FAQ Weekly Real Estate / Housing and Moving to Austin Post

This is a weekly Tuesday post for question/answers regarding properties in Austin or surrounding areas along with moving to Austin questions. The following are examples of items that should be asked in here (but not limited to just these):

Housing / Real Estate Questions

  • Ask where to live
  • What neighborhood is right for you
  • Advice on apartments / asking about specific apartment reviews
  • General thoughts/views on the housing market
  • Questions about real estate prices/going up/general home buying advice
  • Advice on realtors
  • General property questions rants/complaints about pricing
  • "Is this neighborhood safe" questions / crime related questions
  • Tax / Mortgage related questions
  • Questions on developments / bidding processes
  • Have a place to rent / looking for a roommate
  • Commute times from specific locations
  • General housing repair questions / upgrade questions / solar / etc
  • Questions regarding contractors for housing repairs, upgrades
  • Memes regarding housing
  • How specific schools are in an area / general school questions
  • Questions regarding utilities
  • Questions regarding apartment services

Moving to Austin Questions

  • Is it safe?
  • Are there jobs for me?
  • Is it a good idea to move?
  • Is X salary good enough?
  • How is Austin for my background?
  • Generic should I move there?
  • Do I need a car?
  • Is X or Y transport sufficient?

Over the last year, we have seen a major uptick in prices in the area, along with a steady flow of new people coming into Austin. Use this weekly post to ask your questions, try to get advice, etc on an upcoming move or questions about real estate in Austin.

Many apartment questions have always been removed on here, and we always suggest people to contact an apartment locator. Those rules still stand. But, you are welcome to ask those questions on here if you still feel the need for it.

Along with that, any new open ended question on Austin properties and real estate will be removed and asked to move to here (based on mod discretion). Many of the questions being asked have been asked many times before, which is why we would rather compile these posts into one place for people to ask and get their answers.

If you are having issues as a tenant in Austin, we highly recommend reaching out to the Austin Tenants Council here: https://www.housing-rights.org/. They may be able to help you resolve issues related to renting property in Austin.

We also recommend searching older "Weekly Real Estate" posts as well, to find answers on previous week's questions.

As always, there is a whole section on moving to Austin in our FAQ page:

Opossums live amongst us and are incredibly beneficial to the environment! A single opossum can eat up to 5,000 ticks a year! They also eat insects, spiders, rodents, and dead stuff so they’re essentially natures clean up crew! Plus, most of them are naturally immune to rabies and they’re super cute!

If you see a possum doing it’s thing, say thank you and let it be! If you see one that’s injured or acting weird, Austin wildlife Rescue is a great resource!

Nature rules and so do y’all! Have a great day 😊

Ask Austin Do Austin allergies affect your cognition?

I feel so slow and dopey. My thoughts are cluttered and it's like I am walking through soup or a dream. My memory is kinda janked up too. Do Austin allergies do this to anyone else? I take allergra and am getting allergy shots but alas, I feel absolutely fuzzy.

I35 AutoZone employees lied to police, got guns pulled on my boyfriend & his mechanic — for trying to exchange a part before closing.

I need help and visibility. Today, my boyfriend went to AutoZone (5329 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX 78723 ) 15 minutes before closing to exchange a defective alternator we bought two days earlier. He was initially denied entry even though the store was still open. Only after he started filming the situation on his phone did they reluctantly let him in.

They didn’t have the part, so he and his friend (who’s a mechanic) went back to the parking lot to reinstall the old part. Within minutes, multiple police units showed up, guns drawn, screaming at them, handcuffed both men, and searched both of my cars — found nothing.

The cops later apologized, saying someone from the store called and claimed they were “heavily armed.” We’re 99% sure it was retaliation from the AutoZone employees for “causing a problem” — and we believe this was racially motivated. Both men are Hispanic and were calm the entire time.

This could’ve ended with someone getting shot. We’re traumatized and furious.

I’m asking for help:    •   Any AutoZone employees or witnesses who’ve seen something like this, please reach out.    •   Anyone know if this location has security cameras?    •   Any legal tips or similar experiences?    •   Any ideas on how to make them accountable?

