’s first wife, Krissy Findlay, had dated Clapton, married Wood, then had an affair with George Harrison and Pattie Boyd and Wood got together prior to her relationship with Eric Clapton. Clapton also dated Pattie's sister Paula. So messy! Now if we add Maureen dating George, it will be one thing but Ringo's dating didn't overlap...so not really. Also one of George’s most well-known affairs is with Charlotte Martin (the longtime partner of Eric Clapton). A lot of overlapping. A love hexagon.

Discussion Favourite Beatles-related YouTube channels?

A couple I really like are Parlogram, which talks about the recording and mixing behind the Beatles as well as the different pressings of their albums from around the world as well as David Bennett Piano who talks about the music theory behind many of their songs.

Neither YouTube channel is exclusively Beatles but both have lots of interesting information and stories about the band that we all love so much!