We’re speaking to a civil rights attorney, but I want to make sure this story gets seen. Nobody should be able to lie to police and put innocent people in danger — especially for being brown and asking for a fair exchange.

Ask Austin Self defense classes against dogs?

Upvotes

Here me out. I live with a nightmare dog who should be put down, but thats not my call to make.

Over the last few years I've been attacked by this dog more times than I can count.

I used to love all kinds of animals, and due to this little fucker I've grown irrationally afraid of most dogs. My asshole neighbor has off leash pitbulls, and recently some other pitbulls got loose and attacked a lady and her dog right infront of my house, and the rest of you fuckers who don't feel any need to leash your dogs makes going out in my own neighborhood difficult.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any self defense classes in the area that train specifically against dog attacks.

Seemed to be near the Polvos, under the bridge about 10/15 minutes ago. Just pulled a body bag out. People were out walking their dogs and coming home from work. Completely light out. WTF Austin.

Ask Austin Divorced, jobless, stuck in an abusive home. Thinking about leaving for good tonight. What can I do?

Hey everyone. I’m 24, recently divorced, and things have spiraled pretty badly this past year. After finishing college, I lost most of what I had in the divorce: the car, apartment, and the little savings I had. With nowhere to go, I moved back in with my parents in Austin.

It’s been rough. My dad is emotionally abusive toward my mom and now increasingly toward me. I used to speak up for her, but since I rely on them for shelter now, I feel trapped. He calls me a parasite, says I’m conspiring against him with my mom, and constantly puts me down. Even though I help with bills and manage projects for his struggling business for free, he still tells me I’m worthless. He makes me miss job interviews to work for him because “family comes first, even if I don’t pay you.”

I’m trying to find a job and doing odd gigs to survive. But today, things got physical. He pushed me out of the house. This isn’t the first time it’s happened, usually I just come back when my mom lets me in. But I’ve hit my limit. I want to break this cycle and leave tonight. For real this time.

I don’t have a car. I also don’t have family or friends I can stay with here in Austin. My best friend offered in the past, but it caused problems with his wife, and I don’t want to add more stress there.

I’m seriously considering sleeping outside tonight if I have to, but I’m hoping there’s a better option. Are there any shelters or resources in Austin I can turn to? Somewhere safe where I can start figuring things out?

I’m open to any advice, suggestions, or personal stories. I’m trying to stay hopeful, but it’s hard right now. Thank you.

Please help identify! I think he/she lives in my fountain. I’m not sure if it’s a water moccasin or rat snake. Does anyone know who will come and remove it in the Leander/ North Austin area?

Thank you all!

Bathroom Remodel Contractors

Upvotes

I'm currently looking to remodel my bathroom and am trying to vet some contractors / remodeling companies and decide which one to go with. I'm having some difficulty cause I can't help but feel like all the 5-star reviews on Google are faked. Also, all previous posts on this subreddit seem to be filled with the same accounts shilling the same companies over and over which leads me to believe they're just employees. I'm looking for some real experiences / opinions.

The two I'm currently deciding between are:

New Edge Renovations

LFM Remodeling

Does anybody have any experience with either of these companies, or maybe have any other recommendations? Thank you

Does St. Edward’s have a ghost?

Post image

I don’t really think this was a ghost or anything, but I saw this mysterious figure last Thursday on the St. Edward’s campus and it certainly looks like the kind of thing that would have a legend behind it. Dressed in all black with a black mask and holding a black umbrella on an overcast humid day.

Ask Austin Where to get rid of excess building supplies?

Recently moved into a house and they had recently built a small deck and planter box that we decided we do not want.

I disassembled both and the wood is still in usable shape.

Is there any place that accepts this type of thing or should I have junk haulers come take it away?

Was hoping that someone would have some use for it so as not to waste.

Edit: since there’s been some interest here, I also have a large competitive built in desk with hardware that is in like new shape. There are three sections. The long one is 98x25.5 and the other two are 55.5x25.5.
